OK, just to verify my uber-geek street cred...one thing liked about Buffy"”and to a lesser extent Angel"”was that the sets were relatively fakey, set-like. It ups the comic book, fantasy feel. Despite that, or because of that, there've been a few points in Buffy/Angel when I could imagine being in the episode, just sorta hanging out. This ocurred to me with that season 3 Angel ep when Angel and Lilah hook up in some bar and that bastard Sahjhan shows up. Would love to just hang out in that particular bar, have a drink with Lilah and Angel. Just loved the set design, lighting, the chilled-out mood. The whole scene had a very noirish feel, very appealing.

Now, as far as other establishments...I'm gettin a little old for a Bronze kinda scene, but that looks like a fun time too. Like the slightly loungy feel, with the couches and stuff. Karitas could be fun if you were with the right group of friends, but it seems a little cheesy to me. Has an oddly 80's, Miami Vice, Scarface feel to it. The Magic Box would be something to explore, just check out. Also, that coffee bar, cafe type place in downtown Sunnydale is good too. That'd be a nice place to chill. The Hyperion would be nice to check out if they fixed it up a little more. Do like the Deco feel it has very much.

Sunnydale High (no goin' back to highschool or any other hell dimension)


Mmm...oh yeah, there was Willy's place too. Supposed to be a dumpy dive for low-life demons I guess. When and where might you drop yourself into an episode, just to chill or be a fly on the wall? I used to daydream with friends about owning a bar, just some cool hangout...any favorite locales?
 
i guess the best place to hang out in a ep of buffy would have been the bronze, but i guess that's pretty obvious, huh?
how about working with buffy at the doublemeat palace? or part of the campus wicca group from hush? they got wicked powerful in the last season.!
the esspresso pump would have been a great place to blend in, or at one of xander's conscruction sites!
as for angel, i would have loved to have worked at W&H, but only during seaon five, when the gang was running it. i think i would have liked to work with wes! i'm a book geek!
 
I kinda liked the Summer's house, and especially the backyard, they didn't do so many scenes there but I always thought it looked like a nice place to hang out.
 
I loved many of the places.. Really wouln't mind living in Xander or Cordelia's appartment (well, the Summer's house is great too, heh)... Also, I love The Hyperion but I'm not sure what to do there. As a hangout, I think The Bronze seemed really great actually, and the Espresso Pump too...
 
I always thought that Giles' house (mainly in season 4) looked nice and cosy, probably my favourite Buffyverse set. I'd love to go to the magic box, I'd be like a kid in a candy store. Same goes for the bookstore in Angel (season 2, when Darla killed the owner).

You know, one thing that's generally fakey about TV architecture, set design is that the interiors are so giant, magnificent. The characters could never afford the rent, mortgage payments with their income.

"Buffy" seemed relatively realistic in that respect. Giles' place was pretty small, cramped. The Summers home was a modest bungalow and it looked like it, inside and out. Xander's apartment was sweet, very spacious. He must have been doing quite well at that point. I know it's not LA housing prices, but it is a coastal California town. Gotta be a pretty penny for real estate of all sorts.

Like I've said, I love the green interiors they use so often, very nice. And I like the Summers house cause it seems like such typical Americana: nice little back yard, front porch...

And I liked that they actually explained the reason for Cordy's sweet digs in LA.

It's interesting. When you go back and look at the progression of "Buffy", it seems to get more set-dependent as it moves along. Seems like there are more "real" location shots in the early seasons. More exterior set, soundstage shots later on. Not sure if that's right or not...it's been so long now since I've watched an ep.
 
I absolutely adored both Xander's apartment (sort of a forties vibe there. Not to mention the attractive ceiling fans) and Giles' place. So cute, and comfy, with the green paint, sort of run-down tiny kitchen and the TILES. I love his tiles. And his door! Ok, yeah, I want to live at Giles'. Also, I love the 'new' Bronze, with the wall of tvs and the new lighting.
 
The Bronze reminds me of the First Avenue in Minneapolis (where they shot a lot of Purple Rain). The First Avenue is all dark and industrial looking. There's exposed ducts and pipes and stuff. Everything's painted black. There's the main dance floor, plus loungy areas to either side. And there's a balcony area with a bar. The Bronze is like a tiny, more cozy version of the First Ave.

Wonder if all the Buffyverse sets have all been trashed, recycled at this point...would be fun to walk around.

It's neat to see how they do all the TV short cuts in the design featurettes. Like using photocopies to make tile patterns and stuff.
 
I could always envision myself in some of the sets. The Summers home, of course, just because it was a relatively comfortable home. I loved the kitched, where you could sit at the counter and eat.

I probably would also go to the Espresso Pump and the college dorms. I was in college during seasons five-seven, so I guess I could always relate to some of the college scenes (dorms-ick, cafeteria-def ick...)

But, I'm really wondering who would want to visit the lovely Hellmouth? Any takers?
 
Nah, the Hellmouth was boring, just a dark, dank cave really. I kinda liked the look of Illyria's home dimension, even though it was all destroyed. Kinda like some ancient Roman/Greek/Hindu cityscape. With a dash of the demonic.
 
I caught "As You Were" (S6) last night on TV, and I was struck at how realistic some of the sets looked. For example, Buffy was down in the basement laundry room at her house, trying to get grass stains out of her coat...the room was detailed, so much so that I'm sure it could have been anyone's laundry room, right down to the bucket and mop off to one side, and the two or three bottles of fabric softener, stain remover and soap on the shelf over the washer.

I like the Summers' kitchen. Nice place for breakfast. Or the Espresso Pump. Sit on the stool and watch the carnage unfold!
