Killing Themselves

Laughter is indeed the best medicine, as Faldor said!

I've never even come close to considering this as an option. I dislike pain too much, and have far too much stuff left to do before I shuffle off this mortal coil. In times when I get frustrated, I just think that if nothing else, there are a couple of people out there that desperately need me to kick their asses, so I'm not leaving until I do!

Suicide usually stems from long term depression, but depression has a number of potential causes, and every case of suicide is different in that respect. In my experience, it usually comes from internalising something that's making you profoundly unhappy whatever that may be. It could come from be loneliness, desperately low self esteem, chemical abuse, personal problems, powerful self loathing, etc

I seriously considered it for about six years or so, and didn't go through with it purely because I couldn't find a way to get it done without my family finding me afterwards. The emotional aftermath it leaves behind is devastating. The people left behind always create this guilt, they assume that they should have noticed or done something, but the simple fact is that suicidal people do not become suicidal overnight. They have time to create elaborate and finely tuned defenses. You can't pick a suicidal person out of a crowd - they'll always be the other one, and there is no average suicide victim. For me, suicide offered the only immediate escape route. I looked around and couldn't see anything at all to justify how much work I did every day to look normal. I was tired of maintaining the illusion that I was fine, but I couldn't bear upsetting other people when I tried to explain that something was wrong. There was nothing to remedy the reasons I was so unhappy so from where I was standing, why bother carrying on?

Luckily, by then, I'd recognised that there are highs and lows, and that no matter how hopeless I felt at the time, it could get better. It's not like suicide is reversible, so the conclusion I came to was that I had an obligation to give the alternative a shot. And here I am. :vpleased: I can't say I don't frequently consider suicide attractive, I just no longer consider it an option and the lows come less and less. Finishing school lifted a massive weight off my shoulders. Not in a million years would I advocate dropping out - that just creates extra problems - but if you're extremely unhappy at school, all I can say is hang on, it'll be over soon. My beef with school wasn't entirely the education part of it, just that 70% of the schoolgoing population, teachers included, truly do aim to make life a living hell for everybody else, and when you're wrestling with your sexuality in a rural Irish Catholic school, crank that right up to 95%.

Personally, I don't feel offended if somebody makes a joke about it as long as there isn't any real feeling behind it. They don't mean any harm or anything they're just being a little tasteless, and many good jokes are. :wink0:

Jill, I'm happy you decided to stay with us, along with all the rest of you who did. Suicide is permanent, as you said, and there are so many things to live for! As you said, it will get better. I urge anyone having the "to be, or not to be" debate to get someone you trust to talk to. Here, at school, at home, where ever...just get someone to help you talk it out. You can find someone who cares...hell, even some moldy old dwarf on the BB!😉

Give me a situation where it's "complicated" (sans being terminally ill) and I'll show you it's not. People refuse to take responsibility for their lives anymore. If you're not living in a third world country with flies over your bloated belly then you really shouldn't be complaining.

Suicide is lazy. It's the easy escape rather than trying to put together the pieces of our broken lives and we as a society have been so lax with responsbility lately.

If you're depressed--get help sheesh.

Unfortunately, all of those who need help, sometimes do not see that there is a problem. Also, "help" can get expensive and without the right coverage, people may be hesitant or unable to pursue such help.

It depends on where you're from. In America there's load of free counselors, help lines, group sessions. Take my current state for instance. In Texas there are innumerable amounts of assistance for therapy and yet we seem to breed the most killer moms around.

I really have no pity when it comes to this matter. We've all been through many things and who on this board or this world for that matter can say "I've lived a perfect life of ups and no downs" but to go so far as to kill yourself? Bah.

I don't think it's possible to compare feelings like this. I can't give you a situation so that you can explain to me why it's not complicated. It might not be complicated to you, you might see that there is a really easy way to solve everything, but you have no idea what I am feeling. You can't tell me that it isn't complicated because everything feels different to every person. I hate it when people believe that just because you haven't experienced something really terrible, you're not allowed to feel really bad or be depressed.

Yes, I see what you're ssaying, we shouldn't walk around feeling sorry for ourselves, because there's always someone who has a more complicated or more difficult situation, but to me that doesn't mean I should shut off what I'm feeling, because that is impossible (and as I said, I don't think it's possible to compare like that). Suicide might be the "easy" escape, but for some people it feels like the only thing to do.. And if someone feels that the only possible thing to do it to kill yourself, how can you say that that situation isn't complicated? Sure, maybe there is another way to deal with it, there probably is, and maybe that person is exaggerating their pain, but they're still feeling the pain, weather it's "made up"/in their mind or pain caused by someone/something else..

Ah, sorry, I'm just.. I hate it when people tell someone not to feel what they're feeling, or that they aren't actually feeling what they believe they do.. Because obviously no-one can know better than me what I am feeling.

No ones telling you to feel anyway. I dont feel the situation is complicated and so you feel it is. Perhaps a mom didn't let her kid go to the Britney Spears concert or whatever and she's read to do herself in then......get help. That's really not complicated at all.

If you have a problem---work to solve it dont be a wuss about it and say well I feel really crappy lets end my life because that's the smart way out .....why when I'm dead all my problems will be solved..... That's as stupid as saying well I'm a drunk but if I drink some more I won't care so chug!

No one has the right to tell anyone to feel anyway but everyone has the right to tell people to get help. Everyone.

But it can be, it can be complicated to get help. I'm all for getting help, everyone should get help but sometimes it's not as easy as it sounds. Sometimes counselling isn't the answer either. Sometimes you just have to live through the hard times, and some people can't do that. I'm not saying suicide is smart, I wouldn't want anyone to kill themselves and I'd want them all to get help.. but if it was that easy, I don't think people would commit suicide.

Yeah and some people can't do that. I know everyone is feeling really bad from time to time.. but we react differently to it, and some can deal with it, some can't. Personally I would never commit suicide, but I do understand people who would (I wish they didn't, but, I understand)..

I love how people always try to "understand" and go so far as to "stick up" for people trying to kill themselves. You know what? Suicide is cool.

Dr. Kevorkian is my hero.

I've been avoiding this thread so far because a friend of mine committed suicide and on several levels i've still not dealt with it.

ProphecyGirl, I find your comments to be very insensitive, but hey maybe thats just me. People try to understand suicide because it helps them to try and move on with their their lives if they have been left behind. I do not condone what my friend did, but neither am I angry at him. He felt he had no other option and that was his decision to make and we have to live with the consequences as best as we can.

You can never understand why someone commits suicide. That's the worst part about being on the outside after it happens. But that is why people do it, because no one really understands them. Its not as simple as "getting help", because if the option of commiting suicide is there, its obviously not the first time it has been placed in their mind. Most people have had the thought of "not living" atleast once, but most push it away and never think of it again. There are those who just cant push it away, and help is not an option for them. Not in their minds. It is easier to offer help, than to ask for it, but if you have no idea whats going on with someone, it may be too late to offer that help. That's what happened in my case. We were all too late, and no one understood why it happened. I still dream about it, about him, because I will never understand.

My comments are insensitive. I said I have no pity on this issue. Was that not clear? I feel no reason to be sensitive to a bunch of people who killed themselves because they were weak. It is natures way however. The weak don't last very long. People who kill themselves are weak so in essence you're all right because they don't have a place in this world.
