Lying to the Burkles

Lol...so issue resolved huh? It was Illyria who should be punished for this horrible deception...not that Man-beast Wesley 😀

It wasnt really Wesley's fault, Illyria turned up as Fred because she cant stand the effect of grief...and...ok, Wesley didnt say that that was Illyria, but I think it would've been harder for them to know that something is walking around with their daughters face...

does anyone want to consider that Wes may not have told them because he couldn't deal with even saying it himself? He would have had to act supportive for them and Wes is the last person I think of when I think of supportive. He saw an opportunity to spare both his and their feelings for the time being and he took it.

That is a good point. Wes was still very broken from what had happened and admitting it to them would mean admitting it to himself. He'd gone past the point of really wanting to talk about it--he just let life go on as it is and I think what kept him together (mostly) was that he had to keep reminding himself that Illyria was not Fred.

I think as far as him lying to Fred's parents to save them from grief was out of kindness. He was going to tell them. Then Illyria stepped in and posed as Fred. It would have been too complicated and painful to explain what had happened to the "real" Fred, so I think Wesley knew it would have been better to just let her parents think she was still alive, for the time being. As someone else said, perhaps if they had survived the battle in the end and the show had gone onto a sixth season, Wesley would have told them, after the pain had lessoned for him.
 
Personally i think Illyria's actions put Wes in an impossible situation when it came to telling the Burkles the truth. "Fred" was standing right there in front of them, how exactly do you then tell them that she is really dead and that this isn't their daughter? I honestly do believe that he was about to tell them Fred had died but the shock of seeing her standing there threw even him.

Which leads me to another point. I think Wes was looking for every reason possible to deny Fred's death, even to himself. Seeing Illyria as Fred gave him all the reason he needed to push the truth away again, perhaps even a faint hope that Fred was truly still alive in some form, buried deep within Illyria.

I think that Wes was in serious denial about Freds death and he didn't want to lose her, I mean come on he had a constant reminder of her everyday, yes a blue haired version but that must of been hard for him.

I actually felt really sorry for Wes when Illyria came in as Fred. He was about to tell her parents the devastating news and then she appears. How would you handle it? I think I'd find it a bit hard to continue with them there!

I get that he should have told them earlier about Fred's death but I understand why he didn't.
