Life Serial: When Good Episodes Go BAD!

There was a thread at Whedonesque recently discussing the worst episodes of Buffy and whilst there were many obvious suggestions that came up again and again (Doublemeat Palace, Go Fish, Teacher's Pet and so on) it seemed like the only episode that I felt was truly bad went unmentioned (except by me anyway, hehe).

Life Serial, in my opinion, was a mess. What makes it worse is that it was written by two of the best writers at Mutant Enemy, David Fury and Jane Espenson. It was disjointed, flowed very badly and the dialogue and acting in certain scenes were quite frankly poor. There was a certain conversation between Buffy and Anya during the Magic Box scene that felt like it had been meant as a rehearsal rather than what was meant to end up within the episode itself.

ANYA: Where are you going?

BUFFY: Lady needs a mummy hand.

ANYA: What? You haven't even talked to her yet.

BUFFY: I could explain, but you would just forget it.

ANYA: I'm worried about you. Um, retail is a, is a fast-paced and exciting world. I mean, this whole day, has it gone by too quickly for you?

BUFFY: No. No, I don't think that's exactly the problem.

Emma's delivery of her lines were incredibly forced and unnatural. It was like the irony of her statement was being forced down the viewer's throat in case they missed the joke. Something that Whedon shows are very rarely guilty of.

I do get that the episode was about how unfocused Buffy was and that it was intentional to try and create the sort of jumpy, discontinuous feeling that they were going for to try and get across how lost Buffy was but I tend to think that they may have succeeded a little too well.

Then there was the intense lack of logic in two of the tests. The evil lint thing probably being the worst. What exactly was it doing to Buffy? Slowing her down? removing her from normal time? Either way there was one point where Buffy would have frozen or disappeared right in front of Tara's eyes and all Tara did was walk away as if nothing had happened.

The mummy hand lack of logic is slightly less annoying but given that we can assume that several hours passed at least in the real world whilst the loop was going on then it begs the question of why no other customers attempted to get in to the shop in all that time and why nobody on the outside noticed a problem.

Basically I thought that this episode was beyond poor the first time I watched it and my opinion hasn't improved in later viewings so it amazes me that more people don't mention this one when talking about the less brilliant episodes of Buffy.

Anyone else agree?

i agree with the lint thing; it bugged me that tara wouldnt have noticed that buffy was just standing there, and simply walked away. however, i did like this episode. maybe there isnt a reason except i enjoyed it; it made me laugh.

I think the biggest agreement you will get is with the 'Lint'.
Personally, the Mummy Hand I quite liked that, more so for its reference to shows that I not only watch, but episodes I liked and remembered instantly.
I really got bored with the Work Site scene. Xander's reaction was pretty irritating, what with the 'This is my work, we don't have monsters'.
Also, I don't care how Strong Buffy is, the whole Iron Girder scene where she lifts one up, that just didn't feel right. Granted it was for visual comdey, but I didn't laugh.

See, I have mixed reactions to the episode and i'll tell you for why. IF you suspend any belief that its believable, some of the jokes are really funny. The Trio make that episode. Actually when I first watched this episode, I really thought that the Trio would be a highlight of the season, and in some respects I was right......I still wish we'd had one Trio Number in Once more with Feeling...
Jonathan as the Devil Creature is hilarious, The Van is awesome and the Bickering is definitely something i'm guilty of in that respect.
Having said that, after the episode when I was sat down thinking about it, the Lint REALLY annoyed me.
I just didn't understand what we were supposed to believe. I mean twice Tara just leaves Buffy standing.

Gah.......anyway, it would never fall into my 'Worst Episode' grouping because it is pretty funny with suspended belief but it will never be a favourite.

PS. I want a Van with the Death Star on the Side.

i agree with that xander thing. i was reading the script after not having watched it in a while, and i was like, 'why is he saying all these things to her?'. also agree with the trio having a song, he he! :) someone should write that scene for them!
I liked the bonding over a bottle of tequila with Buff and Spike.

It reminded me of the classic strategy of getting a girl, who is in an emotionally fragile state, drunk in an attempt to bed her. Right up there with playing on their insecurities.

I respect the classics.

Plus honourable mention for the kitten poker.

Mummy hand = good.
Trio = hilarious.
Drunk Buffy = good.
Kitten poker = strange, but good.
Lint = AWFUL.

The lint was awful, and possibly, even in the Buffy world, unrealistic. It doesn't fit anything that every occured in past-future seasons and episodes... it wasn't even funny. It didn't make any sense. Bad idea. The only thing mildly funny about it was when Xander mentioned the exploding lint in Smashed. That made me smile a little... just 'cause Xander said it.

