At first I didn't like the the ending either (hated might be a better term), but given time to reflect on it, I now believe that it was a pretty good way for the show to go out. In a completely different way, it was just like the ending of Buffy. That little smile she had at the end, after Faith made the comment about living a normal life could very well have been a, "That's what YOU think. " sort sort of smile. Angel's, "Let's go to work." was exactly the same thing: the fight never stops. It never CAN stop. Evil can never be destroyed, it has to be met each day and defeated all over again. The ending of Angel could, and has, left the subject open for any number of conclusions, ranging from the three lone defenders going down bravely, overwhelmed by vastly greater odds like the defenders of the Alamo, to their either being able to somehow survive and escape to fight another day or being rescued by some outside force.
If anything, the continuation of Angel in a comic book form will probable seem just as somehow anti climactic as the ending of Buffy was at the beginning of Season 6 or Season 8: everything was all settled, maybe not to the satisfaction of all of the fans, but still there was some sort of settlement. Angel Season 6 will give me at least the same sort of mixed emotions.
I liked to imagine that there was some sort of miraculous rescue in the alley, followed by Angel going to look up Nina, Spike going to Rome, kicking the Immortal's ass, and being reunited with Buffy, perhaps after receiving the Shanshu, which he obviously deserved much more than Angel, and Illyria striking up a mutually satisfying relationship with a handsome and loving houseplant somewhere. Maybe we could toss in a Connor meets Dawn episode with an Andrew meets Timothy Dalton side plot, and we could have a nice fade to black accompanied by an, "And They All Lived Happily Ever After" caption. That would be my conclusion to the whole epic tale.
Whedon, once more, has done it to us again: hooked us on the thrilling exploits of the Scoobie Gang and their two ensouled vampire sidekicks.
When does Episode 4 of Buffy come out, anyhow? I need my Buffyverse fix.
