I get these "Urban Legend" type hoax emails all the time from my friends, because apparently....I'm gullible. I don't know why they think I'm just going to sign some petition and shoot it off to all of my friends, thus perpetuating the myth, but there ya go.

This is the one I got today:

Subject: Fw: Removal of Joel Osteen and other pastors

PLEASE READ ENTIRE E-MAIL.
SUBJECT: No more Joel Olsteen, TD Jakes, Eddie Long, Joyce Meyer, Creflo Dollar, or Charles Stanley????

Please, if you don't wish to participate, return this email to whoever sent it to you so they can at least keep this email going or forward it to some one you know who will wish to participate. Dr. Dobson is going on CNBC to urge every Christian to get involved. I hope you will sign and forward to all your family and friends.
An organization has been granted a Federal Hearing on the same subject by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in Washington, D.C. Their petition, Number 2493, would ultimately pave the way to stop the reading of the gospel of our Lord a nd Savior, on the airwaves of America . They got 287,000 signatures to back their stand! If this attempt is successful, all Sunday worship services being broadcast on the radio or by television will be stopped.
This group is also campaigning to remove all Christmas programs and Christmas carols from public schools!
You as a Christian can help! We are praying for at least 1 million signatures. This would defeat their effort and show that there are many Christians alive, well and concerned about our country.
As Christians, we must unite on this. Please don't take this lightly. We ignored one lady once and lost prayer in our schools and in offices across the nation. Please stand up for your religious freedom and let your voice be heard. Together we can make a difference in our country while creating an opportunity for the lost to know the Lord.
Please press forward, CLEAN UP THE MESSAGE, and for ward t his to everyone you think should read this.
Now, please sign your name at the bottom (you can only add your name after you have pressed 'Forward'
or (cut and paste the text).
Don't delete any other names, just go to the next number and type your name.
Please do not sign jointly, such as Mr. & Mrs., each person should sign his/her own name.
Please defeat this organization and keep the right of our freedom of religion. When you get to 1000 please e-mail back to:

What interesting knee-jerk-sign-the-petition-to-save-pond-scum-from-developers emails have you gotten lately?

I got one from my mom about a month ago about how bad NutraSweet was for you--causing everything from Cerebal Palsy to cancer. The writer wanted us to let everyone we had ever met know that NutraSweet can kill you and to stop drinking diet sodas, etc.

Oh yeah, I've seen that one and there's also one about storing your food in plastic containers. Same thing.....causes cancer in laboratory animals. Next thing you know, the arm you use to open the plastic container your food is in will atrophy and fall off.

Diet pop gives you signs of MS (Multiple Sclerosis) and Margarine is one (1) molecule away from being plastic.

It doesn't happen to everyone and you don't get M.S. you just get the signs of M.S. But it isn't exactly M.S. People have been diagnosed wrong beside of deit Pop.

Oh, and Carbon Dioxide is one molecule away from Oxygen. Lots of harmful things are one molecule away from non-harmful (or even beneficial) things.

No matter what we do these days pretty much everything is bad for us. If it's not one thing that kills us it's another. Just enjoy life and take care of yourself. I am going to drink my pop and eat my margarine. 😉

Not by itself, I hope. Yuck. :)
The original post E-Mail was a good one, can I sign the petition ?
I had an E- mail recently of one I sent years ago, if I find it I'll write it here, but basically it referred to training.

These things show up in my MySpace bulletins all the time.
I just get really mad when someone posts a chain petition (and online petitions in this form are almost always worthless and get nothing accomplished anyway), and it is proven to be false somewhere credible on the internet, but people still keep posting it over and over and over years and years after it has been shown to be false.
I've still got people posting Bonsai Kitten petitions. Sigh.

Hell, there are people who still believe the Proctor & Gamble satanist bullshit more than twenty years after it started, and even claim to have seen the Donahue - or Sally Jesse Raphael, or Oprah, or whatever current show is being passed around - episode where the P & G president "admitted" it, despite the fact that no such show ever aired, and at least two Amway reps have been successfully sued in connection with the rumor.

Or how about the one passing around an alleged verse of the Koran which instructs Muslims to attack the United States (a real trick, considering the US didn't even exist when the Koran was written.) I get that one fairly regularly from acquaintances, whom I always ask, "Didn't you even bother - like I did - to check the referenced verses against the Koran (which is readily available) before you sent it back out to everybody on your mailing list? If you had, you'd have seen that the actual referenced verse doesn't say anything even remotely similar to what's in the e-mail."

All I can say is that people who create these things and people who spread them have two things in common:

1. Too much time on their hands, and
2. Too few functioning brain cells in their heads...

Oh yeah, and it's companion email, the one that cites the Koran as saying that the US will have it's revenge......something about awakening the Eagle and I don't know what else.....I tried to find the verse it cited in my copy of the Koran, but it doesn't even exist!

Heh, wouldn't that put the US on the same footing as Islamic extremists.....jihad?

To be honest I don't tend to read them. I see the FW: and I'm compelled to hit delete.

I think I had one warning girls about getting into their car at night time. It was pretty serious sounding but you send them on and you just get more... so I don't do it.

There are a few that I indulge though... well, I read them and if they're funny/cute I'll pass them on to close friends - mostly attached PPS slide shows and videos. I never meet the usual 15 friend quota so I never get good luck for the rest of my life but maybe I'm just not trying. lol ::huh1::

LOL, I don't usually meet the 15 friend quota, either! I read the FW:, tho, most of the time just out of curiosity, I wanna see what it is I'm supposed to be fighting against today. My personal favorites, more than the hoax-of-the-day, tho, are the ones that talk about God and christian values.....and if I don't pass them on I'm going to burn in hell like the evil person I am.....because I'll pass a joke on in a New York minute, so why can't I pass this on? I must be an un-believer. <rolls eyes> I see that as a by-product of our general societal shift toward fundamentalism, but maybe that's just me.....

Edit:

Blondie Bear agrees: Being a (nondenominational) Christian, I've always found it hilarious that people expect you to "prove" your Christianness by forwarding an e-mail, of all things.

Exactly! Like my religion is anyone's business but mine in the first place....and second, who are THEY to judge my degree of faith by whether I forward an email to everyone I have ever met RIGHT NOW?

There's a particularly appalling email doing the rounds for the last few years warning about a new type of date rape drug that leaves it's victims sterile. Supposedly, it's a drug farmers use to sterilise horses. It might even "quote" a real, local hospital to try and sound a bit more credible.

So just in case anybody ever gets sent that mail - it is completely made up. Totally, absolutely, 100% made up. Presumably the person who sent it to you didn't know that, but whoever started sending it did. It's the same crap as any other chain letter, the idea being that the more shocking the subject matter, the more likely you are to forward it.

Just so y'all know.

I've gotten a few e mails that have been addressed to different people. Usually one letter off from my address. Which is truly bizarre. A postman putting a letter in the wrong letterbox I get, but an email. Plus, the content has been mostly jumbled nonsense.
