I'm surprised how much I'm loving Terrible Writing Advice, and this one made me think some here could enjoy it:
Some samples of it...
"Now that magic is added into our complex and technologically interconnected modern world, we have to very carefully set up one thing before we work on any other aspect of our story: the love triangle!" (He's got a point, and I think this drove some of the world building of the Buffy and Angel shows to an extent. That said, Whedon's shows do skip or subvert a lot that other vampire and urban fantasy series don't.)
"Now the biggest decision we have to make is what type of supernatural being our male romantic leads will be." Vampires top the list, and includes that they must retain their blood lust for its a great excuse to angst over their desire to savagely murder the protagonist who ("of course") they are in love with ("because I know I always struggle not to fall in love with my food"), and shows the written tip, "Don't worry ladies, you can change him!" After it moves on to werewolves in which once one scratches below the surface then it's very similar, such as, "However, just like vampires, the hunky werewolf must struggle with his true nature to avoid savaging the heroine into bloody viscera. How romantic!" 😀
It adds that it need not limit the heroine to a mere love triangle restricted to vampires and werewolves but provide a virtual harem of admirers for her (and I think Riley got a guest spot there in his examples, though not called by name). "With an army of models pining over our protagonist, we can now detail our main character."
He does go into the teen Chosen One model (though the portrayal seems more of a cross between Buffy and Faith, and the comic image shows her having a father as well as mother) and adds, "Of course, don't address that most people wouldn't trust a teen with a car, much less shouldering the fate of the world."
And after discussing pitfalls to avoid, concludes, "...too much world building and every page not dedicated to a werewolf vampire love triangle is waste of words."
In the end, it's not too different from fanfic. 😛
Though to be fair, the love triangle does seem to be a common component to most genres, especially if trying to appeal to as many people as possible, at least when females are desired as viewers (but I can think of plenty where love triangles are at least made room for in regards to male protagonists as well, but usually they're more about getting or keeping the hard to get girl that plays hard to get or starts out as an enemy, at least not someone he's sure he can trust, but some can have "meaningless" erotic encounters with other women in the process that are quickly forgotten by both the male protagonist and audience).
