Loathed And Dispised?

BEG-- I fail to see how being illogical qualifies someone to be hated and loathed.
To be honest, I do.
The entire point of the boards is to debate and discuss issues, if someone makes up their own logic to apply to an argument, that's incredibly annoying, and would make you hate to argue with that person as it's frustrating - and that was the point of the original quote, they didn't just say they hated and loathed a member, the issue was with how the person had experienced debating with a particular group of fans.
It wasn't a personal attack, it was a generalising attack on a group, and thats no different to a lot of what is said on here.

Also, jokingly referring to Bangels being nasty is, in my opinion, far less offensive that saying that an entire ship supporting group is hated and loathed, but if you consider it to be inappropriate, then please accept my most humble apologies and rest assured that I will never refer to Bangels as either nasty or old again. On the other hand, if you would like to refer to me as a nasty old Spuffy, due to my age and ship affiliations, I will accept it as merely a statement of fact (I'll let the nasty part slide) Also, as I said, I was NOT defending some nameless Spuffy from the aforementioned (adjectives deleted) Bangles. My meaning might not have been clear there, but in a later post I clarified that I was not defending any particular shipper against any other shipper. I was objecting to one board member speaking to another board member in such a fashion. And for that, I offer no apologies whatsoever.

The same goes, I believe, for the offer to adopt Bangels. That is in no way saying that Bangels are hated and loathed. The same goes, I assume, for those who offered to Save A Spuffy, but I can't, of course, speak for them. Also, if the phrase, "Friends Don't Let Friends Ship Bangel" is offensive,I will be happy to change it to "There's No Place For Hatred Or Loathing On The Buffy Boards." (I may wind up asking for help in changing the darn thing, since I honestly can't remember how i got it on there in the first place)

As for the former predominance of Spuffy shippers earlier and the new majority of Bangles, vocal or otherwise, for that, also, I hope that you will accept my most humble apologies.

I have no problem with the little jabs here and there I dont get offended by that. But if a new person joins the boards and sees your banner saying you've been "fighting the bangel beast" I could see how they would be offended by it, first as it calls them a beast, and secondly cuz they're someone you have to fight.
I dont think you have to change it, I just mean that it seems odd to get annoyed by the comment at the start of the thread when it's in line with how discussions of that nature go.

The Save our Spuffies thing is a great example of how the vocal Spuffies used to be the only members here, While the adopt a bangel gag got loads of activity, I'm pretty sure the Save out Spuffies was a single page thread that was basically just me as a joke against the AaB thread, it went no where and wasn't a running gag, whereas you've kept the AaB mantra going past a lot of our current members even remembering the original joke.

If you or anyone else here can figure out how to change "Fighting The Bangle Beast" To "Defending The Spuffy Ship," (hopefully that isn't offensive) on my banner, you have my permission to do so. As I said, I don't know how to do it. And you might note that "Friends Don't Let Friends Ship Bangel" is no longer there.

And, once more, I don't see a statement that Spuffies are hated and loathed as a little jab.

You need a whole new banner, that one I made about a million years ago and cringe every time I see it because I've gotten so much better since then, lmfao.

But it's not just Spuffies that get this sort of thing directed at them, which is why I cannot understand this thread.

I've been a member of this forum for 9 years - this month is actually my 9th anniversary, I think. I was one of those who got deleted, lol - and in that time, I've been on both sides of this argument. (Yes, I was once a Spuffy, but I got better, lol)

When I was on the Spuffy side, I'd been called things like a rape fan, which is just disgusting. On the other side, I've seen Bangels called pedophiles, supporters of child abuse, and 'unimaginative idiots', which makes my stomach churn.

It's not a one sided thing and it's also not something that has only happened once, as this thread suggests, which is why I didn't pay much attention to it when I saw it in the thread - because it is far from the worst that I've seen in this fandom. Comparatively, it's pretty tame.

