Katy Perry Photo Shoot

All I got from Scobro's post is that not much attention is paid to the news and what not by some people and these sorts are more interested in celebrity lifestyles etc. By her posing with the knife she has introduced a topic of controversy into some of those peoples lives where elsewhile they might ignore it.

Not too much unlike what you were on about, Bored, with the soap opera pedophile thing.

Thats all i got from his post. I saw no rule about a person posing with a knife for a picture being anything but opinion piece, he gave his opinion on why he thought it was a good thing and went onto explain why.

I didn't find it too hard to understand....it's like that great play write/ comedian whats his face says...England/UK/ English speaking Europe and America are separated by the English language. Maybe something got lost in translation?

It all started about a picture and why its bad, he mentioned why in part it might have a good outcome because it opens dialog....that does address the 'issues a subculture of society are facing' I thought it was relevant. Much more so than this "lets defend the legitimacy of my opinions direction"/ distance pissing contest that takes away from the actual topic.

WOW, Katy perrys hot! i dont mind one bit what she's done, i really dont see her influencing anyone to pick up a knife and go stab someone. Its not like theres not violence everywhere anyway, doubt a little pic of a girl with a knife having much effect.

That would be a suitable argument IF this was a worldwide thing, the reason this particular picture has caused such controversy is because of its nature and the current climate in the UK.

Since January 60 young people all over the UK have been killed by Knife crime and only a few days ago a 16 year old was stabbed to death in Liverpool.
2 weeks ago a 14 year old boy was stabbed to death a mere 10 minutes walk from my home.

This is why THAT picture is causing an uproar.

Not too much unlike what you were on about, Bored, with the soap opera pedophile thing. .

Again, drawing a parallel.
While I concede that his initial post wasn't bad, it was just in the wrong place.

It is perfectly fine to discuss these things HOWEVER, the photo isn't aimed at tackling the issue of knife crime around the world, it was supposed to make Katy look 'edgy' on her album for UK release.
This is WHY it is such a big issue and why Scobros comments were ill informed and out of context.
By suggesting it was a good thing in the context of what the picture actually represents is wrong because it isn't about getting people talking AND the people that 'should' be talking anyway wouldn't. The picture simply glorifies and glamourises something that is absolutely unacceptable.

See now this comment I could insult and actually mean as an insult...but I won't.

Children are very impressionable. The simple fact is there would be some that would see this and think

'Katy Perry has a knife, I should get one too. She looks wicked cool.'

Does that mean they would also automatically go out and stab someone - no.
HOWEVER there is also a great deal of stress, bullying and the like within childhood AND if one of those impressionable kids was being bullied, all it would take is that moment of 'I have a knife, I'm not going to take this anymore' and boom, you have a kid that has been knifed.

If you have a knife, or even a gun, you're more likely to retaliate in a situation then if you didn't.

OK, that seems a bit obvious but it is a fact.
The weapon gives you this faux confidence to stand up for yourself but there is no pull back when it has been used to devastating effect.

The mere thought of kids having knives on their person is truly upsetting and the fact some publicity demanding girl uses a rather abhorrent method to promote a simple album is truly disgusting.

Ok, now you're just clutching at straws. Since when does a topic have to contain only posts that fall into your narrow idea of what you want to talk about. The topic is titled "Katy Perry Photoshoot". Scobro was talking about a possible effect of the photoshoot. I happen to agree with him on the point he made, it will raise awareness and open discussion, even if it's not the best (and quite possibly one of the worse) way to do so. Just because you want to talk about the ramifications for the children and teens of the UK, doesn't mean that discussion of any and all other effects are invalid and out of place. Remember, it was you who jumped all over his post and made that the main focus of the topic. Why would you pursue that line of thought if you thought it was in the wrong place?

The picture is the centre of an issue in the UK AND that issue is everything I have said a number of times in this thread.

