Loki in "The Avengers"

Did it seem to anyone else that Loki, as the principal bad guy in the movie, seemed to be just totally outclassed when he went up gainst the Avengers? EVERYBODY, at some point, wound up either out smarting him, the way that Natasha did, or beating him somehow? Cap deflected his power bolt back into his face, then Iron Man blasted him off of his feet. Hawkeye blew him up with an explosive arrow, and the Hulk

I know that he wa the main bad guy, and the focus of all of the attention, but it just seems to me that Joss particularly had it in for him. This is the same guy who created Glory and the Beast,so he knows how to create a virtually undefeatable villain, then find a way to beat him in the end. He should have made Loki more formidable

I liked Loki a lot in both Thor and The Avengers, but yeah, he got beaten pretty thoroughly in The Avengers. I liked him as the principal villain though because it meshes with the original Avengers origin story. In the comics, Loki brainwashes The Hulk into a rampage and The Avengers ban together to stop him. They obviously altered a substantial amount of that movie (for starters, there's no Captain America in the first Avengers team. He was introduced later).

Loki on screen is a bit different than Loki in the comics. He's grown more powerful over the years on the page, and his plots are usually incredibly layered and complex. I have a feeling he'll still be a part of the franchise moving forward, because by far the coolest Loki moment came in the crossover event book "Siege" a few years ago, where he teamed up with Thor and The Avengers to take down The Sentry, a nigh-unstoppable foe. Considering that they've built some ambiguity into him in the Thor franchise, I'd be surprised if he's just gone.

I never saw Loki as the villain. To me, he was always more like the right-hand man of whoever he was working for (in the last scene we learn his boss' boss is Thanos).
And I guess Joss could have made Loki a stronger opponent, but I don't think he should have. I don't think he should have just changed his abilities. It would have been quite weird if he suddenly was way stronger than in the Thor movie.

Right. Cap was introduced in Issue 3, making him actually "The Last First Avenger" or "The First New Avenger," depending on your point of view.

As far as I remember, originally Loki only had his mental prowess as his ability. Given that Joss has done a few things with mind control, Loki would have been the ideal character for Joss to unleash his talents.

I disagree. He was very formidable and Joss made him that way. Everyone kept asking how Loki, who Thor had easily beaten up, would be a threat in the Avengers, but as we saw, with the right planning, allies and weapon, he was a real threat. He played the Avengers up until the final show down(OK, he did not realize Black Widow could outlie him, which was so cool), when it wasn't a game anymore, it was simply war. Then he lost, because he hadn't counted on them actually getting back as a team after he thought he had caused enough chaos to rip them apart.

He was kicking Cap's ass, and could probably have delivered lot of hurt to Iron Man too, but as Tony suspected, he wanted to get caught, so he could get onto the ship and shatter the Avengers. I think he could have avoided capture in Germany if he wanted too, but he wanted Banner to Hulk out, and do some creepy mind game stuff while he was at it. "Test their metal" as he said in the deleted scene.

I'm not saying he had the same unbeatable air about him as Glory or The Beast, but he's a threat al right.

Yeah I think the only one that really kicked his ass was The Hulk, it was only after that fight that he was down.

Also the First Avenger refers to that fact that he was fighting bad guys first before the others were around, so makes perfect sense.

I thought Loki did a good job at pushing the Avengers considering who he was up against. Also I dont think he was meant to be 'invincible' I think the first film was to set up the avengers for much bigger and better challenges.