And I don't think the comment was directed at Spuffies as people - it had more to do with the fact that the Spuffy in question wasn't backing up arguments. I have seen Spuffies making stuff up and fudging canon to fit their ideas more than once - and I've seen Bangels do it to.

I guarantee you, the poster of the quote in question probably would have said the same thing if there had been a Bangel on the other side of the argument behaving the same way the Spuffy was.

I totally agree, it's not just the Spuffies who get this sort of thing directed at them, and I also agree that it's been going on, and getting worse as it time progresses, for quite some time. Does that mean that we should just stand around and let it continue? Eventually, either it has to stop, or this is going to stop being the sort of friendly, welcoming place that I have always perceived it to be.

And, once more, I was not defending whether or not the Spuffy in question was right or wrong, and if it had been a Bangel, or a Cangel, or a Briley, or any other ship or topic that you could mention, it would still be wrong, and I would have the same objections.

But I don't think it is getting worse.

I think it's actually getting better. Maybe it's just the fact that there are only two forums that I actively take part in, but the name calling HAS been getting better over the last few years. Maybe it's the fact that we've all gotten a bit older, a bit wiser, we realized that going around calling people 'rape fanatics' and 'supporters of child abuse' just because they support a certain ship is actually pretty ridiculous.

Guess what ? 4/14 /2014 was SMG's 37 th birthday. Guess how many fans posted congrats to her this year on the supposedly shipper-fobic central forum that transcends it all - after her recent twitter Bangel splurge? Go check out. (I give you a hint - the mods there banned all the Bangel fans.) Yes, I guess our fandom is that immature.

Were all shippers banned, or just the Bangels?

Well, the Spike/Spuffy-fans are there in numbers, so I assume they were not purged as Bangels were. Which resulted in somewhat funny situation/s. (For example the 10.1 issue of A&F discussion turned into a longish discussion of two panel preview of Spike into the Light , because I guess there are no folks left there interested in the actual Angel comic.) This forum is actually the only one of the major ones where you cannot be banned for being a Bangel/Angel fan. Which I think explains certain bitterness on our part. But going back to the original topic - I am not in favor of loathing of despising. We should just be more careful about pushing buttons and pulling triggers.

I still don't think there's been a Whedoneque Bangel purge. Some of us just lost interest in posting there.
One big issue that's triggered so many of the really heated Angel/Spike/Buffy arguments over the last while is that there are a good number of people, on both sides, who feel that their shipping preference defines them, therefore those who don't like it, or like the one they don't and say it, are personally attacking them. That's ridiculous, but it's the truth. Scroll back through a few of the threads from a couple months back. Once the discussion devolves into "Spike and Buffy is everything I feel about my life, it's just like me!" or "Buffy and Angel is everything love should be, I want passion just like that!" then, 99 times out of a 100, it becomes bickering. There's nothing wrong with feeling like that, identifying with fiction is something I absolutely do and think is a very, very positive thing, but I think it's important to realize that this is the internet, not everyone feels that way and just hysterically shouting "it's my opinion!" over and over again won't get anyone to do anything but roll their eyes.

That's disgusting. As strong a supporter of Spuffy as I am, and some here would say that borders on fanaticism, I have never believed or in any way seriously implied that Buffy wasn't ever in love with Angel, or even that she wasn't still in love with him. I just say that she loves Spike equally, but in a much different way.

As upset as I was and still am about the "loathed and despised" thing, this is far worse.

And by the way, I don't even pretend to speak for anyone else here, but as much as I enjoy the Spuffy relationship and prefer it Bangel, I freely admit that at least part of that comes from the fact that I saw them together first, which has always made me think of Angel as "that other vampire." If I had started watching from the beginning of Season 1, there's a chance, though a very small one, that I might have managed to stay in the Bangel fold for more than one month.

Have to correct folks here because all types of shipper were banned from Whedonesque and no particular group was singled out.

They just seem to dislike any kind of shipper talk sadly.
