Law Heirarchy Question

Hey.

Im working on a new script and I need a question answered. Correct me if I'm wrong but this is a very minimal heirarchy (which is all I need anyway).

Lawyer>District Attorney>General Attorney

But to move up between the ranks do you need to study, train etc for it or can you just be a lawyer for say 10 years then try and get a job as a D.A. or what?

Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the DA of any particular juristiction an elected position? The Assistant DA's are the ones who prosecute most of the cases (and can be hired and fired), and the DA is the one who decides on administrative stuff, like which cases to pursue, what sentences to try for etc. For sure, the Attorney General is a political appointee, in charge of ALL the elected DA's. I could be wrong, being as I'm not an American...