There are two different things to discuss one with that photo and one without.
The one with is the one I am discussing WHICH spawned an ill placed comment from Scobro.
Is his comment wrong? In this context absolutely, as a comment on something similar BUT not this, no.

The reason this is an issue is because of who it was aimed/targeted at. This picture was aimed for the demographic that would listen to and buy Katie Perrys album which happens to be the same demographic of most popular music albums which are 12 to 15 year olds (mainly girls but boys too actually).

Now if this picture was aimed at adults in an adult format there would be no real issue and we'd probably not be having this conversation.

Take as an example Charlton Heston holding a Gun for the NRA.
In that context it is fine HOWEVER should the image have been used to promote his next album release (I know I know) then there would be uproar (ignoring the dead factor).

BUT that is all beside the point.

The part where his argument and subsequently yours falls flat is that this image was meant exactly as shown. It was supposed to show a dark, edgy side to this girl while also trying to make her look sexy. The signal this sends to impressionable teens is that knives make you this thus you should get a knife.

Why it is out of context is because the picture is representative of a current problem in the UK and Scobro, through ignorance didn't know.

This thread is about that picture and that picture is the basis of one issue.

His suggestion that it opens up to debate is completely out of context with that picture because of who it is aimed at, what it represents and who can actually do anything about it.

But that's entirely missing the point. He, and I, never said that it wasn't all those things you love to keep repeating. That wasn't what he was discussing. He was referring to the effects in the media and those upon the adults who see the picture.

Sure, they don't fall within it's target demographic, and they're going to see it in a different way from which it was intended, but the effect upon them is still a valid point to make. You seem to be ignoring the point here, and just re-iterating your objections to the image as it relates to teens. Those aren't the only people who will see it.

Me too BotD. Count me among the ignorant. I've tried to follow the thread from the beginning. I don't see how the issue is UK specific.

I even visited Google news to get a clue.

The 23-year-old Californian singer, whose smash hit record I Kissed A Girl reached number one in 20 countries, is seen posing with the weapon in a publicity shot for her first album.

The photograph, which is easily accessible online, has angered the families of those affected by knife crime, who are concerned the star will set a bad example to teenagers who idolise her.

Anger At Katy Perry s A Bad Example | Showbiz News | Sky News

The closest I can come to an answer is the UK journalists appear to be making a bigger issue of this than the rest of the world largely because of this...

Kate Perry | Posing With Knife | Army Cadet Murder | Kate Perry Photos

There was a stabbing in Liverpool the day following the release of the photo.

So is that your point BotD? It now becomes an issue only the UK can talk about with any authority, because there was a stabbing in Liverpool. Is it only Liverpudians who can discuss it, or would it meet your approval for discussion if neighboring counties joined in?

And the next time somebody does something horrendous, and blames the maker of Grand Theft Auto, does that mean only the residents of the relevant city may discuss the issue of how violent themes in the media might affect the real world?

"Liverpudians".... bwwahahahahahahaha!!!! sorry, but dammit, that was funny!
"Influence" has been a strong characteristic since the dawn of time. Remember when The Beatles hit the scene? Remember how everyone was sooooo sure they'd disrupt good family values because they wore their hair long? And Elvis! - omg! - he shook his "pelvis"... & surely everyone was going to run out & start having sex because of that!

Hell, rock-n-roll itself has always been deemed "the evil music" - just the infamous "sex, drugs & rock-n-roll" is all one needs to say to get the meaning of just "how evil" all the good, puritan, moral, upstanding citizens think it is.

Through the years, we've had The Sex Pistols, KISS, The Rolling Stones, Alice Cooper, Ozzy Osbourne, Marilyn Manson, etc. Just how much DOES a rock star or tv/movie celebrity influence the youngsters, whether UK or US or anywhere else in the world?

The thing is that kids IMITATE what they think is cool. It's always been that way. From hair styles to dress-codes, to make-up, to speech patterns.... it's what they do. Until they learn to FIND THEMSELVES. Even then, some still will imitate others. And THE BOTTOM LINE? - people SHOULD BE held responsible for their own actions. So if the stabbings in the UK increase because of this knife-weilding chick, is it FAIR to REALLY blame HER?

