Languages (learn/speak/understand...)

(I couldn't find a thread like this, delete it if I'm wrong.)

I would like to be able to understand all languages, mostly because I hate subtitles. When I started watching Buffy I watched it on TV, with Swedish subtitles... But soon I realized that the subtitles pretty much ruined everything. The amazing dialogue wasn't as cool and when I watched Buffy on my computer, because I just couldn't keep myself from reading the subtitles (which are totally useless).
And I would really like to be able to watch all movies without subtitles. (I know this is completely unrealic, but it's my dream.)

Anyways:

What languages do you speak and/or understand?

What languages do you find beautiful, and which would you like to learn and so on..?
 
I know what you mean about the subtitles, I watched Tokyo Godfathers a few weeks back and I was really annoyed at myself for not knowing Japanese since I felt like I was missing so much of the dialogue when just reading the subtitles.

The languages that I feel pretty confident speaking are Swedish and English. Then I speak some Danish and hopefully next year I will learn to speak Danish for real and not just the odd phrases. I also understand some Norweigan.

Then I got some basic French and Spanish, studied for a few years back in school, but can't say I can speak them and since I know some things in the other latin languages I understand some Italian, just a tiny bit. Same thing goes for German since Swedish and English are german languages.

I'd love to learn Japanese, Latin, French (for real), heiroglyphs (can't even spell in the languages I know), old English and Russian and perhaps some Chinese (don't know what's best to know mandarin or cantonese?). Oh and I'd love to be better with the spelling in the languages I know and that I'd have a greater vocabulary. I think languages are just like memory you can never get enough, always something new.

I'd love to learn all languages... I just so love to learn them... that's why I'm studying in this field I guess lol

So far I've studied English, German & Russian... I can understand much better than speak any of these but i still can speak, not fluently but you know, make myself understood.

I need to learn Spanish because it's the second most spoken language so I will need to be able to speak it... but for fun i'd love (had i time) to learn all the Nordish & East languages, such as Sweden, Island-ish (?), Finnish, Polish... etc. & Elvish too 🙂
 
Lol yea you should totally learn Swedish Frenchy 😀 (Or not 'cause it's pretty pointless unless you're planning on living here, which I'm guessing you're not, lol.)

The only language I am comfortable speaking, is Swedish. I wish I was comfortable speaking English, but I'm really not. I understand it pretty good though. Okay, I understand it good enough to watch movies and TV shows in English, but I can still be confused by some weird accents and words and such.

I have studied German too. But I can't speak it at all. I understand some, especially if I read it, but not nearly everything.
I thought I understood Norweigan and Danish (since those languages are pretty similar to Swedish), but I really don't (especially not Danish).

I'm no good at learning languages. My goal in life is to learn "perfect" English. That's it. But if I could, I would really like to understand (and preferably speak) Japanese, French and Spanish.
 
I did french at school. I got an A as well. I'm not so fluent anymore though. I can understand some of it but I'm way out of practice.
 
I defenitely wish I knew more languages.. Swedish is the only language I feel really comfortable speaking. I can talk and understand english but I always get nervous when I have to speak it. I can also understand but not talk norweigan and danish..

I studied french many years ago, and I really wish I remembered more, 'cause I really think that's a beautiful language. But almost all I can say now is the phone number that I had when I studied french, and some other things too but not many.

Russian is another language I really would like to speak, it's such an interesting language.
 
I'd love to speak lots of languages, I think world communication is very important.


My first language is english, However I do also speak french but still not as fluently as i would like - I'm a bit of a perfectionist. I adore the french language I think it's so beautiful, it's incredibly muscial and emphatic.

My written French really lets me down though....heavens i can't spell fabulously in English how am I mean to in French! :rolleyes2

I also have a weakness for the country itself, if I ever lived in a country other than England it would most definitely be France.

i studied German, didn't find it too bad but now I'm so out of practice...i wouldn't dare utter a word of German!

Er I speak a few Welsh words due to my heritage.

