So yesterday they tried to blow up some nail bombs in London. That was thwarted. Today they wanted to blow up the airport terminal in Glasgow, but it's looking like they pretty much only succeeded in blowing out a couple of doors, and catching themselves on fire. One guy put himself out, and tried to run for it, but an angry Scotsman ran out of the terminal, and punched his lights out. :lmao: Hehe, that's funny.

Apparently these guys in the recent attack were of Asian decent. Am I a bigot for thinking that most likely means UK Pakistani?

Hmm, the Glasgow thing is debatable. It only happened a couple hours ago or so but there are so many different stories about what really happened.

The police just came out with a statement. They say they do believe it was an attempted terrorist attack, and they do believe it was connected to the thwarted attack yesterday in London.

Acccording to tonight's BBC news we're now on a high alert status with regard to terrorist attacks.

As for the Pakistani thing...yes, you're a total racist bigot...not! In this PC world it gets harder to describe people and whereas calling someone Pakistani could be thought of as racist in some quarters, everyone knows what you mean...but "of Asian origin" seems to be the description du jour to refer to someone from the Indian sub-continent...Blimey! the Beeb had to apologise for Iggy Pop talking about "Paki shops" recently. I wouldn't condone describing someone according to their perceived racial type but we all do it...even Mr "holier than thou" bloomin' Pointy 😉 In fact our law enforcement authorities in the UK have it down to a series of codes...IC1, IC2, IC3 etc..as in "Am now in pursuit of an IC1 (ie. Caucasian) male"

...marginally funny story regarding me saying something that might be taken as racist but was not intended as such...a few years ago where I work we used to deal with ships called something like "Purple Beach", "Silver Fox", "Red Sand" which came from South Africa. We were visited by some South African customs officers (a couple of black guys and a white guy)who came to see how we did things in the UK. They asked me if we had any traffic in our port from South Africa. "Yes", said I, "we get the coloured ships"...then I realised what I'd just said and burbled something about them all being named by colour...and I just kept on digging...how I wished that the ground would open up and swallow me 🙂

The terrorist attacks are horrible and I hate it honestly, and plus, what a magnificent week for new prime minister Gordon Brown heh? I got so pissed at the news today, cuz they were saying how America shouldn't be worried and bull crap like that! First off, I love Britain, I want to be British, lol, and I wish I loved there, so I feel strongly about it, and second off, us Americans are freaking Allies with the British, so Bush needs to get his monkey ass up there and stop all the terrorist attacks, I don't know if a lot of BBer's are in Britain, but to those that are, be careful, we don't want any of our friends getting hurt! 🙂

The airport thing just seemed....not very well thought out. Anyone can run a car into the front doors of an airport if they really, really wanted to. I just don't see it as something that would have gone "kablamo" and blown up the entire Glasgow airport.

Meanwhile does anyone know how long it takes to get through customs at a UK airport these days? Out of curiosity...seeing as I've got several months until my big quarter-life adventure.

Only a tiny bit related to DF's post....on one of the morning shows this morning, Australian prime minister John "Bonsai" Howard has apparently made a secret plan to pull our troops out of Iraq.

Secret eh? Obviously they're denying like there's no tomorrow.

Really? Hm, I doubt they will, not until bush gets his act together and does hats best for the U.S.

Yeah, I was reading one report that said an eyewitness saw the guys with "molotov cocktails". Pretty weak-assed terror plot by modern standards.

The London attempts seemed a little more sophisticated.

Thought this seemed a little fishy:

U.S. law enforcement officials received intelligence reports two weeks ago warning of a possible terror attack in Glasgow against "airport infrastructure or aircraft," a senior US law enforcement officials tells the Blotter on ABCNews.com.

The intelligence reports also warned that airports and aircraft in the Czech Republic could be the targets of al Qaeda-connected terrorists.

The warnings were kept secret for operational reasons, according to officials. In public, the White House and Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff have continued to maintain they know of no specific or credible threats involving the United States, even though the intelligence reports specify US aircraft as possible targets.

A US official told ABCNews.com that the intelligence reports led to the assignment of Federal Air Marshals to flights into and out of both Glasgow and Prague.

Air marshals had been added to flights into and out of Germany late last month, based on similar warnings.

Just saw on the news that an eye witness saw one of the guys punching cops and security crying out "Allah" while he was being subdued...it still doesn't seem well planned to me.

What? Reserve grade terrorists for Scotland? It just doesn't make sense to me and does seem a bit weak-assed.

Is my incredibly dumb assumption that the bigger Airport would be at Edinburgh and therefore possibly more of a target?

The plot thickens...and gets creepier. Guess these guys never heard of the Hippocratic Oath.

A suspected secret cell of foreign militants, believed to be linked to al-Qa'ida and using British hospitals as cover, are being questioned over the terrorist attacks in London and Glasgow.

Five of the eight people under arrest last night are said to be doctors. Another of those detained is the wife of one of the doctors, who is a medical assistant working for the NHS. The home of a sixth doctor is said to have been searched by police. Late last night an Australian television network reported that a suspect wanted in connection with the attacks had been arrested in Brisbane.

Attention has been focused on a group of nationals from the Middle East, who had not previously attracted the interest of security agencies.

