Katy Perry Photo Shoot

She looks abit daft there, like shes going to poke herself in the eye. She sure isn't brandishing it like a weapon. She looks somewhat confused by it, if such a thing is possible.

Pearl jam once had a picture on a concert t-shirt of a child reaching for a handgun with the saying "9 out of 10 kids prefer crayons to hand guns"
They came out pretty strongly against guns but have that kind of weapon all over the place to raise their message. That could be the case here, give her the benefit of the doubt and let her assign 1,000 words to that picture. If she disappoints you thats just par for the course.

Maybe it's an honest mistake. I'll bet she has a busy life and I'm sure she's entitled to a screw up now and again. If we are completely honest with ourselves under a fish eye lense all of our crap stinks and we all make mistakes. I'm more curious to see how this is delt with than the occurence itself.

I let celebs form their ideas and me form mine, and I sure as heck try to form my children's above and beyond their influence. My kids can talk to me and as much as I could and can sometimes relate to Mr. Vedder, my family was bigger as far as role models go for me because of that feedback. They did it correctly, by estimates at least. This has helped make me an individual and I hiope to do the same for my kids.

My son knows, for instance, I love Pearl Jam but am not vehemently anti gun. I enjoy hunting and love nature just like Vedder, but in a different way. he saves the oceans I save deer from starving getting overpopulated etc. etc. Art and artists are to be appreciated, not indoctrinated.

I realize that this isn't the case for most folks, especially those of the formable age of adolescence, but for those that are so easily influenced....they'd just find another person with a knife to identify with, dare I say it...oh hell why not...maybe even a person with a scythe like our Buffy.

You can't police the whole world, you can only hope to influence your corner of it.

hi Scobro. Thanks for the karma. To answer your question: It was probably right at the time of Jeremy very early 90's

Was the Pearl Jam pre-or post Jeremy video? I remember the backlash over that.. dont remember the crayon thing
I am all for it, actually. I think it is wonderful. You have to realize that many people dont read nor watch the news, and some of those that do are simply indifferent. By her (and I have no clue who she is) posing with the knife, people will latch on to that image - such as Bluebird did- and bring the topic to the foreground. Celebrity is always (nowadays at least) more newsworthy than actual news. Regardless of her motives, this will being the topic up for discussion much more often than a newspaper or TV report.

What an absolutely ludicrous comment to make.

I didn't read the rest of the thread after the BB post below so my apologies to either Lyri or Faith who probably said something like what I will say BUT how many 12 year olds engulfed in this lifestyle that follow these 'artists' will be involved in these discussions of debates.
These kids that are as young as 8 don't sit in their classrooms discussing the merit of popular artists brandishing flick knives in a society that puts alot of stock in celebrity role models (I will discuss this part with my response to BB) no, they are impressionable and think that if she looks cool and is who she is because of how she is, they will follow it.
To spark debate and conversation on something like this will NOT stop these youngsters getting knives and stabbing each other. These kids are there because of a multitude of issues within society, their culture and their families that need to be addressed and while this WILL come from debate amongst adults, in the mean time Kate 'The C**t' Perry is promoting something VERY negative and even sinister JUST to maintain a level of celebrity and notoriety that her first single has afforded her.
Whatever her reasons she is a deplorable person for using the plight of many young people, not ust those who have died but those who a) had their lives ruined by knife crime/culture b) those who feel they NEED to wander the streets 'tooled' up to be safe.
She should be stripped of her contract and her 'celeb' status for this insulting picture.

And I think we put too much on celebrities as "role models"; for the most part, they just want to make cool movies/music and never asked to be anyone's role model, and it's not really right of us to expect a certain kind of behavior out of them because of our expectations.

Well yes and no.

I think people SHOULD look for other role models, however kids do look up to these guys. No one is asking them to be 'perfect' but there should be some recognition that as long as they are 'famous' people will try to emulate them and follow them.

Along with losing a certain level of privacy they should accept that they have an obligation to those who look up to them.
There is a price to fame, if you don't want to pay it, don't go for it.

