What would make Riley more interesting to those of you who think of him as a boring character?

If he was called Xander and got recruited in the Initiative in the summer between season 3 and 4.

I quite like Riley though.

They could have actually bothered to remember about him being a Psych TA after "Hush". 🙂

Lol, yeah, that just completey vanishes doesn't it? It's all about him being teen GI Joe after that.

Since I've come around a ot to Riley I'm going to have to think about this a little. Some continuity would've been nice (like the TA thing) and maybe his whole life needn't have revolved around his girlfriend... they could've given him more of a leg to stand on.

I think he might have interested me more if they hadn't made him Buffy's love interest and just made him a friend of the Scoobys and then either shipped him out after season 4 or made him pop up every few episodes. Or even every episode as an official Scooby member.

My problem is I didn't get to know Riley very well. All I know about him is linked to either Buffy and their relationship or the government. If I had gotten to know more about him without Buffy herself, I might have liked him.

He definately needed more of his own story, a' la Angel or Spike. Not necessarily that in depth, but something other than "I went to college. I am in the military. I date Buffy." End of story. Meh.

The character needed more depth. When writing a new major character, you better give them history, relations, family, more personal elements such as what they like, hate, fear, and also how does his personality affect his actions. Stuff like this. They hadn't deepen him enough as a character, he was too blank.
