LA Can Go To Hell

Am I the only one to notice that the initial threat in Angel Season 4 (sending the city to hell by blotting out the sun, thereby releasing all of the demons to roam freely all the time), and the end result of Angel Season 5 AND the setting for Season 6 are basically the same? Is Whedon running out of plot devices?

Literally sending LA to a hell dimension seemed kind of novel to me. It wasn't what I was imagining a Season 6 would be, way back when. I thought they were just gonna destroy LA, put Team Angel in a Road Warrior-style dystopia or something. Still don't get what's going on in "our" dimension if LA's actually...elsewhere.

After the Fall LA makes darkened Season 4 LA look like a trip to Cancun if you ask me. I just wish it were better executed.

But yeah, Joss definitely has his favored devices and themes that recur, no doubt.

It's definitely an annoying fanboy thing... but it still bugging the hell out of me! 😛 Surely LA's status would be a great reason for the US military to step up their campaign against the Slayers - though they had nothing to do with it? Is Buffy aware of Angel's current fate or that Spike is alive? (I know Buffy has stated she doesn't get the reasoning behind the Immortal dating her imposter, doesn't mean she doesn't know Spike is alive). Did Buffy try to come to Team Angel's aid on the first night LA went to Hell? ...and of course, what DOES the outside world make of it? I'm sure all will be revealed in time though...

As for LA's "disappearance," for all we know the time spent in the hell dimension may be only a split second in our time. Possibly the entire city will be emptied of demons, completely restored to its former glory, and the entire population wiped clean of any memory of their little hell trip, and it all happen so quickly in our time that no one even notices that anything was amiss.

Maybe Joss just *really* hates L.A. haha. The whole 'L.A sucked into hell' thing does come up quite a lot in Angel, but while it's a recurring theme I don't believe the storyline itself is ever actually repeated as it always done in an entirely different way through an entirely different angle.
But I always strongly suspected that the continued threat of L.A becoming a hellhole was the writers' metaphor for their opinion that it already is. A hellhole that is, hehe.

If you think about it, The Master, Angelus, and the First Evil all wanted to create hell on Earth too. (Glory tried it too, but not on purpose.) It's just something that feels very natural for a demon to want.
