I don't know if this is the place or if anyone already posted it, but here it goes:

I'm reading Led Zeppelin: When Giants Walked the Earth by Mick Wall, and BtVS is mentioned: Wall says that the ocultist Aleister Crowley is "named-cheked" in one of the episodes (I don't remember this, but the occult is not really my cup of tea) and that Buffy was named after "other occult notable, Montague Summers".

I don't believe that. I think she was named Summers because it was LA, sun and fun and its a very California feeling name.

Yeah, I always thought that, "Summers" also in contrast with the darkness she has to fight.

Maybe Wall is reading too much into it; he himself speaks about the hardcore evangelicals that saw in Led Zeppelin's lyrics the evil incarnated - although Jimmy Page really is into the occult. Thank God it isn't Plant, because I loved him in my teens years...

I would beware of reading too many things into names. When Sharon Stone was cast as Catherine Tramell for "Basic Instinct", on her first meeting with Joe Esterhas (the screenwriter, one of the most successful in Hollywood), she told Joe, "Catherine's last name. I researched it. I know what it means... A tramell is a funeral shroud in Scottish mythology. Isn't that brilliant?"

Joe replied, "I didn't know that. I like to name my characters after baseball players. Alan Tramell of the Tigers is one of my favourites."

I wonder how much literary scholarship is riddled with misunderstandings like that.