How many 12 YEAR OLDS make, or enforce law?
How many 12 year olds allow bills to be passed allowing these weapons to be purchased as easily as they are?

More to the point tell me how many times were 12 YEAR OLDS mentioned before you posted? Could that be none?

So where did they magically come from, these 12 year olds which I was "talking" about?

Or were you talking about 'adults' with the mentality of 12 year olds? Maybe that was it? I do know a few of those.

I'm going to stab Katy Perry.. "I stabbed a girl, and I liked it.."

As the whole Knife Crime problem in the UK is why this is SUCH a big issue the '12' age is perfectly reasonable as THESE are the people a) that are affected b) who this singer is hoping buys her albums.

Nothing in your last comment has anything to do with the issue, you've simply tried to attack a post when quite obviously you know nothing of the actual issue.

The issue is that there is a really serious problem in the UK involving kids as young as 8 carrying knives. This has nothing to do with Laws passed or Bills regarding ages of buying these weapons.

It is illegal for people to stab others.
It is illegal for those under 18 to buy knives.
In both these cases, neither is taken into account when the 12 year old is taking a knife from home, sometimes just a general kitchen knife, to hold as protection.

Understand the issue and get some facts before you join a discussion and TRY to write a coherent argument as this entire last post from you makes you look rather ignorant.

Understand the issue and get some facts before you join a discussion
Understand my point before you call it ludicrous. Because you wanted to assume one thing doesnt make it so. No, I wasnt attacking a post. I wanted to know where the mystery 12 year olds came from. You said my point was ludicrous because it did not deal with the "12 year old issue" yet my point had nothing to do with 12 year olds at all. Should I change my posts because you wish it to talk about 12 year old instead of the problem?

You think 12 year olds are the problem? I am more than happy to discuss 12 year olds with you.

Bored, is this publicity that much different than the soap opera pedophile stuff you were talking about awhile ago? It will generate hype. It will open dialog. This is just one girl with a knife among thousands from comics to movies...you know where real 'heroes' lurk, not pop singing princesses?

The only difference is that you have designated this as negative publicity. Lets see what she says about it and what comes of it. I don't believe in negative or positive publicity, it's just a means to open dialog.

Girl...."look at that, the duchebag princess has a machete. Thats freaking awesome."

Adult..."Whats awesome by that"

Girl..."She looks tough"

Adult..."You know how many tough kids died last week from stab wounds?"

*Dialog opens.*

Or you have this......*silence*

Whats up brother enigma? You need heroes and villians to teach lessons, take something bad and make it good by how you involve yourself with it. I enjoy learning from bad decisions especially when they are not my own.

You obviously didn't get why this was such an issue yet proceeded to join in saying it was a good idea. That is plain ignorance.
The Knife crime issue that is a problem, the one this stupid girl is even referencing, is the teen knife crime. In London alone 2 kids/teens a month are being stabbed to death. That isn't counting people just stabbed and surviving NOR is it a figure encompassing the rest of the country or other demographics.
This is highlighted in Lyris follow up post as she acknowledges the problem of it being at kids.

Again, your ignorance needs to be addressed but I am not going to do that. You obviously have the internet, you can teach yourself about the issue by doing a very quick online search.

I am more than happy to discuss 12 year olds with you.
Makes you sound like a pervert!

You obviously didn't get why this was such an issue yet proceeded to join in saying it was a good idea. That is plain ignorance.
So your problem is with my differing opinion. If I said it was horrible it would no longer be ignorance? I am capable of free thought. Difference of opinion is not ignorance.

Makes you sound like a pervert!

LOL I realized that after I said it.. but trust me, wont be the last time! haha

Kryptonite disagrees: That makes no sense? Parents can't control their kids so let's leave it up to a celebrity?

NO! I did not say that!
They are not leaving it the the celebs!
But the celebs are on all the time. They are famous! Why are they famous? The must do something cool since they are so popular. Show them with knifes on a billboard, and young people will follow their example. To be cool!

