Ok lets figuer this one out...

Buffy was how old when she graduated (1999)?
So how much time had passed before going to collage?
Then she is there her freshmen year and drinking beer?
What is the legal drinking age in CA at the time?

Some questions with Willow.

Was the drinking age 18 then?

I'll have a go at this...

Buffy was 18 when she graduated, right and my understanding was she went right to college after graduating. So she was 19 when she started as a freshman. The legal drinking age is 21. But, big surprise, college kids drink before legal age all the time 😉

Buffy was 18 when she graduated from Sunnydale High School, given that she was born in 1981. As far as I know, only about 3 or 4 months had passed when they had their first day of college. The legal drinking age of EVERY state in the country is, by goverment law, 21.

So, yes, Buffy was drinking underage.

As for Willow, I don't think her birthday is ever brought up, but I assume that she was the same age as Buffy

It's not unheard of for college bars, (I mean bars located on or near a college campus) to serve to minors. I'm not condoning it!

Also, I imagine that in "Beer Bad," the guys were 21 and had ordered pitchers, making it easy for Buffy to partake. Ironically Xander could have stopped her since he was the bartender at that particular bar, (you only need to be 18 to tend bar).

I think when Willow drinks in "Something Blue," it's one of those instances where there isn't much carding going on that night. Hey, maybe between Doppelgangland and Something Blue, the Bronze became a lot more liberal with the law in order to pay for the countless repairs it no doubt needed after quite a few run- ins with vampires and slayers. 😉

Also note all of them exept Dawn was drinking at the Bronze in Family (Tara had just turned 20)

Don't want to burst the bubble here but, I dare say binge drinking would have taken on a different meaning, due to no alcoholic drinks being served on set.
As for the Beer Bad thing, chances are there was some serious liquid retention issues on set.

Haha in Family aren't they all like 20? And Dawn has to get a stamp on her hand so that they know not to serve her...but the rest of them are allowed to drink. I never really thought about this when I first started watching Buffy. I was like 9 or 10 and I guess I just assumed that they were all "of age".

Actually, in many states (California included) you have to be 21 to tend bar. Which is why he had the fake ID at the start of the episode. Remember the mustache? 😀

Sorry, just had to nit-pick a little. 😱 🙂

Huh, I never realized that. Where I live, it's 18. It certainly makes more sense though for the drinking age and serving age to be the same!

Ah, forgot about the "disguise" lol. Yeah that would make sense if CA's age minimum for serving is 21.

Anyway, the fact is still that it's fairly easy for underage college students to drink at bars, particularly those on or near a college campus.

Buffy is definitely 20 as of "Family."

The drinking in "Beer Bad" is easily explained by it being a sketchy bar that doesn't card (also, remember, the owner wanted the guys to drink the beer because of its special properties). Later, Willow could easily have snuck her beer in (it is under her coat after all).

"Family" is hard to explain, though. Maybe the writers forgot how old they were.

And every ep with a party or evey shot of the Bronze, Lot of convenant forgeting the characters age 😀 I meen we all know the actors/actresses are of age but there characters wrent

Im not trying to make somekind of statement about underaged drinking far be it for me to care when someone drinks thats between themselfs I just found it funny such a long accuring slip up happened its like all the writers, staff and actresses and actors just said ok we blew up high school we are all adults now after what? 4 weeks after the last shot on S3?
