Lack of shows for Buffy & Angel cast

Hey everyone, hope you are all well


I was looking through some of the actors profiles on IMDB checking through their most previous and upcoming work, and it's pretty surprising how after Buffy and Angel, the large majority haven't really hit the ground running with any continuous roles.

DB was probably the best off, having had a long stint on Buffy, then his own show (Angel,obviously lol) and then Bones which is still running now.

SMG had Ringer which probably should have continued, and now The Crazy Ones, I know she wanted to try her hand at movies and if she hadn't then who knows.


As for the rest though, more so Marsters and Dushku, is it surprising that nobody has else has really had any more long running series on T.V? Or do you think that there was a stigma attached to them after Buffy & Angel that anything they could do that would be long running would be Vampire/Horror related?

Quite a few of the actors went on to other things, writing scripts, writing books, being in films, directing films, producing films, stage plays.
Amber Benson did a lot of work with her books, films and making films. Anthony Head has done a heck of a lot of stuff. Charity work, personal appearances, being in Dr. Who, being a narrator on Dr. Who, films like Repo the Genetic Opera, Ghost Rider 2. There isn't that many of the name actors who haven't done much work.

Yeah I'd think David and Alyson had the best career.

Sarah tried out for film, but it didn't seem to work out.

ASH has been on a few shows in the UK.

Dushku has lead 2 shows, Tru Calling and Dollhouse and a similar movie career to Sarah

Nick had a show right after Buffy but it got cancelled.

I dont know if he still does it, but James is a theatre actor, maybe he's stuck to that, and has a few small parts in a couple of TV shows, plus is had another career as a musician.

I'm not surprised Nick or James hasn't lead a show, I wouldn't have put them in a lead role.

Nick had a recurring character didn't he, on Criminal Minds or one of those other crime dramas?

ASH has been involved in a lot of things, particularly BBC, so most Americans wouldn't have heard of them.

James is on TV every so often. In a few episodes of Caprica, Torchwood, Hawaii 5-0.

I was really hoping that J. August Richard's character in SHIELD would be recurring. I loved that character and that episode, and him lol.

I think it's just plain hard to make it in Hollywood!

I'm telling you that Sarah is no dummy hooking up with Robin Williams for The Crazy Ones- career booster for sure! I completely disagree with [MENTION=11615]Steven123[/MENTION] about Ringer- it was terrible and I'm glad it was cancelled (although I feel awful for saying that!).

Totally agree, I watched Ringer (though I dont think I saw the last few episodes) but I was glad when it got cancelled and released Sarah to do other things, TCO is up and down on how good it is, but I still think it's more entertaining then Ringer

Yeah, for the most part none of them have gone on to be hugely successful but a good number have been given other work on Joss projects.

I dont think the actors involved in BTVS have a stigma but more of a typecast situation going on with them, not so much because of BTVS, but because of their appearances in Whedon projects and the Sci fi genre. A lot of times they are playing very similar characters.

I think looking at it, when you look at how successful they were in both BtVS and Angel, for the most part, I think it was probably expected that the majority of them probably would of had more substantial roles in other long running series, most of them pop up in shows here and there, sometimes as recurring characters and other times as one offs.

It's a shame that a few of them were never put together in one of the other shows as a one off episode, would have been good for a mini reunion.

Alexis Denisof and Amy Acker have had steady work in TV and plays and recently starred in the Joss Whedon Movie "Much Ado about Nothing".

I couldn't disagree more, I think most of the cast of Buffy and Angel became very successful.

David, Alyson, SMG, ASH, Seth Green all have had pretty packed careers, they might not be A listers but they have had constant work, and all of them featured in a good amount of movie and/or shows.

Eliza Dushku, Alexis Denisof, Amy Acker, Michelle Trachtenberg have all been fairly successful also.

James did music, had a few small recurring roles, Amber Benson has done tons of stuff behing the camera and with her writing.

I think overall that's a pretty good track record, very few shows have many successful actors coming out of it, I think most of them have/had a pretty decent career after both shows.

I also disagree with this.

SMG was in movies, such as "the Grudge" & "I Know What You Did Last Summer", plus "Ringer" and "The Crazy Ones."

David was in Bones, so that's obviously a big career boost.

Aly's in "American Pie" and "How I Met Your Mother".

Amber Benson has written books, directed and starred in her own film "Chance", and now she's in a new movie called "Bloodkiss" as well as being in a webseries adaption of "The Morganville Vampires".

ASH is (was. I'm not sure) in Game Of Thrones, and does stuff for the BBC.

Nick is on Criminal Minds on and off.

Michelle had a role in the recent TV movie "Killing Kennedy"

James has his band and such, as well as guest starring here and there.

The list goes on, so no, I don't think the cast weren't successful. Heck, I think they're one of the more successful casts out there today!

I think it's fairly uncommon to be able to land a long-running tv-show as the networks/industry/fans are rather fickle so I'm not terribly surprised that many of them haven't been on any lengthier shows (exception DB and AH whose shows may have been running a little bit too long instead)

And though he hasn't starred in a long-runner Marsters was on hits such as "Smallville" and (admittedly very briefly so perhaps it doesn't count) "Supernatural" and "Without a trace" and Anthony Head was on "Merlin" 🙂

I think it all depends on your definition of 'successful'.

The majority of the cast might not have gone on to have headlining roles in film and TV, but not all of them are deserving of headline roles in film and TV. Some of them just aren't strong enough to be a lead actor, so they stick to what they're good at - supporting and guest roles.

At the same time, I don't think any of them would say that they're not successful. The fact that they're working at all proves that they are successful. Just getting jobs in this business at all is hard enough, so the fact that pretty much every single main or majorly supporting actor in this verse has gone to other and better work after their stint in the verse finished shows that they are very successful.
