Last night I was talking to someoine and thay asked me this. What is it that makes someone actually kill themselves? So I was wondering what you guys thought...

I have a few reasons I would do it. Cancer, found out that I couldn't get the operation I want (this is a possible one not definite), inoperable tumor that I had 0% chance of living with, etc.

I have too strong a will to live so I can't imagine any scenarios that would make me kill myself.

That's also why I can't imagine why other people would do it. I get their reasons but not how they could go so low to do something like that.

Stress, feeling un-loved, loss of someone close to them, Hating themselves, kids being mean to them... There are lots of reasons. Its a real bummer when things get that hard for somebody though

Commiting suicide, for some, is an escape. From someone who had actually attempted suicide (albeit, mine was a half hearted attempt), it is usually because life doesn't seem worth the work. Depression... god, that's the worst thing in the world. It weighs down on your soul, and it feels as if the weight will never be lifted.

Most people who attempt/commit suicide have been reaching out for someone, yet no one notices. It's hard to be open when everything inside of you is aching from lonliness and hurt. And when you do reach out, and the effort is spurned, you just go deeper inside of yourself. Which is dangerous.

That's why I'm a cutter. I'm trying to pinpoint the pain, all of the stuff that hurts inside. I'm not proud of it, but it does relieve stress.

I think people commit suicide because they feel their life is unbearable. Some think no one would miss them if they did, and some think people would actually benefit from the loss.

"Some think no one would miss them if they did, and some think people would actually benefit from the loss."
It's scary but that is actually a reason to commit suicide, while it should be a reason not to. I know how it is to feel that way, and how that makes you not want to live anymore. I am in no way suicidal today, I would never kill myself, I sort of made that decision years ago (after some years when I at least thought a lot about that "solution").
It's impossible to say what makes someone commit suicide. There doesn't have to be a "real reason". I mean, some people sort of look down on people who are depressed for no obvious reason (like the death of a family member or something like that). They think that you can't be "depressed" for real if you haven't experienced anything really terrible. Or that you can't be seriously depressed and still laugh all the time (which is of course very much possible). Suicide can be a real decision, seriously made by someone who really believes that is the Only option, that there is no other way. Why some people make that decision is so hard to say, since it is probably very very different for every single person...

I would have given you reputation for that post, but I need to spread some around first. But I agreed with everything you said, Eponinethen.

I have the most happy go-lucky good friend you could ever see, and just two nights ago, he called another good friend of ours, and told her he was about to kill himself. She calmed him down, thankfully. He has been diagnosed with depression, but you'd never know it.

No one can really know why, exactly, because everyone is different. This has all been said before, so I might as well no repeat others who posted before me, but No one can actually know why for each person. What I HATE though, are people who joke about this. Saying "Oh, I'm gonna kill myself" over one thing, and think it's either funny, or know deep down they'd never do it. I know I'm being a finicky person here, but when someone insults another by saying things like that, it's one of the things that REALLY gets me mad.

I've almost had one of best friend taken from me, so now I realise how it affect people. Usually it's me being the one affecting others. I've had wonderful friends throught these past years who've supported me, but when it comes down to it, you are always alone. It's a sad thing, but it's true.

I hope I'm finding you all in good health and spirits...pass a little around to me, will ya? 🙂

So true. Even when you are popular and have tons of friends you are alone, Buffy said so herself. Even if you don't feel like you are alone with friends, at the end of the day, even with a lover beside you in bed you are alone.

Its a last resort... When you think that you have no where else to turn... One of my best friends committed suicide not too long ago... 3 months actually... And I'm still finding it hard to deal with... But thats the thing that I've had to come to terms with... Theres no way you could stop them... If that's what they really want to do... And not for attention, actually do it... Then you know its the end of the line... There had to be something terribly wrong for them to choose death as a last resort...

I have actually been in this position. I never went so far as to try anything, but there was a low point in my life a year or so ago when if the means had been there, I might have tried it.

Some of the reason for it is the state of the world today. I see the world becoming a place I'm not sure I'd want to live in.

