My wife asked me, after reading the "Unseen" trilogy, "Why do they always spell magic with a k?"
I said that I thought it was because it was supposed to be real "magick" as opposed to stage "magic". Iwas just surmising but it sounded reasonable to me - was I right?

David Blaine is an annoying git now (whatever a git may be...don't have those on this side of the pond 🙂 ) but once upon a time he was an awesome magician. Before he became "Retardo Publicity Stunt Man", he was doing card tricks and the like on the streets in New York City. He's very, very good at slight of hand tricks. I can't imagine why he stopped - actual tricks are much more interesting than hunger strikes and blocks of ice, if you ask me!

Interesting point about magic/magick, AshSan. I always thought that "magick" was just an alternate Old English spelling, like "shoppe", but your explanation makes a lot more sense!

YES! you are dead on. his old stuff was waaaaay better. i hate his new "look at me starve myself in an ice block" crap.
I remember seeing him take a watch off of a guys hand, change the time and put it back on the guy without him even noticing. this guy was so shocked, looked like he was going to have a heart attack he really thought David magically changed the time.
plus he has some tricks i just can't figure out. like he made this guys name appear on a dollar bill, not in marker or anything, he made it part of the dollar, like in the ink. it was amazing.
 
Oooh! I thought Americans spelt it Magick, and English people spelt it Magic.
Becuase Giles has the Magic Box cuz he's English, but oh! I get it now lol 😀
 
LOL! I can actually see your logic there MS! I'm glad this thread was started because I always kinda wondered about the different spellings myself! Thanks guys! 😉
 
True ,the one pracised by Witches and Neo-Pagans is spelled Magick to make a difference with playing tricks.

My dictionary gives the definition of "git" as "a silly or contemptible person". It is a mild insult to us Brits - often( especially when I use it) light-hearted.
However, after digging around a bit (sounds like serious research - actually I picked up a different dictionary 🙂) I found an older meaning of "b*st*rd". I doubt that anyone would use the word to mean that now though. Although I suspect that it was the reason for The Monkees hit "Randy Scouse Git" being called "Alternate Title" over here. (Note for youngsters - The Monkees were a manufactured boy band from the '60's who made some rather wonderful pop records and actually turned out to have some talent after all - unlike most contemporary boy bands 😉)

I agree with you guys about Blaine - he used to be a very good illusionist/magician in his "Street Magic" days and very watchable but I stand by my "annoying git" assessment of him since he started doing these stupid stunts.

Lol, I just discover Blaine in an article from an american newspaper & I agree, he seems so silly, I mean, he said, "I don't do that for money, it's just that I feel like I have to do it !"

My feet !!! He won't make me believe that !!! Does he think that we r such idiot ?

I usually like magic, but not when it's sommink like starving in his cage, it's not magic, it's more to be in the guiness book !

& magick with a k, I would say the same, maybe it's coz it's wiccan magick ?

LOL - is that an English translation of a French colloquialism? I've never heard the expression before so thanks for making me laugh on my first day back at work after my holiday 😀

Never heard of that ? WhenI was in an english lesson once, the teacher told us that the translation of Mon oeil (my eye) in english, was my feet. I guess that this teacher was wrong coz each time i say this expression in english, nobody know it.
Anyway, in french we use a lot this expression to say i don't believe it.
& glad to make u laugh Mr pointy ! lol

You are right - your teacher was mistaken. "My eye" is used in English to mean that you don't believe something. I tend to use a much ruder expression though, which I couldn't possibly post - either in French or English 🙂

Anyway, thanks again for cheering me up. It's such a drag coming back to work from "les vacances".
 
OK Frenchy - as you asked so nicely.
Instead of "my eye" I would say "my arse" (In French = "mon cul" according to my French/English dictionary. In American = "my ass")
(BTW If anyone is interested, Caroline Aherne's wonderful BBC comedy show "The Royle Family" covers the use of the expression "my arse" in all of its incarnations)

Sorry Mummy, that naughty French girl made me say it 🙂
