SMG: Joss has had certain episodes planned from the get-go. I knew Dawn was coming two years in advance..... Willow was always supposed to go bad. Willow was supposed to go bad a year before she did, but Joss loved Tara and Willow, so that story line pushed another year.... I honestly believe his original intention was to put Buffy and Xander together. I really do believe that.
Ok, so, as you can see from that article, most of the series was planned from the beginning. So, what I'm saying is that maybe they knew Faith was coming along, and the way to get Faith onto the scene was to kill off Kendra. That's just my theory though.
