LURK: A Fray Fan Film
by Vincent Valentin

A fan film based on the limited series comic book "Fray" created by Joss Whedon.

"In every generation there is a chosen one..."

What is Lurk?

Lurk is a fan film based on the Joss Whedon comic "Fray" made by Buffy fans for Buffy fans. Everything we raise on Kickstarter will be going towards production so we can provide you, our backers, with a truly epic short film. We want the chance to tell a story in the future Buffy-verse and bring another badass Slayer to life.

Why "Fray"?

All of us on the Lurk team are huge fans of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. We were there from the pilot until the finale when Buffy Summers watched Sunnydale collapse into a crater. We are the fans that rewatch the series time and time again, though some of us understandably refuse to watch "The Body" more than once.

With Joss Whedon's "Fray" comics, we were introduced to a new Slayer. Melaka Fray, a young thief living in Haddyn (23rd century Manhattan) one with just as much gumption and snark as Buffy and we fell in love with her as well. She struggles with family tragedy and coming to terms with her destiny as the chosen Slayer.

In the ten years since Buffy has been off the air, there has been a Buffy Summers-shaped hole in our hearts. We love the characters in "Fray" and we thought that telling the story of Melaka Fray on film was both a natural progression and the perfect opportunity to make something cool for the fandom.

Lurk is our contribution to the Whedonverse. It is our little way of giving back and continuing the Slayer legacy, and we need you, the fans, to help us make it!

The team behind Lurk is made up of working professionals in the film industry with years of studio, production company, and digital platform experience to students currently in the prestigious film school at Loyola-Marymount University. We all feel very passionately about the project, not just because we love the Whedonverse but because we believe in our ability to bring the story of Melaka Fray to life. This is a film that we want to see and it's time that we have someone like Mel on screen. Please help us make it so!

Even Slayers Need Friends.

All of us on the Lurk team are dedicated to bringing the story of Melaka Fray to life and so every dollar of your donation will go towards this goal. We have the crew, the game plan, the actors, the lurks. All we need now is your support. Help us reach our goal in this continuation of the Buffy-verse. Bring forth the power of fandom!
"¢Stunts/Special VFX. While the characters in "Fray" are really interesting and well-done, there's also nothing like a great fight scene. Your donations will be a great help in us making this film safe for the actors and stuntpeople involved. We want to do our fight choreography right, so the end product will not only be completely 100% safe, but also look super cool and unique!
"¢Locations. One of the challenges in adapting a story that is set in the future is finding an appropriate location. We have a few in and around the Los Angeles area that we are looking to use, but we need your help in locking them down. The more money we raise, the better the location, and the more believable it will be that we're some 200-plus years in the future.
"¢Feeding the vampires. Blood is surprisingly expensive and we'd rather them not munch on our crew. Do you know how hard it is to find a good sound guy?

Most of equipment cost will be covered by LMU, but there's still a number of things we need help with so we can make the best film we can!

Our stretch goal of $15,000 will help us tell an even longer story.

We'd ideally like to extend the run time of the short film so we can bring in more of your favorites from the Fray-verse. The more donations we get the more we can do, including our pipe-dream of inserting a flying car or two!

"Just Rewards"

We've put together some really exciting things as a thank you for you helping us out. For one, Spencer of Heymonster fame has graciously agreed to design a special edition Melaka Fray shirt for us as part of his art series about awesome female characters.

Besides that, we'll also be providing lots of digital downloads, signed copies of the script, promotional stills, and even a special photoshoot starring YOU as the Slayer! Come on, that's a once in a lifetime opportunity.

Help Spread the Word!

It's not just the financial support we need but exposure, too. Please spread the word on Facebook/Twitter/blogs/forums and help us make Lurk. Feel free to chat with us on any of these platforms. We don't bite!

Yeah, she looks good but I was always thinking someone a little more Faith-like in stature. Or alt in general. Still, their attention to detail and passion is admirable.

The only thing I dislike about it is that it's not actually Joss doing more Fray lol. But, I'm just glad it's getting some attention.

Has Joss indicated that he wants to do anymore Fray in the future, she showed up in the season 8 comics? That was the last I heard of anything.

That will be interesting when it's completed, but I have just one question, which I'm sure that everyone else already knows the answer to.

Once it's made, how do we actually see it? Obviously, they can't sell it, or it would infringe on copyright laws. (It probably would anyhow, if Joss wanted to make an issue of it) Is there a site on the net where they show programs like this, or do they show them at conventions and such?

And why is her scythe so long? It's supposed to be almost identical to Buffy's, and it didn't look like it was even 3 feet long.

I think that if you donate X amount to the Kickstarter, you get a digital download. Somehow they can get around that because they're not actually making a profit.

Yes, others have noticed the length of the Scythe as well.

I've just chipped in for this. I struggle to get as engrossed in comics as I can with live action. I'm really looking forward to seeing if they can make this a good watch.

Looks cool!

On a side note Amy Dallen (the girl with short hair at the beginning of the trailer) works at the comic book store down the street from where I live! I've been buying my BTVS comics from her for years and I never knew she was this into Buffy. 😱 Clearly I need to make more small talk with her. 😱
