Lion Tries To Eat Zebra-Striped Baby

Baby Jack was taking his first trip to the zoo with his family on April 26, when an African lioness tried to swallow him whole. Luckily, a glass wall separated Jack from the gaping jaws of the massive feline.

I was so shocked at this, I just had to share it 🙂 Maybe I'm a little over protective but glass or not I would have moved that child away in a heartbeat! If you click on the link there's a video that is a lot more shocking!

I don't understand why people would think that's funny. Taunting the lion, who probably hasn't seen a zebra in years, and leaving the baby in front of the glass WHILE THE LION WAS TRYING TO EAT HIM like that. Just ridiculous. If that'd been my kid, I would have grabbed him the second the lion seemed interested and hightailed it out of there.

Wow, what IDIOT parents. The zoo shouldn't have let them in in the first place. Some people almost deserve to get mauled by lions.

EDIT: Oops, my bad. I misunderstood and thought the parents intentionally dressed him up in stripes to make him look like a zebra and pull a "funny" trick. Still, Would not leave my child there while a giant ferocious beast was trying to rip him apart.

I don't see anything wrong with it as a safety point of view. The baby didn't even care. If it had upset him, then of course it would have been wrong to leave him there for their own amusement.

Was it fair to the lion? Probably not. But neither are zoos 🙂

I hate these guys who put their childs into dangerous situations or try to shock them with silly video-games or otherthings just to upload the stripes on YouTube. This isn't fun, this is cruel.

I totally agree. The baby didn't appear to be in an real danger and didn't seem to mind the lioness at all. It would be different if the lioness looked angry and seemed to be seriously trying break through the glass; rather than swatting at it. If anything Jack has some cool pictures and videos to show people later in life.

Also, it's not totally uncommon for lions to interact with young children through the glass at zoos. According to the director of the Portland zoo (where this video was shot) it is typical predictor-prey behavior. There are numerous videos on you tube of similar situations you can watch.

I agree, nothing wrong here. Sure, if the kid gets scared, obviously it will be a bad memory, but right now, it looks like fun. I mean, I doubt the lion will all of a sudden get superpowers and be able to break through the glass, so I don't get the worry. The kid looks pretty yoong, even if he turned around, he might not be able to figure out that it's a dangerous animal there.

I've looked at the video, and the only one I feel sorry for is the caged animal. The kid doesn't look scared at all.

The lion looked more agitated than playful, hence I think they should have cut it off right away.

I don't think the video is that bad, I'm sure similar things happen all the time, that said - had it been my kid (I don't even care that he's almost 13 by now) but had that happened to him or one of my nephews I would have freaked out, glass or no glass, taken my kid and pretty much put a great deal of distance between us and the lioness.

I mean it's only natural predator-prey behavior too, and I'm sorry but I don't care how that thick that glass is, if my kid is being threatened I'm getting the heck out of there. I don't understand at all how you could calmly let your kid remain put in front of the glass like that!

Yeah I don't see the problem at all, the kid was safe.

Call me crazy, but I find that a bit funny. The lion could obviously never get to the child. I've seen this quite a few time when I went to the zoo. Lions, tigers, sharks bumping on the glass when they saw someone getting near the glass.

Makes me wonder if it's at all possible to make the animals unable to look through the glass. Somehow use a similar glass, but much much thicker, as the one-way glass used in interogations rooms. I just feel real bad for the animals. Must be stressful.

I just realized what I said. Obviously a lion seeing another lion in the glass would be stressful at well, so a non-relective surface would be needed.

I think it's good that this happened if it means that more people who go to the zoo are reminded that a lion is a predatory animal which is quite capable of killing a human being if it wants to. If we're going to have zoos, then that's what they need to be doing as part of their education remit.
