Lingering OMWF Questions

I've been wondering this for years but never actually posted anything on it:
-When Buffy is singing "Something to Sing About" what is she really talking about? Like, when she says "Give me something to sing about" is she asking because she's bored/depressed with her life and has nothing good to sing about, or is she asking to give her something to sign about because she wants to die and that will allow her to die?
-Also, in the group song Buffy says "It doesn't matter" but then goes on to sing the sort of rousing part of the song "What can't we face." It just seems to conflict with the rest of the song. If she thinks nothing matters, why does she then sing "we have to fight, we'll pay the price" etc etc.

Just some curious questions I've had for a while and decided to finally get them answered.

That's how I always understood it.
 
For the I've Got a Theory Part...

She means all of their theories don't matter because as long as they stick together they'll figure it out and they'll all be okay.. at least that is what I understand it to mean. At this point they've gone through so much, why they singing about theories, it will all work itself out ya know?
 
During the song is when she finally admits to everyone that she was in Heaven before they brought her back to life. So when she sings "give me something to sing about" she's saying give me something to be happy about and to live for. She was at peace where she was and after she was torn out of there she couldn't stand living knowing what she had lost and felt like she would never find anything to be happy about again.

In the other song, she's saying "it doesn't matter" what they're up against cause as long as they have each other they'll face it together like they always do. Unless it's bunnies.

In the commentary it says something along the lines that Buffy says it doesn't matter because that is what she genuinely feels. Her 'what can't we face if we're together' is her ironic con job, convincing the gang that all is right and tight between them all even though she really has all this simmering resentment at being bought back by them, her friends. Or something like that...
 
I am much more of an optimist, i'd like to think she really meant it, but you're right tranquility, after all she was just "going through the motions"
 
When buffy is singing give me something to sing about , she is asking for a reason to live - which is a follow on from going through the motions. She has no idea why she is back in the world and doesn't want to be there.
when she sings what can't face when were together etc , is actually a follow on from the rest of the scoobs little chorus line, because they need her as a reason to go on more than she needs them, she'e just joining in beacause what else is she going to do
 
completely agree with mikey. The give me something to sing about is her trying to find a reason to live, thing of singing as living. Give her something to live for. She was in heaven and is now back in the cruel world which she gave her life for. She needed a reason to stay and no one could give her that, not giles, not her friends, not dawn, and not spike. She needed to find her own song herself.

As far as the theory line b/c they sing whatever they are feeling regardless of trying to hold it back or not i think she was really trying to say I wanna help and this is the only way to do it. I think at this point in the song she was really trying to be the super-hero she was and make everything better. This is also the song right after Going through the Motions and so her line in this could have been exactly that, going through the motions. She didn't want to tell her friends she was in heaven yet which is why it didn't come out in any of her previous songs, but when they finally get to the end of the ep she can't hold it in anymore and it comes out.
 
I think her "it doesn't matter" and the rest of that part of "I've got a theory" was her just cutting to the chase. She didn't care about the whole speculating on the nature of the disaster part--she was just saying "we can fix whatever it is."

I agree with everyone else about something to sing about.

And since this is a newish thread about OMWF, I must say how much I adore the moment in the Bronze when Giles says "she needs backup! Anya! Tara!" and they go and do the backup singing. So. Brilliant.

I also love both Giles' and Spike's faces as they launch into their solo numbers-- like "oh, God, why must I be singing?!"
 
I have a question too...

Why didn't Buffy hear any of Giles's song even though he was basically singing to her?
 
It seemed like this was put on like actual musical theatre - where no one knew the other person was singing unless they were supposed to. So Giles' song was supposed to be an aside showing his inner feelings. The same way that it seems Xander and Anya don't really hear what the other person is saying in their song. Just my 11 cents. 🙂

I think we're supposed to believe that Buffy doesn't hear the song Giles sings because 1) she's engrossed in training and so is too focused and/or 2) that she's still kind of in her own head because of the being pulled back to earth bit, so maybe the focus isn't necessarily on training to be better, but the focus is on trying to look like she really gives a crap anymore. In either case she isn't really aware of anything but her body movements at the time. Does that make sense?

i think xander and anya did hear each other's song b/c later on they talk about "one more verse of our little diddy and I would have been looking for a gas can" so i think they did hear each other. But i agree with how Giles song was about inner feelings being expressed, much like how when Giles and Tara sing the song together, Buffy and Willow are completely oblivious to anything they are singing.

It's not just "Standing in the Way" that Buffy doesn't hear. It's everything Giles has been telling her/warning her about in Season six that she chooses to ignore. It's also meant to be a funny wink wink to old musicals wherein the non-singing character is oblivious to the music going on. In this case it's actually literal. That's why Joss is a genius.

Exactly what I was going to say.
It's only recently that I've really started to fall in love with this episode; even the songs are starting to become bearable!

Anya's little rock verse about bunnies cracks me up often.

It took me like three times watching this episode back-to-back to get what Spike as saying in his song