Until now, cases of Islamist terrorism have involved mainly Muslims who were born and brought up in Britain. The alleged arrival of teams from abroad to carry out attacks, their identities unknown to the domestic law agencies, adds another dimension to the terrorist threat being faced in the United Kingdom.

Australian connection...

The Indian-trained doctor, a registrar at Gold Coast Hospital, is the eighth person held over the foiled terror plot to detonate car bombs in London and the attack using a flaming 4WD on Glasgow Airport.

Premier Peter Beattie revealed this morning a second doctor is also being questioned.

Following a search warrant executed on the Gold Coast Hospital at Southport he said another doctor had been questioned but he was not aware of any link between this man and the foiled terror plot in the UK.

"There is at this point no suggestion of anything in relation to the second doctor. We do not know of any link the second doctor may have had with anyone."

He said the arrested man and the man being interviewed were recruited in March 2006 from Liverpool, England, after advertisements ran in the British Journal of Medicine.

Earlier, he said the man had been detained by a counter-terrorism team comprising Queensland police and Australian Federal Police officers at the Brisbane International Airport attempting to leave Australia.

Two Arab doctors, both licensed to work in Britain, were among the other seven people arrested over the foiled terrorist attacks on London and Glasgow airport. Britain's Sky News reports that five of the eight people now being questioned over the terror attacks are trained doctors.

Doctors arrested over UK terror plot Australian Federal Police Commissioner Mick Keelty said the man had not been on any Australian terrorism watch lists.

Attorney-General Phillip Ruddock said no charges had been laid against the man who is an Australian resident but not an Australian citizen.

"The gentleman concerned is a registrar at the Gold Coast Hospital in Southport," Mr Ruddock said.

The man began work at the Gold Coast Hospital in Soutport on September 4 last year as a junior doctor supervised by senior staff.

He was rostered to general medicine and emergency.

Mr Beattie said the doctor was regarded by the hospital as a "model citizen".

The premier said he hoped overseas-recruited doctors working in Queensland hospitals would not be targeted as a result of the arrest.

"It's really important that everybody understands that while we have recruited overseas doctors, 99.9 per cent of them are good citizens who are working very hard," he said.

"I do not want to see in hospitals, overseas recruited doctors treated badly in some way."

The second doctor being questioned also came from Liverpool, Mr Beattie said.

Mr Beattie said there was no reason to believe there was any threat to patient safety at the hospital.

"Following his arrest on Monday night at 11 o'clock a number of warrants had been issued, including one at the Gold Coast Hospital."

Mr Ruddock said it was believed the man was seeking to leave Australia when he was arrested at the Brisbane International Airport, he did not have a return ticket.

He said the arrest did not affect Australia's terror alert level.

``There is no information to suggest that the terror alert at medium should be varied,'' Mr Ruddock said.

``What it means is while a terror attack could certainly be possible in Australia we have no specific information about any such planned action here.''

Australian Federal Police Commissioner Mike Keelty said Australian authorities acted on intelligence received from the UK police in making the arrest on Monday night.

"We've been working with the UK police since the bombings commenced, we've got a person attached to the counter terrorism command in London and the information for us to look at somethiig here in Australian came to us over the weekend.''

"At his stage there is no evidence or intelligence to suggest that we should be recommending to the Attorney-General that the threat level should change.

"Obviously we're acting on the information provided to us by the UK authorities, the matter is in hand, the person has been detained and search warrants have been executed. The issue for us now is to look at the material that has been obtained from the search warrant and decide what is the most appropriate course from then on.''

Gold Coast Hospital said its switchboard had gone into meltdown after the news broke. A spokesperson said there was concern emergency calls may not get through.

Premier Peter Beattie said there had been no increase to Australia's terrorism alert level.

He said the level would remain at medium.

"I want to reassure Queenslanders that there has been no change to the threat level which means that there is no threat, or no one knows of any threat in Queensland."

"The man is currently assisting police with their enquiries and no charges have been laid," he said.

Earlier, Brisbane Airport spokesman Jim Carden confirmed there was an arrest at 11pm yesterday.

"Yes there was an arrest last night but I will stress at no stage was there any threat to the Brisbane Airport," he said.

A police media spokeswoman said Police Commissioner Bob Atkinson would not be commenting on the arrest because it was under the jurisdiction of the Australian Federal Police.

"When we get some further details we might say something but at the moment he is not saying anything because it is an AFP (Australian Federal Police) job," she said.

British police had earlier confirmed an eighth man has been detained but would not say where the man was arrested.

British police said in a statement the man was arrested at an undisclosed location in connection with the investigation into the incidents in London and Glasgow.

"He remains in custody," British police said.

Yea...how does it go? "Do no harm" or something like that. Perhaps you get to swear a different version if you qualify at the Al-Qaeda medical school...

Good luck hon. Just make sure all your docs are in order and don't have anything vaguely suspicious in your luggage...you know the drill by now, I'm sure...Mrs P once got stopped at Amsterdam airport 'cos she had a hairbrush in her bag which had a handle that was a little bit knife-shaped. That was the trip when we only took carry on bags, as we were only there for a couple of days, so we could beat the luggage carousel queue...D'oh!

Im not taking any chances to be pinned and questioned. The only things im gonna take in my hand luggage is my laptop, phone, my passport, and my money...

I wont take a hairbrush...Im sure epo will understand why my hair is so messy.
