Mad Max Best Picture?

So WB is making an Oscar push to nominate Mad Max Fury Road into the Best Picture category. It's got a 97% Critics Rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics, even those that don't 'like' genre movies, pretty much universally praised the movie. I still cannot see the Academy Awards including Mad Max in the Best Picture category.

Should it be nominated for best picture?

I don't think it will be nominated. So far, it's my favorite movie of the year, but there are too many "serious" films that will be nominated, many of which haven't even been released yet. Without knowing too much about the film, I'd say The Revenant will win Best Picture. However, Fury Road might win Editing, Sound Editing etc. I think it could also be nominated for Cinematography, but I think that's gonna be between Sicario and The Revenant.

Think it has an outside chance of being nominated but is more likely to recieve nods in the techical catagories. Another thing which will work against it is that it was released way back in early summer, for whatever reason the Oscars tend to favour films that are released closer to nomination time, and over look older releases, see Great Gatsby for an example of that.

I don't think it'll get nominated, but I hope it does, I think it's worthy of being nominated. It's just a shame that an action base movie like this has basically no chance of winning.

I still found it a tad overrated. I mean it was really good and all, but I wouldn't say that it is in the year's top ten films personally.

That's the one thing that will stop it. It's an action film. Otherwise it certainly would be nominated.

Is there a category in the Oscars for best action sequence in a movie? If not I think there should be, cause some actions movies while overall may not be great, but they have some good action scenes.

I'm one of the few that didn't really like or care for Mad Max. I do think it's over rated, so it doesn't deserve a best picture nod, just my opinion. But maybe for something like best visual effects.

That's actually not a bad idea, it would be fun to highlight some of those scenes which really stood out but maybe get overlooked because of a film not getting a good response, and it might also give attention to an unsung member of the crew or something. The only thing is if it was introduced you would then open the flood gates with people saying "Why don't you have best romantic scene in a film, Funniest scene, scariest scene" etc...

The only award Mad Max could be put forward for would be for CGI work etc: Take out the CGI, green screen, and special effects and all the stunt people and there isn't much left, like all the Mad Max films.

I have a feeling Mad Max will probably end up being relegated to special effects or best cinematography, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed for a nomination for best picture. It was honestly one of the best movies I have seen in my life. Not only was the cast diverse in terms of age and gender (ok yes they were all white, that's one of the downfalls), the movie was also incredibly cinematic AND it assumed that you weren't a dumb audience. Movies these days fall into a trap of having to explain every backstory and every character's decision process (superhero movies especially, looking at you, mcu) but Mad Max didn't do this. I dunno tho, usually the nominees end up going to indie darlings and movies released in december, so we'll see. Most of the current predictions are indie darlings, pretty much.

I agree take out all the SFX from a film and not much of the film will exist, however that is dependant on the quality of the crew and the actors. When special effects are used for giants, dragons etc: the quality starts to show through. Making the actors able to look at the eyes of the special effect can make a film, how many films are there that have actors looking in the wrong place.

Not too sure if I'm misunderstanding your point here? But Mad Max had a lot of real life stunts, and the cars were actually built and everything. Sure, there was some CGI, but a lot of it was done by special effects and stunts (and a lot of the actors did their own stunt too).

Sure, there was some CGI

There was more than SOME CG. There was alot of CG. But it was CG done well so you didnt notice it and it complemented more than distract. Here's some examples, and be sure to watch the video.
