Landslide in PNG

On Saturday morning reports were listed about the landslide, in it 100 people were said to have died. Now that figure is up to 650 dead, there are thought to be 150 homes buried by the landslide with 4000 people homeless. And the death rate is liable to increase, possibly dramatically.

PNG is Papua New Guinea, it is just north of Australia.

That is horrible! I looked up a little coverage, but it doesn't say what precipitated the disaster. Excessive rain? Deforestation? Just random fate? The area sounds remote, so I hope aid can reach it quickly.
