"Lost Girl"

I just saw the first episode of this series on the internet, and was wondering if anyone else knew anything about it. It reminds me slightly of Hamilton's Princess Meredith series crossed with the Dresden Files.

Finally...

Found somebody who's seen it. I was almost going to go to the Canadian thread in International to find somebody, and I think of that thread as being more just for yuks.

But yeah, I'm loving this show - Lost Girl.

You know how people are always hoping for the replacement to Buffy? Not quite there yet, but this might be the one.

You just saw the first ep, right, so you're thinking, well...it's interesting, but it's no Buffy.

It gets better.

Discovering it kind of reminded me of when I first discovered Angel. I thought, that's sort of interesting. I'll watch that again, so I did, and it kept getting better with flashes of special until I reached the point I was researching on the internet, and discovered the Buffy connection. Then it was all over. Checked out Buffy. landed on Hush. I was hooked.

Lost Girl is still no Buffy, but it's something special, and it keeps getting better. I think I'm on ep 7.

I'll give you a warning though. It borrows from absolutely everything. You'll be thinking "hey that's like Angel, that's like True Blood, that's like Witchblade, that's like Dresden Files". Don't be distracted by all that. Ride with it. Enjoy it. Think of it as part of its charm, and being there by design. You'll find in spite of the familiar tropes Lost Girl still has it's own distinct personality. There's flashes of the unique unto itself. The world they create is like a lot of others you've seen, but its still its own place.

Part of that feeling of familiarity is it's filmed in the same area of Canada and by the same crew as a recognizable chunk of cheap science fiction has been over the last five to seven years. This time though, they connected. They've got a winner.

Honestly man. Trust me. This one's worth a few more downloads.

Actually, I've seen all 7 episodes so far (Thank you, Project Free TV!) and I agree, it gets better as it goes along. I do wish that there would be some sort of explanation about just how Bo got to be such a good fighter with, as far as we know at the moment, no training whatsoever, and I keep hoping that the cop will eventually "wolf out" completely, just to see what werewolves look like in their universe.

(I keep hoping that at some point Bo runs into an incubus, just to see how they would handle it.)

That would be a kick, wouldn't it? I know the fae have them. I'm pretty sure I heard Lauren mention treating one. Speaking of incubus, have you read this article about Anna Silk - the actress who plays Bo?

Anna Silk did not have to look up what a succubus was before playing one on TV.

It seems the Fredericton born actress had already researched the history and characteristics of the soul-sucking demon due to some persistent nightmares she had as a teenager.

The terrifying dream, she later discovered, was common enough to be known as the incubus and succubus phenomena, where the dreamer appears to be awake but suffers from sleep paralysis. Originally, this was thought to be caused by a demon that sprang from medieval folklore. An incubus is the male version, while the succubus is its seductive female counterpoint. When Silk landed the lead role of a tormented, sexually aggressive but oddly sympathetic succubus named Bo in the sci-fi-horror show Lost Girl, she felt her teenage night terrors had given her some insight.

"It was sort of a paralyzing, and a taking over of your ability to move." says Silk, in the midst of publicity rounds for Lost Girl Tuesday at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in downtown Calgary. "I want to make it clear that it was not a sex dream."

That was of personal interest to me. I used to get those dreams too. I didn't know they were common.

What would happen if an incubus got it on with a succubus, I wonder. Would they sap each other out, or would the magic kind of neuter itself?

I just watched the first episode. Really good, I can see where the Buffy comparison is coming from. This ep felt like Buffy S1 in its entirety lol I love all the quipping and Kenzie is fantastic.

Is it skill, and technique though, or is it super-strength, instinct, and a rough and a tumble early life. I get the impression she has some sort of super-strength. In the last one she does that pick the bad guy up by the neck thing we generally only see the super-strong do.

Does he wolf out though - in the sense they need CGI to do the transition to werewolf thing? He has turned into an actual wolf. Remember Kenzi telling Bo about it, and saying something like "That was so awesome. I saw his wolf junk."

Super strength, instinct, and a rough and tumble life style might help in a hand to hand fight, but throwing a knife, especially one that she had never seen or held until literally minutes previously, with the kind of pinpoint accuracy needed to pin someone's sleeve to a beam without even breaking the skin, requires very specialized training and a lot of it, plus more than a small amount of luck. (I know, I'm a stickler for details, but I always counted how many times the cowboys shot their pistols before reloading, too)

And I completely missed the "wolf junk" reference.

This is a fun show. It's getting better as it goes and they are starting to bring in some of the bigger myth arc.

It was just announced that it's been renewed for a second season of 13 episodes so hopefully a US station will pick it up.

They appear to be marketing it for the US. The city is unnamed, and there's all those sneaky little American references like "the midwest", and "Fourth of July in my mouth".

Usually it takes a while for a Canadian series to get picked up south of the border unless it has American money. I think Showcase's previous hit, Trailer Park Boys was in something like it's 5th season before I started hearing Americans talking about it. The UK might have even got that one first.

The people behind Lost Girl have lobbed a couple of bombs south in the past though - Blood Ties, and Mutant X. American stations might be a little Canuck shy right about now.

This one's number one at Showcase right now though. It appears to getting internet buzz too. The girls at AfterEllen look like they really like it. 😉

Haven't really thought much about that yet. I'm just enjoying the Bo/Kenzi dynamic. Not sure about the Bo/Dyson/Lauren thing yet. Need more time.

Where can I watch this? I'm going stir-crazy at home. We have snow here, and as a result I've missed work three days in a row. Old episodes of Moonlight just aren't cutting it right now, lol.

You know, I've grown wary of people who tell me a show is "like Buffy."

Someone told me that about Veronica Mars and after watching a few eps, I just didn't agree.