The mummy hand still didn't make perfect sense, however somewhat more than the lint. It was actually funny.

The trio was so funny I could barely keep it to myself. The Star Wars horn was the best part... the Death Star on the van was very very funny too. I didn't like the Jonathon/demon thing very much though, because it was just... kind of strange. And lame.

See, the great thing about Buffy being drunk is she hasn't been that drunk since Beer Bad... if I remember correctly. It's hilarious how she says she thinks Spike is drunk while running out of the demon bar on him. Downside: From what I can see, it was totally unlike Buffy. Maybe that's just because it wasn't shown how she got to drinking with Spike, which, at that point, would probably never be expected. If she keeps saying she hates Spike so much, even though we know she doesn't hate him, why does she even bother drinking with him? Cause that just doesn't make sense.

Does the kitten poker even need to be discussed? It was funny. There.

What lint thing is everyone talking about? I just watched this the day before yesterday. Did I like, block it out my memory or something? Anyway, I did like this episode, what I can remember of it. In fact, some scenes were downright hilarious. The mummy hand segment is one of my favorites. The Trio...their scenes were hilarious as well.

The work site scene was just fine until Xander fired Buffy, it wasn't her fault demons attacked and he was being a douche. I never had a problem with Xander until this season...he becomes more and more annoying and by season seven I practically hate him. He has his moments though.

For me, it was a fair to middling ep...but it has the absolute best obscure reference in the whole series. Did anyone other than me get it? I'm not all that smart, but I did read the book it came from...so that's my excuse...anyone else?

OK. I'll bite. What's the reference? I tried google. I saw a mention of some book called Practical Demonkeeping for the kitten poker scene. Is that the one?

This has got me wondering too. C'mon, Killerdwarf, narrow it down to a scene for us and see if we can figure out what you mean.

I don't know... KD's a sci fi fan. I don't thinks he'd call Logan's Run "obscure". Might as well say James Bond.

I guess you could say the way it's referenced is obscure though.

I'm tempted to read through the entire script but if it's really obscure I may not realise it when I see it.

Definitely waiting for a clue on this one.

Dzhu got it, but the reference is quick and obscure. In the (terrible) movie Logan's Run from the '70s, Logan was Logan 3. In the book, he's Logan 6, and Francis has a different number in the book as compared to the movie too, but right now it escapes me...the Trio uses the numbers from the book when they talk on the walkietalkies... very nitpicky, but very obscure...now that I think about it, I might have the Logan thing backwards, but they use the book reference as opposed to the movie one...the book was far better anyway...😉

I like this episode, I could name worse season six episodes... at least it doesn't make me want to kill myself 😛 Exploding lint didn't really bother me, but yeah I thought Tara was rude as well.. unlike her. The scene at the construction site didn't flow to well, but it might have been cool to see Buffy working in construction. I know she said she hated retail (The Magic Box), but I figured it would have been better then working at the Doublemeat Palace.

I actually really liked this episode. The only thing that I don't really like about it is when she decides to go drinking with Spike, it just seems a bit too desperate for me. They really pushed the Buffy/Spike closeness in the early season before they got all naked together, and I just didn't really buy into it much.

I love the Mommy Hand scene, its my favourite part of the episode 🙂

I also liked this episode. It was great comic relief for an emotion-heavy season.

Damn straight! As I posted in another thread Season 6 was so dark at times there needed to be humour somewhere. Buffy drunk was hilarious, especially when she freed the kittens!

yep needed this episode
For me, with Season Six I go to episodes like 'Life Serial', 'Flooded' and parts of 'Tabula Rasa' (Giles/Anya together!) and 'Hells Bells' for the humour as its the only real sources of it in pretty much the whole season.

I think the episode as a whole was quite amusing and is one I've watched several times. Maybe it's just because it's on the same disc as OMWF and I find it in my player a lot. :silly:

I think the mummy hand bit was funny, but the last time I watched it I wondered.... Logically, if that was really happening, would the Trio be able to just sit there and watch it unfolding? The same could be said for the Evil Lint. But then I just tell myself, this is a show about vampires and the kids who slay them. There are a lot of reasons that Back to the Future is illogical, but it's still one of the greatest movies of all time. Y'know?

I saw this episode yesterday (not for the first time!) and it's one of my favorites, it's so funny! By the way, look for its dailies in Youtube, Sarah is hilarious (I'm not the one who put the dailies there, I just really like and recommend them and I want everyone to see them!)