JollyApe - by old english what exactly do you mean? because I can read 'middle English' i believe is how it's put, 14th century English, the stuff of Chaucer. good times! 🙂

I am of Hispanic descent and therefore can speak, read and write Spanish quite fluently.
I also remember some Japanese from my high school days. Not enough to hold a convo, though.

My first language has always been English.

I have always wanted to learn Latin and French. There is a mystery and a romance to them that make them quite intriguing.
 
Wow, I can't believe so many people would like to learn French... make me proud to speak it somehow... I can give you all lessons, lmao

Nah you totally should Frenchy! Except it's really hard explaining pronunciation online, heh.
I met a kid who spoke French, and to me that was totally exotic, lol. I'm serious, it sounds so difficult (and I know the grammar is really hard), and beautiful.. I was all jealous and amazed by that little girl, lol. (Yeah, me, silly, I know.)
 
I'd love to speak Russian and Japanese. And maybe Arabic, actually, because everything said in Arabic sounds useful and lovely.

Scary languages to learn! I tried to read a basic "how to learn Arabic" book last week after someone left it in the classroom. It would probably be easier learning Martian! I've tried a little of Russian, which seems a little easier.
 
Oh wow. Uh, well, I did a year of Spanish in high school, which I don't think counts as studying it AT ALL. At my school you had to take a language, and all the kids who didn't want to do it took Spanish, so I was in there (in my senior year) with a bunch of freshman who didn't want to be there. Yeah, I didn't learn anything. My 3 years of high school French is a little better. I'm also currently studying French at the university level, which is so much better. I LOVE my French. Adore it. It's beautiful.

Also, I would love to speak Spanish (my boyfriend speaks it fluently, and so does my friend Miguel. They speak spanish to each other when they want to have secrets. It's so annoying.) Polish (another one Jim speaks fluently) French, better (I can read and understand it really well, it's the speaking and writing that's hard) German (I can swear in German, which is fun) Farsi, Greek, Italian, Hindi (I know a few words of Punjabi, thanks to my friend Maya, and Gurinder Chadra movies 😉 ) I would also love to learn Czech and Swedish and Russian. Also, Yankee (what the crap is pop?) and (real) English (as in from England), so I can understand all the weird slang terms I don't get. 😀 I love languages...in case you can't tell 😉
 
Sooo I gotta ask: What's up with everyone wanting to learn Russian? Am I the only one who thinks that Russia is scary and a bit weird and I don't wanna go there ever again..? (Um, no offence to anyone, really, it's just me, totally, lol..)
 
Hmm, I think I want to learn it really really quick and go there before they go all Stalin-ist scary again. not sayin' it's gonna happen, but it might! And I want to see the Kremlin and stuff, before I have to worry about getting shot. Plus I love the way Russian sounds and looks.
 
Like Anchovy, I just love how it sounds, and feels. Just totally alien to me. I had a Russian roomate a few years back, and although she had a horribly tendency to eat copious amounts of Brussel Sprouts, the accent and language is very cool. There's a kind of romance to it: like French, but more offbeat.
 
I can appreciate people choosing Arabic as an attractive and mysterious sounding language, but to me a lot of the spoken Arabic has always sounded as if they were hawking thick globs of phlegm from deep in the backs of their throat. Unless I am thinking about the wrong language. I'm not trying to be funny here, and it's nothing against the Arab peoples...but that's just how it sounds to me. 😛 Apologies to those who speak or like the Arab dialect.
 
I wouldn't have used the word Phlegm, but I know what you mean. 😀 A lot of work seems to go into the pronunciation. I think that's why I find it so fascinating. German is very clean, French just sort of flows, and English just sort of falls out of your head. But Arabic sounds totally different to any of those, it's almost like you need your whole upper body to speak it.
 
Yea okay, I sort of get the Russian thing, or not. But maybe I hear it a different way, being Swedish speaking and not English speaking (originally). Hm. I guess we have different ears in a way.
