Kristy Swanson as Buffy

After being so used to seeing Sarah as Buffy, the movie was kinda weird for me to watch. I wasn't impressed by Swanson's performance, but I will say that it was pretty average. Just my opinion though
 
Well I hated the movie, but not because of Kristy... I thought she did an ok job with the material she was given, but I thought she was a little old for the part- no way did she convince me she was young enough to be in high school.

I think that Kristy, did a good job with the material that she had to work with and the direction that she was given, as did Donald Southerland, Rutger Hauer, and everyone else involved with the movie. The problem was that the cast, for one reason or another, didn't match the characters that they were supposed to play, and the story itself wasn't presented properly. They couldn't decide whether they were telling a horror/action story with comedic elements, or a comedy with horror/action elements, consequently they missed out on all three genres.

Joss says, in not these exact words, that Donald Sutherland was an ass. The real problem probably lies with the Kuzuis. It's been a long time since I've seen it- I probably should give it another try.
 
Like I said, it was my first exposure. I was 16 and would watch it over and over again with my best friend at the time and all I wanted was to be like buffy. Besides, she does deliver some quite buffy-esq lines

after punching merrick - "I never hit anybody before" to which he responds, "well you did remarkably well" and she's amazed "I didn't even break a nail!

merrick "you must never forget the cardinal rule. One vampire is much easier to kill than 10 vampires"
Buffy "does the word 'duh' mean anything to you?"

Merrick: "none of my other slayers ever gave me this much trouble."
Buffy: "And where are they now? Hello!"

I re-watched the movie not too long ago, and was really surprised to see that it wasn't nearly as bad as I remembered it being. Kristy actually did quite a good job as Buffy, I thought.

Comparing the movie to Joss's script, it seems like the biggest problems were the changes to Donald Sutherland's character... dumb stuff that made him into some kind of eternal supernatural being... and the final confrontations between Buffy and the big boss vampires, which got turned into goofy slapstick comedy for some reason.

Kristy Swanson, Luke Perry and David Arquette did good jobs.

Pee-Wee Herman was okay except for his wacky death scene

Donald Sutherland and Rutger Hauer sucked

And Stephen Root was the best thing in the movie, as Buffy's trippy guidance counselor.

It was about 80% of a good movie, but the other 20% was impossible to ignore.

Watching the movie after becoming such a huge fan of the series, I have a better appreciation for it and Kristy as Buffy. I can watch the movie now and giggle at it, whereas before I saw the show I watched it and went "WTF is this crap?! This is stupid as hell." LOL
 
Kristy was the first Buffy I saw so I liked her. She does look too old in the movie to be a high school student (not that that's rare in movies) but I thought she was good with the portrayal and caught the 'tone' well. The failures of the movie, in my opinion, don't lie on her shoulders. Her Buffy was likeable and edgy when she needed to be .

I liked the movie, flawed though it is, and liked her as Buffy. A movie never allows the actors to nuance their character as much as a TV show does, so for what was demanded of her, I thought she did well.
 
I've never been able to see Kristy Swanson as Buffy mostly because I didn't see the movie until after I'd watched BtVS. Therefore by the time I'd seen the movie I was convinced that SMG was Buffy. I'd love to watch it again and see what I thought now. I can always remember never being engaged by the film as a whole, which is strange because I'll give most films my attention.

In defense of these two gentlemen, I would simply like to point out that they did the best that they could with what they had to work with. Look at Donald Sutherland's performances in "MASH" and "Klute," and Hauer's performance in "Ladyhawke," probably one of the greatest fantasy movies of all time, and you will see that these are talented actors. Don't blame them for being stuck with crappy roles in a crappy movie.

See, I agree... they are very talented actors, both favorites of mine.

Which is why I blame them for the crappy job they did in these crappy roles - it's kind of like Charisma in s4 of Angel (evil Cordy was not her best hour) - perhaps the role was crappy but watching the performance you definitely get the feeling that the actors thought so too and just simply didn't even try to make an effort. I think, regardless of the quality of the role, actors talented as those two gentlemen could and should have done a better job in the Buffy movie. To me they just seemed disinterested in doing so and the movie suffers for it (and for a lot of other reasons as well of course).

And who can really blame them for that? This is a damned if they do and damned if they don't situation. Certainly they had the talent to make their roles better, but they also had the professionalism to realize that the director is the final authority in what he or she wants. It could be argued that they should have stood up to him, but if the goal was to make the movie a farce (which it was, but not in a good way) then they might have just went along with the plan to make both characters, in their own way, look like total idiots. It's really too bad that they couldn't have gotten Leslie Neilson to play Lothos and someone like Chevy Chase or Bill Murry, but with an English accent, to play Merrik. Of course then, it would have been titled "Lothos Meets Merrik And His Slayer" or some such, since Kristy would have been totally overshadowed.

Joss: "The thing is, people always make fun of Rutger Hauer. Even though he was big and silly and looked kind of goofy in the movie, I have to give him credit, because he was there. He was into it. Whereas Donald was just... He would rewrite all his dialogue, and the director would let him. He can't write - he's not a writer - so the dialogue would not make sense. And he had a very bad attitude. He was incredibly rude to the director, he was rude to everyone around him, he was just a real pain. And to see him destroying my stuff... Some people didn't notice. Some people liked him in the movie. Because he's Donald Sutherland. He's a great actor. He can read the phone book, and I'm interested. But the thing is, he acts well enough that you didn't notice, with his little rewrites, and his little ideas about what his character should do, that he was actually destroying the movie more than Rutger was." Rutger Hauer's part was extensively screwed with and changed from what Joss originally wrote, especially the manner of his death. I believe Kristy Swanson mentioned at DragonCon 2009 that he spent a lot of his time making passes at her, so that probably didn't help his concentration.
