Episode 4ADH09 | LONG DAY'S JOURNEY

After a group of totems linked to the ancient sun god Ra are killed by the Big Bad beast, Angel and his friends realize he's plotting to turn off the sun.

As Gwen Raiden (the electrically-charged thief) meets with one of her customers, Akinkuotu Ashet, the Big Bad doomsday beast lumbers in, flicks Gwen away, slams a fist into Ashet, extracts a small metal wing from inside his body, and walks out, leaving Ashet dead. Meanwhile, Cordelia has a vision of the Big Bad on some sort of battlefield. At the hotel, Wesley does some research and discovers the old/young girl the beast murdered at Wolfram and Hart was named Mesektet, and was one of five "totems" "“ known collectively as the Ra-Tet - associated with the sun god, Ra. Lorne reports that the beast also recently killed someone named Ma'at, whom Wesley confirms was another one of the Ra-Tet. Cordelia arrives and goes to talk to Angel, who's brooding in his office. He doesn't want to talk to her, but she tells him about her vision. Finally, he goes out to the lobby and tells the others it's time to go after the beast. But then Gwen arrives and tells them about Ashet's death. Wesley asks if the beast removed anything from Ashet's body, but Gwen lies and says no.

After Wesley confirms that Ashet was also a member of the Ra-Tet, they realize only two of the five totems "“ Manjet and Semkhet "“ are still alive, and both are probable targets. According to Wesley's books, Semkhet is a skinless sabertooth tiger, who lives in a cave in Death Valley. Angel and Gwen go to Death Valley and find the cave, but Semkhet is already dead, his body shredded. Angel says he can't figure out why the beast is killing the totems, but then a small man steps out of the shadows and says the beast is planning to turn out the sun. The man is Manjet ("Manny") "“ the last of the Ra totems "“ and he says the beast is collecting the articles he needs for his plan to plunge Los Angeles into permanent darkness"¦and turn it into an evil demon playground.

Angel and Gwen bring Manny back to the hotel and introduce him to the others, who also realize Manny's got to be the beast's next target. Gwen says she knows a place they can hide him, and takes the group to a run-down tenement, which the others are shocked to learn hides her very lavish lair. Inside, Gwen swings open a big bookcase, revealing a vault outfitted as a snug panic room. Manny gets settled and Gwen and Gunn take the first shift of guard duty outside the vault door. A few hours later, Angel and Cordelia take over. She suggests they use their time together to talk"¦but he refuses and they lapse into silence. A few hours later, Gunn and Gwen find Angel and Cordelia asleep "“ their drinks apparently drugged "“ and when they peek into the vault, all that's left of Manny is a bloody mess. The mess suggests the beast was looking for something in Manny's brain, and Angel remembers Gwen made a similar comment about Semkhet's remains.

Finally, she admits she saw the beast grab something out of Ashet's body. Cordelia asks how the beast could have drugged the drinks they made themselves, and Gunn remembers the beast saying earlier "the answer is among you," suggesting an inside job. Gwen suggests they review the tapes from the room's security cameras. But then they discover someone shut off the cameras just before Angel and Cordelia assumed their watch"¦which pretty much confirms a traitor in their midst. The group returns to the hotel, where Lorne shows them a picture of the sun-killing device the beast is building. The device uses three metal wings, which the beast took from three of the dead totems. Lorne notes the beast also sucked the energy out of the fourth totem, and the heart from the fifth, and must need those elements, too, for his plan.

Finally, Wesley and Fred say they've found out how to create a portal to suck the beast back where it came from, and even though the others are wary of portals, they agree it's their best hope. Just then, Cordelia has another vision of the beast talking to someone on a bloody battlefield, but she still can't see who it's talking to. Meanwhile, at Connor's place, the doorbell rings"¦and when he answers it, the beast is there. Connor tries to run, but the beast grabs him and tosses him out a window. He lands on the street, in front of Angel's car. Angel screeches to a stop, and when Connor says the beast is upstairs, they realize it must be preparing its sun-killing ritual. Leaving Cordelia to tend to Connor, the others go inside and find the beast just squeezing blood from the stolen heart onto a bright, clear orb.

As Angel and Gunn fight the beast, Wes and Fred chant the portal spell, while Gwen goes after the orb. But she drops it, the beast picks it up and resumes his chanting. Finally, Wes and Fred get the portal to open. Angel and Gunn push the beast into it and he's swallowed up"¦just as the sun dims outside. On the street, Cordelia and Connor note the premature night falling, and then Cordelia has the battlefield vision again, and realizes the person the beast is talking to is Angelus. Meanwhile, back inside, everyone starts to breathe a sigh of relief, but then the beast reappears across the room, asks "Angelus" to join forces with him, then grabs the orb, swallows it and leaps out a window. A few moments later, Cordelia and Connor enter, and Cordelia explains that she must have been seeing a memory of Angelus talking to the beast, not a vision of the future. Angel insists he doesn't remember knowing the beast, but the others realize it must be true"¦and that the beast must have some power over Angel makes him forget. Then, finally, Wesley says the only way to defeat the beast will be to get Angelus back.