Personally, I think the stabbings will increase with or without her photo being plastered everywhere for the young impressionable minds to see. The recent increase in stabbings is more about societal & economic problems than hip hop stars & coolness.

Another point to consider: she isn't stabbing anyone in the photo. There's no blood dripping from the blade, she's not even holding it aggressively - nothing to indicate stabbing at all. She's simply holding a knife. And I'm 100% sure it's all done for publicity. Anything that is controversial in any manner will get the public's attention. But it's clearly to sell albums - not to engage stabbing crimes.

And I don't know her from hell, (never heard of her) but she is hot. 😉

well said, but where do celebrities look to for their influence? We know that billy idol looked at Spike:) Culture itself makes the trends, celebs are just the heralds of it to those looking for something.

And that's the elephant in the room. That's what this conversation has been obfuscating with a misdirecting argument to this point, by trying to make the case UK specific.
So is it just me or is Katy Perry seriously overrated. At first I totally loved her and now I just find her more annoying than anything else. Hm, I do think she is adorable though.

just wondered if the tk maxx story that was in the news a month or so back about them selling jakects with a consealed kinfe in the pocket raised as much fuss as a photo of a celeb with one. tk maxx denied knowing the jaket contained the knife and dont no how many where sold before the alarm was raised when somebody parents found out about it when there kid bought one. the photo was irrisponsible but the jaket is just rediculous!!!

don't know if this issue was bought up when it was in the news but just thought i'd say something incase it hadn't

I'm sorry, but just because people die of being stabbed to death, does not mean someone should not be allowed to take a photoshoot involving knives. I think people like to get angry just for the sake of it.

She's insensitive, that's really all she can be accused of in my opinion. To someone who has lost someone to knife crime, it must be a very sad and angering picture to see. But anyone who goes out and stabs someone and blames it on this picture, i know i won't believe it. I just don't buy that celebrities have that much influence, i think if someone commits a crime, it's their choice. Blaming tv and celebrities, is an excuse.
And if they do have that much influence, it really saddens me. It really is time that Parents/ Family/ Guardians/ Teachers teach kids proper role models. In the chemist the other day, i seen a young girl, maybe 12, asking her mom to buy her paris hilton perfume. The woman's famous for having a rich family and a sex tape, why do girls want to be like her.
I wonder how many young women and men, Paris' age are in labs right now, trying to cure cancer, why aren't these people in the pubic eye. Sad World.

We interupt this discussion to bring you some breaking news.

Well. It broke a good 3 days ago, but nobody pays Katy Perry any attention, so no-one noticed.

It would seem, that SpoonsAreNoLongerCool.

To be fair, I actually did lol at this response she made....but mostly becasue of Jen. Anyone have any thoughts?

OMG, that's awesome. Way to bring some humor to a tense situation. Go Jen!

Edit

But . . . but . . . it's a spoon! That's not Spoons with the spoon?

I feel so betrayed.

pst. That's Katy Perry. Jen will kill you now. XD
ARRRRRRRRRRRGGHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! *dies*

Don't you people GET IT? SPOONS ARE COOL, KATY PERRY IS NOT COOL, therefore, PUT DOWN THE SPOON PERRY, YOU FAKER!!

seconded. It's nice not to go militant when speaking of tense subjects.

Humor is a much needed oddity commodity, least untill someone starts hollering 'blasphemy'. Then save your giggles for home and haul butt.

Good job Jen and 5x5, you're in before 'blasphemey'.

Its a sad topic (so why do i keep coming back to it like a bug to a zapper) and I could use the giggle, well done!

edit: Spoons, your highbrow thinking has stumped me untill you explained it. but good comedy is both smart and funny and I laugh hardest at the jokes that need the explaining.

It's still funny, nya-nay-naynay-nay 😛
