Anyone heard about this? As it's where I grew up it's pretty scary although I can watch the BBC news from the safety of my own home two hours away. It's now spread to Birmingham (2nd biggest city).

I've had the news on, it's insane there's no reason for it. All they are doing is looting and destroying buildings
 
I've been watching it all weekend; quite frankly I'm kind of stunned it has gotten to this stage.
 
yeah I live about 15 miles from Birmingham. The state off affairs this country is in at the moment the last thing it needs is to be paying out millions because mindless people are destroying property.
 
I've also been following it all weekend. I just can't get my head around it. The violence and damage is just unimaginable. I've been so shocked by how flippant these people have been with fire; it really has been a case of watching London burn.

I'm so anxious about how much further it will spread; the outer parts of London are so close to where I live. On Saturday night I wouldn't have imagined it would escalate into this and now I wonder where it will end.

It has really saddened me; listening to those affected and watching what some of the people in my country are to doing to others. I feel incredibly ashamed; the whole thing is just devastating.

Watching people loot, destroy buildings and destroy other people's property is really sickening. The police have been getting so much stick but I personally could not imagine having to face that kind of violence head on. They may be trained, but they're still human and I truly feel for them as they try to find some way to control it in the midst of all that abuse and violence.

that was just a rumour it was actually the police station nearby, not that thats any better
I've been following it the last couple days as well and it is truly atrocious. It really shows a ignorant and disgraceful side of humanity. I hope the police are able to get in under control soon and that those responsible for causing millions of dollars worth of damage to property are held responsible.

Violence and destruction are never the answer.

I've been glued to Twitter all weekend watching it unfold. It's just bizarre how much this has gotten out of hand.

There's been rumours of something being 'organised' in Bristol soon which is slightly worrying. As good as social media is, it's made it very easy to facilitate mass civil disobedience on such a large scale. I hope everything calms down soon.
 
It's all moved to where i live now... loads and loads of police vans and horses are waiting in the high road. One car is on fire so far. This is Loughton so i dont no if this will be on the new soon.....

It's worrying generally- I'm nowhere near London but do live about 10 miles from the centre of Leeds, which has some similar racial/economic problems in certain areas.

What people outside the UK might not realise is that two of the top police officers in London were recently forced to resign because of the ongoing phone hacking scandal, so the police in London don't have strong leadership at the moment and I think the looters are taking advantage of this. Looking at the TV pictures I do think there's a racial element to it just by looking at the skin colour of the people involved, but how that fits in I don't know. But it's just destruction and robbery for no good reason- there isn't even an attempt to have some sort of political justification.
 
This is beyond terrible. I hope those of you who dwell in that country manage to stay safe during this most heinous display of ignorance.

Our television reception has been wonky in recent weeks, so we can't really rely on getting news too well. We heard about this on the radio, but they don't elaborate on what's going on. WHAT sparked all of this? WHY is it happening?

There was an incident involving a young man and the police in which the man was shot dead. There was then a peaceful protest at his death as they felt he died for no reason, whereas the police claim he had a gun. The IPCC has set up an enquiry to find out exactly what happened.

However, then the violence, fire and looting started, which was carried out by people seeking to jump on the bandwagon of antipathy towards the police and act like morons. The rest is history.

So sad! Sometimes I really wonder if things really will get any better and we'll stop all this nonsense.

Unconfirmed reports that someone has been shot in the riots from ITV (I believe). That would be the first death, and I hope it's the last.

Sky News reporting a man has been shot and injured but they don't have any more info than that.
Anyone near the riots right now, I seriously hope you're all okay <3 I live in Newcastle so I'm at the opposite side of the country from it, but it's freaking me out so much. I don't even understand why they're doing it. I mean, I've been told about how it escalated from the protests in Tottenham, but I don't understand why people are joining in and letting it escalate. Innocent people are getting hurt. I bet you 90% of the people rioting can't give you a solid reason why they're doing it.

Theres just no need.
 
The scary thing is is that it sounds too organised to have happened just because of the supposed trigger. Like it was planned first and all people needed was an excuse.

Oh wow, I seriously cannot believe how far protestors (can we even call them that?) are taking it. I mean setting fire to anything does not seem like a rational way to handle it. Then again, it doesn't seem like they are the most logical people right about now. So all of this started as a peaceful protest/memorial for a man whom the public believes was innocently killed by police?

I hope everyone who lives near there is being safe. My thoughts go out to all of y'all.
