Legalize Marijuana?

Ok, son of a police officer here, so you can guess what my view is. Nope. Shouldn't be legal. Remember the thread on smoking? Where the hell are you gonna be able to smoke it anyway? (Ok, just kidding, but do you see the inherent irony of the situation?). Besides, on the more practical side, how do you test for marajuana impairment in a car driver? You can't get a blood test without a warrant. What's the level for impairment? Hell, that crap floats around in your tissue for months. (Delta THC, the active ingredient, is stored in the fat cells of the body, primarily around the liver, if I'm not mistaken. It can be present in the blood weeks, and even months after the actual ingestion). Is anyone willing to allow "the State" to take a blood sample at the roadside to test for impairment? Without a warrant? That's the only way they have at this time to test for THC. That's just another aspect to consider before you answer.

Good points...never thought of that. It's such a shame how there are people out there who are willing to endanger their lives and the lives of others by getting into a car while intoxicated. It really sickens me.

Although I would like to see marijuana legalized because I think it would cut down on a lot of the crime associated with the distribution of it (i.e. Traffic), it's too hard to regulate.

That's a good point too. And once you legalize it, "grow ops" are automatically legit. They're a big problem around here. The gangs (yup, run by bikers or in Toronto by Triads) buy a house in a suburban, usually upscale neighbourhood. They bypass the electrical meter, and run hundreds of amps of power into grow lamps and humidifiers. They grow hundreds of thousands of dollars of pot, then if they're not caught, they abandon the house. The house is uninhabitable, and structurally it is compromised due to humidity and rot. So, it becomes an abandoned, unsellable fire hazard, which we, as citizens, end up paying to be either fixed or torn down. Legalize pot, and this will be business as usual...hell, it already is, but then it'll be legal. Maybe it would be cultivated like tobacco eventually, but all the grow ops now existing would be given a pass. We can't afford that.

Hm, I gotta answer no to this question. The only good thing would be the crime thing you mentioned Cordelia, I agree about that but... Still. It's like that with lots of things and.. I don't know if it's better to make more things legal. And I know people say that those who want it can still get it whether it's legal or not.. But I still think it would be more common if it was legal. I mean at least when it's illegal it gets a little bit more "serious" and well.. some people might take that as a reason not to do it. (Um, I wouldn't be surprised if you don't understand a word of what I'm saying cause I'm not so sure myself what I'm trying to say, lol...)

i think it should be legal. KillerDwarf stated some great reasons why.

if it was Legal they can controll it. just because its illegal it dosent mean it dosent happen. if you legalise it you can put a legal limit on (which has been suggested in this country even tho its illegal) even if it hasnt been suggested you can inform the public how much would be safe to drive with etc.

also if you can buy it in a shop you wouldnt need to get it from some dodgy character in a park

the fact is, its here, it happens, stop ignoring it and pretending it dosent happen, alcohol and tabbaco are alot worse.

no im not saying "worse things are legal so add it"

im saying if you admit its here you can do somthing about it

I have to admit that i sit on the fence a little on issues such as this.

On one hand i'm a firm believer that, as long as you do it in the privacy of your own home and you aren't hurting anyone else, you should be entitled to do whatever you want to do, be that generally smoking, drinking, marijuana or anything else.

Thing is that too many people don't limit it to their own homes and have no consideration for the health or safety of others. I don't do any kind of drugs myself, don't even smoke, never have, but i know if i did it wouldn't be in public and i wouldn't allow myself to endanger others.

I do drink and sometimes way too much for my own good but i would never dream of driving afterwards. Of course it helps that i don't actually drive anyway and never will (can't complain about all the pollution from cars on the road if i'm adding to it myself can i! 😉 ) but that is besides the point.

Now the point about making softer drugs legal to cut down on drug related crime is an excellent one, i had to stop three kids who had broken into my home only a couple of years ago which i have no doubt was to get a little money for drugs. Making drugs like marijuana legal would lessen those kind of related problems.

For me though i don't think it would be effective longterm. If you make soft drugs legal more people are likely to try them which would inevitably lead to more people moving on to the harder stuff and the circle would begin again. Do we then make cocaine legal to bring down the crime figures again?

I wish the world was a place where people could be trusted to use their own common sense in these matters but there are far too many people out there who just don't care enough about the rest of the population of the world.

yeah there's always that potential to open up other "gateways" good argument.

I agree... I mean where does it stop... It would be the same with harder stuff, which would be far worse. And as you said:

Which means it could be really bad... Not that I really agree that everyone should be allowed to do anything as long as it doesn't hurt anyone except themselves.. but still, agree with the hurting of other people.. it could also be things like dragging them into those things, drugs and all..

I say not less drugs but more drugs used in the right way. Imagin if there was a little bit of heroin in milk, bread, sports drinks, pasta, ground beef, deodorant, fabric softener, tooth past and all sorts of other products. No one would be addicted and everyone could walk around with a kinda perma buzz. Let the Government controal it like they do fat content and people can go about there lives.

That beeing said I dont smoke, drink or use any kind of illegal or legal druges. Yes, that meens asprin and cough syrup. Drugs are for people who dont have any respect for there own lives.

i say no. and then no again. i'd like to second everything pagan said basically (so i won't be repeating it because i completely agree). and only to say that i used to be a smoker. never a heavy one but one nonetheless and until this very day i end up having a smoke per month or something like that due to stress mostly. and every time it's harmful for me and the people around me. so drugs? no friggin way.

I'm for (controlled) leagalization. Most not-too addictive substances should be legal. In most of the cases it isn't more harmful than alcohol anyway.

The car thing isn't an issue since i'm against cars; all they do is pollute.

but that'e exactly it. you *can't* control something like that, you most certainly can't control something addicting. and eitherway, you allow one thing and suddenly they want everything and there is no going back.
also you can hardly compare drugs to alcohol.

lmao. right. well i've been talking to quite a few people who have been there and i'll tell you this - things got out of control. not surprisingly, these people donb't evenknow each other but they all don't ever want to go back there *because* of the drugs that have become a part of everyday life over there.

Weird. None of the people i know that has been there had that reaction 😵,

They were americans, right? Must have been a cultural collision or something? To come from an authoritarian country like the US to a liberal one like nl.

hehe go eudial. :) i quite agree with ya on all, hehe auth us to lib nl...hehe...you're right tho.
not in the least. they were from allover the world, from netherlands as well. and please remember that liberal is not always good. i sure as hell wouldn't want to raise my kids in that country.

I don't really think it would be more dangerous raising your kid in nl than in the US or many other countries (when we're speaking of drugs), since there are still a problem like everywhere.. But I agree that liberal isn't at all always good... And I don't think [more] drugs should be legal.. but...

oh i'm perfectly aware of there being a problem everywhere, don't get me wrong. but i think it's better to be in a country where it's at least against the law and enforced.

But do you think it works like that? In the US, do you think there are less people doing drugs..? Does it work, the against-the-law thing..? (I'm not saying it doesn't, I don't know, never even been to that country, but...)
