I don’t, but I should.

The primary reason I don’t is just a need for ownership. I buy books and often read them when I find the time or interest. Having due dates is too difficult for that.

I understand that feeling, I only get short books from the library, I know that I can always extend my loan, or even return it and borrow it another time if I don't feel like I'll read it in time. If I enjoy the book I'll often buy it anyway.

It's a good way to try out different books.
 
My library is great, lots of computers and books. I don't use it much though because I like to buy books on Amazon so I can keep them.
 
More books on your own shelf = more dusting for you!

I only keep books that I re-read a lot, which is a whole bunch of horse books. Lots of horse training books that I cant get in any library. Its been so interesting to watch how fast trends change in training, when the actual basics havent changed in thousands of years.

Two weeks is plenty of time for me to finish a borrowed book if I am into it. That is one of the most useful things about a library/borrow box. If I havent finished it in two weeks, then I am probably not all that into it and it becomes a force read instead of a fun read. When I own a book, or even from the street library, that I like a lot, I slow it down too much because there is no rush and dont finish it that way!
 
Its rare that I buy brand new books, if I do buy books its normally from a charity shop. If I want something specific I'll look on World of Books as they usually have it, so still cheaper than buying new.

I've bought 2 books this year, Anna Karenina because we're doing a very long group read, so I bought a pretty edition to encourage me to stick with it. The only other one I bought was The Time Shelter which is a new book, and one I'll probably pass around for others to read once I've finished it. Both bought from actual books shops, but I'm lucky in that we have a great bookshop here that will order you the book you want if they don't have it. Obviously they don't have any deals like the big companies do, but they do get lots of signed editions of new books, and new authors in to do talks.
 
I love my local library and use it a lot. Though I do miss the times when the library was a quiet place, now there’s just a ”quiet room”. But I also suppose it is nice that there is a free place where kids and teens can hang out a bit, even if they are loud.

You think noisy kids and teenagers are bad, they have corporate events and weddings in the middle of mine

I could happily live in a place like the second photo.
@NotASlayer people don't live inside it, just in their little homeless camps all outside and on the steps, etc. Makes getting in fun though!

Pretty! Mine looks like the bottom pic, but minus the fairy lights with better carpet.

The 5th-6th floor rooms, now that’s what I’m talking about! That looks so atmospheric!

Multiple floor library is in itself quite the luxury! I’d go visit for sure

Wow, that is really interesting article. Thanks for sharing this! I find anything about Gen Z interesting though because this is the age group I will be teaching.

Years back when I was working as a job coach to teens. I remember having a discussion with one of my clients about reading. He said he enjoyed reading, but couldn't "afford to buy books off Amazon". I asked him if he had a library card. He said he didn't know "libraries still existed!" LMAO

I think it's fantastic that Gen Z is discovering libraries, even if they're just socializing in them, and role playing or whatever, and not really using the resources.

Not really related to libraries but I read the above and I'm reminded when the 100th anniversary of the Titanic sinking happened, a bunch of people emerged, commenting that they thought it was "just a movie" and had no idea it was an actual real-life event.

Our local council spent over 20m to rebuild the library and sports hall which share the same building and it looks really nice and new. But they didn’t seem to spend anything on the actual books so it is still the same limited collection of old ones inside.
Even if they had allocated 0.1% of the cost of the rebuild to books it would have made a massive difference.

But I do need to check out what ebooks they have at the library.
When I used to borrow physical books years ago I used to hate those unidentifiable stains you would get on the pages ! How hard is it not to spill stuff on a book !! At least with ebooks I wont have to worry about that

When I was a kid I used to hate how you would have to bring pay items like CD's and DVD's to the counter 15 minutes before closing so the librarians had time to cash up and leave the second the library closed.
There were about 10 librarians working there on shifts so if they cashed up on a rota would it really have killed them to stay an extra 5 or 10 minutes once every couple of weeks

My library system did the same thing! Passed a levy to remodel branches, but forgot to put in money to maintain the collection. We're not visiting to look at the pretty architecture!
 
The local library is having a book sale this summer, but nothing catching my eye so far.

They're also doing the annual summer book read for kids, usual thing to encourage kids to read during the school holidays.
 
The local city library is on the move, currently in a temporary place until wherever its going is done up ready.

They've installed a coffee machine in my local one now, but I've never seen anyone use it, and put games like chess and dominoes on the tables. I guess during the winter people might use them, just as a way of keeping warm inside.