It has nothing to do with parents leaving it the celebs at all. But they ARE role models. So they hold some responsibility

You haven't got a difference of opinion here, you have a misunderstanding and then not knowing of the issue.
If you said that it was fine for this woman to brandish a weapon because it wouldn't have any affect on the youth culture it is aimed at, that would be the difference BUT thats not where you went wrong.

Your ignorance is born from the fact you obviously know nothing of this issue that is a really big problem on the streets of the UK.

Ignorance is not an insult IF there is a reason. Are you in the UK?
If you aren't then why should you be aware of our internal issues?
If you are(which I can't believe you are because IF you were you would know all this) then maybe you just don't follow current affairs and live in a cave.

If you choose to be offended by someone calling you ignorant then that is your problem BUT everyone is ignorant of many things, doesn't make them bad people.

LOL I realized that after I said it.. but trust me, wont be the last time! haha

What that you want to discuss 12 year olds or say something THEN think about it?

First one, I have an issue with, second one - well I look forward to it.

If you said that it was fine for this woman to brandish a weapon because it wouldn't have any affect on the youth culture it is aimed at
But what you fail to understand is I simply do not care what it does or does not do with or to the youth culture.

I did not bring up the youth culture. I brought up the possibility that this image could bring about change- not change from the youth culture.

And what you fail to understand is the reason this IS such a big issue in this country and why there is a problem and how your comment in the context of ALL that was completely ludicrous as it has no relation to it and thus nothing to do with the problem this thread confronts.

Your post was simply babble in the midst of a discussion and your ignorance was perpetuated wth comment on what people were talking about while you seemingly ignored it.

Am I the only one that believes that you can have a constructive argument and still respect the opinions of others even if you don't agree with them. Not everything has to resort in personal insults - its a 'discussion' board, there has been quite a few debates recently that have resulted in members ripping each other apart. This does not lend itself well to the representation of the boards and will only result in people being put off posting because they feel intimidated.

It ends now.

So, now someone cant attack an issue from a different angle? He only ever said that it might be good in the very restricted areas mentioned in his post. He never even brought up the issue of the effect on teen culture. He never said that on balance it was a good thing, just that all the effects may not be negative. It's you that's misunderstanding.

thats what i take from it as well, misunderstandings are cool when they finally get understood. :)

IF you choose to read things as an insult they are that, IF you choose to read comments that are constructed using correct words AND then an explanation of WHY it was not intended as an insult then the problem is squarely on your shoulders.

I am sure (moderately) that Scobro is of reasonable intelligence to understand that being ignorant of something does not a bad person make, however he joined into the discussion from a POV that wasn't even a tangent of the issue BUT a parallel. These two involve similar aspects however they are not the same thing.

Again the issue with Kate Perry is the depiction of her holding a Knife while the current problem with teen knife crime is a huge problem in this country. This is NOT a commentary on crime in general but a comment on the people she is viewed by in a culture that is already facing some rather large challenges. By commenting on one thing, Scobro has not actually taken a different angle to the problem BUT has viewed its parallel and taken on that.

These while involving similar things are in entirety completely different issues that the subcultures of of society are facing.

Young people doesn't listen to their parents! It's not about being a good kid, it's about being cool. And a rebel. Celebs also have a responsibilty. They affect the young people. Parents can't do much, and most of them doesn't even care what their kids are doing

Kryptonite disagrees: That makes no sense? Parents can't control their kids so let's leave it up to a celebrity?

Your original comment puts more pressure on a celebrity being a good "role model" and showing kids what is right or wrong than a parents raising or discipling their child to know what is right or wrong. It doesn't matter that a celebrity's face is plastered everywhere for everything. A parent's responsibility is to teach a child what is and is not ok.

Ok, fine, whatever, he "took a parallel". Who cares. The point he made is still just as valid. The topic is about the photo-shoot, not just KP as a role model. Scobro was dealing with that.

Rather coming in the news with a knife, than with anorexic (or something specific on that...).

I almost don't dare to say: but i like the "I Kissed a Girl" song :'(.
