let's talk about spoilers

Has anyone ever read a spoiler that ruined it for you? Anyone want to share a story?

I know, not the most interesting topic, but it's slow here today and I'm curious.

I've had spoilers ruin the outcome of important sports games for me before. It sucks when you do your best to avoid all television and people only to have a careless word slip out of a friend's or stranger's mouth!

Usually, when I read a Spoiler it is my own fault, cause I get too curious and can't help myself but look. I'm usually not too mad about it, it usually soften the shock 😛 And gives me time to get use to an idea (I often get overly invested in shows you see). I do find it is better when I don't know spoilers though.

There's only a few show where I dodge spoilers like the plague, those being Game of Thrones (too good to spoil) and OITNB (cause let's face it, I binge watch the whole thing on the first day). The problem is that I do like binge watching, so I always wait for the whole season to be out before watching, but by then I'll have usually encountered a few spoilers along the road.

If I do get spoiled I'm usually pretty good at forgetting that spoiler by the time I've got to watching it.

Two come to mind. I still haven't seen the last ever episode of Sopranos and someone was talking about it in class and gave it away. Guess he just assumed everyone who likes the show would have seen it by now. I didn't mind too much.

And the last season of the Good Wife (S5) I remember I was catching up online and was talking about it with my Mum and she said that something dramatic happened in an episode that week. So that peaked my interest but then when I was going through the episodes online and it gives you the write up I saw what she was talking about in the write up to the next episode😱 I don't think they should do that incase the person in question hasn't seen the previous episode. I won't give it away for those who have not seen that season but its the development involving Will.

I'm with Blaze spoilers don't really bother me and it's usually my fault. Especially with horror movies or suspensee.i can't handle it so knowing the outcome takes the edge off and i can just relax and watch. Or it tells me if something is worth watching Or not.i can't really think of ash i instance where it has ruined something for me. It's all about the story that's bring told and how it gets there.

I thought of you the other day.. I was reading how Netflix's new show Between (or something like that) they are testing it out in weekly installments. They are saying they might do that with OITNB as well. If those two shows do well they may continue that approach moving forward.

Spoilers have never bothered me. In fact, I search for them whenever possible.

Just about the worst example of a spoiler that I can remember concerns the third movie in Stallone's "Expendables" franchise. The movie, IN ITS ENTIRETY, in H D quality, was leaked onto the internet a full two weeks prior to theatrical release. That's got to be the biggest spoiler in spoiler history, much worse than just knowing that Spike was going to return in Season 5 of "Angel" weeks before "Chosen" aired.

I have such bad luck with this since I'm always finding out twists even though I go out of my way to avoid them.

'The Sixth Sense' was the big one for me, somebody just went and blurted out the 'twist' whilst discussing the movie with a friend of mine even though they knew I hadn't seen it.

Also I knew that 'Scream' had two killers going into the theatre- that didn't exactly ruin the film though.

I don't mind being spoiled usually. If I do mind, then I'll avoid Facebook pages, wikis ect. until I'm caught up. I watch a lot of stuff far later on DVD, so if everyone waited for me to catch up, they'd hardly get to discuss anything.
A couple of times I've unfollowed FB pages for US shows to avoid spoilers, but generally I don't mind, 90% of the time I see it as something to look forward to.
Same with comics really, especially if I'm just buying volumes instead of each issue. I've never really minded, but I know what to avoid if ever I do.

I'll sometimes avoid spoilers for a season finale, but not always.

EDIT: Oh one that does annoy me though. A few books I've been reading, people have known full well that I'm only part way through and they've spoiled the ending. That's a dick move.

But don't you think it depends on the kind film or show you are watching? If its something where everything else in the film is leading up to the end or where there is a big twist such as a thriller or a horror then I think it does matter if you know before hand the twist. For me it would just take me out of the film because I know I what's coming and just make the film a bit cold to me. But if its something where the ending doesn't matter that much like a comedy for example then I don't think knowing the ending would matter as much.

I remember in high school when they would show a movie or anything they would always break it off into two halves- the second half the first day and first half the second day.. the thinking was that if you never got around to watching it on day two, at least you would know how it ended. It seemed rather bassackwards logic to me at the time..but as such the concept of spoilers 'ruining' the movie doesnt really affect me.

Usually I don't mind spoilers, there's only two shows that I'll actively avoid spoilers for. I won't read articles, I'll avoid tumblr, twitter, LJ, Facebook, anything, until after I've seen the episode, and if I do see anything, it'll be because someone was a brat and posted something on tumblr from an article they read or something someone said before the ep has aired or the season even started and haven't tagged it right.

Otherwise, I don't really care. I'm not hugely invested, I knew certain things about the Avengers before I saw it and I wasn't particularly bothered. I can't really tell you why I NEED to avoid spoilers for those shows, just something in me that makes me want to experience it for real in my own way.

I used to love getting spoilers and telling them to people who hated spoilers (In fact, I needed to teach myself how to hold back and NOT give spoilers) - until I watched Tru Calling and got spoiled that

RDJ's character was introduced later.
Billy (played by Gil Bellows) was Ally's childhood sweetheart and they had the whole "will they/won't they" thing going up until late season 3 where he dies of a brain aneurysm.
