Libraries

Went to the library today, dropped off two books, took out another 2, and put in a request for another that's at a different library in the county. Which will hopefully be available to pick up on Monday.

Not that I'll have time to read it, as I took out the 1st Cresent City book, again. I've borrowed it before but not read it, I think the size of it puts me off starting it.

its got a lot of words but doesnt say much, I didnt finish it before it was due back!
Our local library is pretty great. I take my kids there for story time and craft nights and my husband utilizes their digital audiobook collection since he drives all day for work.

Even though our library is underfunded they also have resources there to help people build resumes, financial planning courses, and more all free of charge.
 
@November I doubt I'll even start it before it's due back! I want to read it because apparently it ties into ACOTAR but why is it so long! Maybe I just need to read the AI short version!

The language did my head in. Fairies are much simpler! If she didnt use so many words, it'd be a better read. I wouldnt buy it, but I'd read it if i didnt have the time pressure of a library return. Thats why I am enjoying Throne of Glass so much - just a chapter at a time, easy and super enjoyable (so far).
 
I posted my overdue books through the letterbox this morning instead of handing them over. I hadn't read any of them, I think I need to go back to easy light books. So maybe I'll reread the last Thursday Murder one before the new one comes out next week.
 
I used the local library to get a few DVD's, but they needed repairing. Would the library allow a book with stained unreadable pages to go out, as far as I'm concerned those people who work in that library ought to find another job.
 
Requested the 2nd in the Richard Coles murder series. Easy reading now I've figured out when it's set.

It's just become a tv series, so I'm surprised that not one in the series is available, but it'll be in by the end of the week. I've not yet finished the first book, but only a few chapters to go.

They don't know the DVDS don't work if no one tells them, so I hope you did! I think a lot of people are worried they will get charged for a bad DVD and so return it without saying anything. But I've never had the library do this.

I've had two large books in a row from the library: Seven Eves by Neal Stephenson and Katabasis by R.F. Kuang. I'm ordering a few little ones now - one is only 66 pages!
 
One of the problems Stake fodder is that many libraries here have a returns "letter box" for people to put the returns in. It is a stupid notion as the human contact is removed, problems can be easily forgotten about.

Good point. I have sometimes put a sticky note on DVDs that weren't working, if I didn't think I would be able to talk to someone.

Libraries have been on the forefront of preserving freedom of speech rights but sadly, a lot of their influence has waned because students can look things up online now. When I was in school (and the pterodactyls plied the skies), any kind of research started at a library. The erosion of freedom of speech is obvious and should be opposed by everyone. After all, Buffy has been characterized by some evangelicals as "witchcraft" and if they were to ever return to a position of power, this board would be shut off.
 
I rarely look at the non fiction books, but if I do it's gardening or cookbooks. Here, at least, the majority of the library is fiction books, maybe a third non fiction.

It does change every so often to keep up with trends. Where the dvds were it's now YA books.

Are all the Dvds gone, or they just moved them?
 
The library website annoys me, it doesn't keep you logged in.

I have put several books on order though, as I want to try reading more prize winners and nominated books this year. I don't usually pay attention to who's won what, but as I want to do more new reads than reread, I think that's a good place to start.
 
I reserved too many books, they keep coming in before I've read anything!

But also, do you find that libraries have loads of books from a handful of authors? I do wish they had a bigger variety of authors, rather than a whole shelf of the same person.

It's probably the most popular authors who are usually in the book charts, because they are the authors that get promoted, so those are the ones people always want to read.