But, I figure I'll get to piss more people off by staying around and trying to change things.

I have at least two friends who have tried committing suicide... One very close friend (we've been friends since she was born), tried to kill herself some years ago.. I didn't find out until two days after.. that she had been in the hospital.. After taking lots and lots of pills she had gone out, and met some friends who had called an ambulance.. When she got to the hospital they didn't think she was going to survive, but she did. Before this happened, I had been really scared.. that it would, cause I knew she was really depressed (everyone knew, everyone tried to help her). (Every time the phone rang, before this happened, I thought it was someone who called to tell me that this friend was dead...)

I very much agree, about the joking thing.. On christmas eve my almost-cousin was here, and she said it every minute, like "He's so stupid I'm gonna kill myself" or "If they do that I'll commit suicide". I couldn't believe her.. Of course she wasn't serious but I hate it when people talk like that..

I agree, eponinethen. It drives me mad when people joke about things like that. I don't know. I get touchy when someone sees a cut on someones arm and yells out "CUTTER!!!" and they all laugh...it's happened to me, and I just looked at him. He's all "Whoa, are you seriously?" ...I guess because alot of people I know are like this...suicidal and such...it doesn't bother me. Nothing suprises me much these days.

{Heres a thread that might interest a few people while we're on the topic...here. }

Hm, nothing really surprises me either. But sometimes I wish it did, 'cause I'm not sure you're supposed to get used to these things.. So sometimes I act surprised although I'm not (sounds stupid, I know).

Well, I can see why you'd suggest we read that thread. And cutting sure can be related to this (obviously it is in some ways). There's just one thing that bothers me.. And that is the fact that so many people can't see that you can be depressed or suicidal without cutting yourself or having anorexia.. or something else "selfdestructive"... I'm not saying you're saying that Silve, it's just that.. I used to think about that a lot. 'Cause, when I used to be a lot more depressed then I am these days.. people kinda didn't take it seriously (the one or two times I started trying to talk to someone) because I didn't have scars on my arms, or I wasn't terrible thin.. and I ate.. and all that.

As I posted in that thread, I've never cut myself. And the biggest reason is because I was too scared.. Just like why I never tried committing suicide. (I'm talking about years ago now.) But I know many people who cut themselves.. And I know Many people with eating disorders.. And I know almost no-one who hasn't been seriously depressed.. or something similar. This scares me. I know it sounds stupid, but I think the people who do these thing are bad for their friends.. I don't mean they shouldn't be with their friends (they should have all the best friends in the world).. But, I am certainly affected by how my friends feel and what they do to themselves and others.. That's what I mean by saying it scares me that I'm getting used to this, and that this kind of behaviour doesn't surprise me.. Because when it becomes "normal"... I don't know.. It's no good, that's for sure. (Forgive me if I'm making no sense...)

I completely agree with you, and you make the most sense in the world. Everything you said was true.

Again, I agree because it has been brought to reality for me. The near loss of my friend really woke me up to how scary it is. That I'm doing that to my friends. It feels awful.

And it feels awful again, seeing it as normal. Of course, no one likes to think of it as the way the world works...but it does. It shouldn't, but some things just happen.

whenever i get depressed (and yes even with my cheery disposition it does happen) i just laught, not at anything but because i can if only to remind myself. tis an amazing thing you force yourself to laugh and feel a complete berk then that just makes you giggle and you feel the stress role off you like ripples of good.

the only thing better is to do it in a crowd :happy56:

I would say that sheer depression, loneliness and the feeling of "nothing to live for" would do it for me. That would be the only time that I would think about it. But I have family to think about. And I have something to prove. So I have no reason to kill myself. Although, at the lowest points it sometimes comforts me to think that I have control over that. (Not suicidal.) I just have too much to live for really.

Then people think you know something 🙂. Or are just completely insane. :confused5

who gives a damn what they think, your be happy and more importantly you realise you look like a damn fool most the time anyway so might as well learn to live with it and not let it bother you.

its just another thing to laugh at!
