One of the reasons Buffy & Angel can't be together is that one moment of pure happiness makes Angel lose his soul. But as Wesley told Angel, the curse isn't necessarily referring to sex, just how Angel feels perfect happiness when being with Buffy specifically.

So couldn't they get around Angel being perfectly happy with his copulation with Buffy by simply having her constantly tell Angel that Spike is better in bed than him while they're doing the act? There's no way Angel would ever be perfectly happy.

That might solve Angel's problem, but it creates a new one for Buffy. She has to settle for the second best vampire lover.

exactly, no reason to do that! :p

No, actually he would be happier because he would find the fact that she would go to such lenghts so he could retain his sould unbelievably endearing and love her even more for it. Keep up!
Except how Angel would know it was complete and utter lies and end up losing his soul anyway as proof.

Then part of the joy of the moment would be lost, because he thought that the love of his life was lying to him.
Hahaha, thanks guys, that was funny.

But seriously, this loophole, it's a pretty big one. I'm actually surprised that Angel, even tough feeling so very guilty all the time, didn't kill himself when losing his soul in Eternity(season 1, he got a happy pill).

I'm not saying he should have, after all, anyone can become a evil vampire(any human anyway) so he's not bad for not killing himself, but I'm still suprised. Maybe his self-presevation was stronger thah his guilt? Or maybe he thought he was safed if he stayed away from sex and drugs?

I have wondered about this curse a lot. As long as Angel worries, he's safe, isn't he, even if he's happy? I mean he got Connor, which must have been the happiest time of his entire life, but he kept his soul. I guess that was because he was thinking "I might lose him, what if he gets a soul, I wonder if he'll hate me when he hits puberty, etcetc" like any loving parent. It's not like when he had sex or was drugged, because then your worries go away and you "live in the moment". Ignorance is bliss and all that.

Not sure if I had anything to say with this, just a observation.

"maybe he thought he was safed if he stayed away from sex and drugs?" What about Rock n' Roll?
I've never really understood why the Gypsies would put such a diabolical condition into the curse and then never bothered to tell him about it.

Maybe they couldn't come up with anything better. And maybe they thought that if he found out that he could lose his soul if he became happy, he would try and succed in becoming happy? Just to get rid of the guilt.

I think that in the beginning, Angel might actually have tried that. As we saw in flashbacks in season 2 of Angel, he wasn't in the best place.

I think the only thing worse for a Vampire than getting a soul would be to give him/her a soul, then to threaten to take it away if they did the one thing that would make their soul happy. Its like being given a million dollars and not being able to spend it. Hes been given the ability and the need to love, but he cant.

Yeah, but that wouldn't be why they did it, would it?

I mean you're right, one hell of a punishment, but you didn't mean that that's why they did it, did you?

Correct me if there's any evidence to the contrary which I'm overlooking... but I've never seen the "clause" in the curse as anything the gypsies deliberatley decided to put there. I see it more as the mystical equivalent to the "risks & side-effects" you get listed on a medicine description paper. 😉

So....you're saying Angel shouldn't attempt to operate heavy machinery while under the influence of a soul?

More like: "WARNING! Screwing underage cheerleaders with superpowers can result in blissful destruction of your conscience and lead to psychopathic behavior. For further information, please consult your nearest witch doctor or alchemist."

Shouldn't the knowledge that he could possibly revert to Angelus from having sex with Buffy be enough to ruin the perfection of the event? I mean, I would think technically he and Buffy could get together again and it wouldn't be entirely dangerous because there would be a worry undercutting the potential danger of his happiness.

True, but when having sex, Angel couldn't easily get distracted from the worrying?

Nah, apparently not.

But I always assumed so until the episode where he had sex with Nina. When he had sex with Darla and didn't lose his soul, I thought that was because he was so super-depressed it was impossible for him to forget his pain for even a moment. But I assumed that if he had sex while being in a semi-super-depressed mood, he would risk his soul.

Apparently Angel didn't think that, since he had sex with Nina without worrying too much.

That's write, but if Buffy was telling him that Spike's better in bed, I'm sure nothing would get that off his mind!

That's my guess. I think that was the best spell they could come up with, but they knew it had flaws.

On a serious note, I disagree. I think the gypsies cursed him with a soul to suffer. They didn't want him to enjoy the soul, so if he used it for pleasure rather than suffering they wanted him to lose it.

I think so ya! he'll live in torment from guilt for his past deeds, and never be able to know happiness. Sounds like a bad time to me. I think thats totally why the Gypsies did it. Pretty creative torture I think

I'm not sure if the Gypsies would be so hell bent on revenge they would risk that. Wouldn't they be scared that he would lose his soul, delibrately or not, and come after them?

But it would be a aweful punishment. If he knew about it, which he didn't at first. I doubt they would use a curse with that extra kick without telling him, since then he wouldn't hurt they way the intended to. The only way he would find out would be if he lost his soul or someome else, non-Gypsy, told him. A unefficent punishment.

I've always wondered if Angel's torture wouldn't have been much more bearable if he, like Spike, had had someone to say, "I believe in you," rather than Darla saying, "Get away from me! What have they done to you? You've been cursed!" Both vampires felt the shame and guilt of all of the things that they had done, but Spike had someone, almost from the very first, to actually care about and encourage him.

As seen in Season 1 when Buffy finds out he's a vampire and then supports him, he gets a lot more "social".
