Latin Lettering on part 1 disc 1 spine???

I'm not sure where else on the board to post this.

I was just taking some discs out of their dvd cases to take away with me, and I noticed something peculiar. Season 5 Disc 1 has Latin Letters on the spine in place of the usual English letters. Is this something others have come across? The rest of the sleeve is in English, and the other two disc covers are all in english.

The letters you should see on the side are (other two disc spines in brackets):

SE (ASON)
F (IVE)

(PART I)

COL (LECTORS)
E (DITION)

But instead it has:

ΣE (ASON)
Φ (IVE)

(PART I)

XOΛ (LECTORS)
E (DITION)

The letters in question are Greek, not Latin. The alphabet we use in English is actually Latin letters. The Greek letters you quote are actually direct equivalents of the letters they replace. I'm not sure why this was done but I'm sure one of our extremely knowledgeable members will be along with an answer soon 🙂

Where's n4h when you need him?! And also, it's cool how you came across that. I don't think we have that in the US, but seeing as how I don't have the set of season 5 yet I wouldn't be able to verify.

Just out of interest...plus I had some slack time at work 🙂...I did a little research on the Greek alphabet to see how much of what I remembered was correct...and it mostly was 😉

Σ = sigma = S in English
E = epsilon = E...odd that 😉...kind of a short "e" sound, as in "letter"
Φ = phi = PH or F
O = omicron = O (as in "pot")
Λ = lambda = L
Χ = chi = CH (as in the Scots "loch"). If they were being strictly accurate, rather than having a laugh or messing about or whatever they were doing, it probably should've been K = kappa = the hard C sound (as in "call").

I really wish I'd studied linguistics and language instead of business...I find it far more interesting.

edit - after a little more slack time I googled around to see if I could find anything about Greek letters on Buffy DVDs and couldn't find anything. However, it's not the only incident of Greek transliteration in Buffy...in the S7 ep Get It Done -

When we see Dawn saying that the book she reads isn't in Sumerian anymore and changes to English, the writing beforehand wasn't Sumerian at all, it was a transliteration of Greek letters in the place of Latin letters in English. For example the word "see" in English in the book was witten as "ΣΕΕ" in the Greek letters

I too have googled everything I can think of, and every cover I see on the net shows regular english writing on the spine.

Yeah, we don't have that on the American region set. I guess we're just not that cool, huh? 🙂
 
The strange thing is, I have a friend with the set, and she doesn't have the same one I do. Hers is written in English.

Why is mine different? Who should I ask? I was thinking about emailing the distributors (20th Century Fox Australia) or perhaps Joss Whedon Himself? :lmao:
 
I was wondering if it's just a result of some kind of typo/software cock-up at the DVD sleeve printers, rather than having any particular significance.

When I was posting above with all the Greek letters, if I didn't get it exactly right (font, size and so on) between Windows Character Map (from which I copied them), Word (where I was dumping stuff prior to posting it in a coherent form) and BB itself, it was pretty much a lottery as to whether the letters I pasted came out Greek or English. It's not beyond the bounds of possibility that the typesetter had selected the wrong font or copied/pasted the lettering from elsewhere and had his mind on other things than proof reading 🙂
