Liam's sister

Don't know if this was ever posted before, but has anyone ever wondered what was Liam's relationship with his sister like? If you watch the flashback in "The Prodigal" it seems to me like he was close to her. He never says anything to his mom, but bids goodbye to Kathy promises that they will see each other again (saddens me every time I watch that scene considering what's in store for Kathy). It seems to me that she was the only family member he was closest to.

Why haven't Whedon's co. explored her character on the show or his relationship to her? Was it time constraints, lack of a good script or something? I would have loved some background information about her. Has anybody asked Whedon questions about her during any of the comic cons? Are there any canon background facts about her in the comics?

I was surprised that he didn't sire Kathy considering that they were close. Don't vampires usually sire people that they were closest to when they were human (Alana and Gunn, William and his mom....just to name a few).

I always thought his sister is the reason why Angel kept his name despite all the horrors he commited as Angelus. His sister thought he was an angel back from the dead so, as a way of honouring her memory he became that.

I was surprised that he didn't sire Kathy considering that they were close. Don't vampires usually sire people that they were closest to when they were human (Alana and Gunn, William and his mom....just to name a few).

Actually its unusual. Most vampires tend to kill their family first (Penn for example didn't nothing else but recreate that first kill). as a way of severing their 'weak' human ties. William/Spike and Alana obviously felt very close to their loved ones to want to make them immortal.

Liam's loved his sister. She might have been the only member of his family that he actually did love. She was the one who let Angelus into their house. Those are just about the only facts that we have about her, other than her name. It seems to be a common theme in general vampire lore that vampires, immediately upon rising, try to seek out their families, friends, or loved ones to be their first victims. Whether it is because of that, or just because Angelus wanted to destroy all of his human earthly ties, we're never actually told. Maybe he was just seeking to extract some sort of diabolical revenge on his father by killing his wife and daughter before killing him, we are never told. We do know that Angelus was among the most cruel and vicious of all vampires

Personally, I much prefer that we not know a whole lot of the details of that particular event, or even get to know that little girl any more than we have done in exactly the same way, and for the same reason, that I am content to know that Darla and the others seemed to see the blood of babies as a delicacy, without actually seeing them feed.

I for one I'm surprised that Angel never mentions her or talks about her on either the BTVS series or Ats. When I re watch the "War Zone" episode, I'm left wondering why the writers never use the opportunity to give Angel the chance to talk about him killing his own sister to give Gunn a little perspective. He is able to talk about Drusilla but not about his sister? Wondering if it's just painful for him to talk about her or remember her....

Killing your family, however you felt about them, is deeply, deeply shameful. After Angel got his soul back and realized what he'd done, it's not surprising that he never wanted to talk about Kathy. He is responsible for ending her life, I think the last thing Angel would want to do would be to talk about her and tell his friends what happened to her. Angel is very wary about revealing his past because he knows it would make people look at him differently. Which they would do, whether they mean to or not, because that's just human nature. I don't think he'd want to risk the pitying looks he'd get if he told people what he - as Angelus - did.

I think the writers and Joss came to believe that Angel's past isn't what's important or interesting when it comes to the character, and I tend to agree. The interesting thing about Angel is how he deals with his soul and trying to make amends. Liam was a drunk, one who loved his sister, yes, but he was still not a nice person and hated his family. Angelus was a monster, the worst vampire in history, yes, but that's been done a hundred times in the show and comics. In my opinion, going back and writing a story about Kathy and Liam doesn't really do anything for me. It won't change how I look at Angel as a character, because he's not Liam anymore.
