Making t-shirts=illegal?

I want to either design a own t-shirt (only one, for me) or buy one like this but I wonder if it's legal to use copyrighted pics like that? Is it okay for me to make one for me? Illegal for them to make and me to buy?

I want to use a few fanmade pics (drawn art) on t-shirts but for those I'll ask, because it's the right thing to do, but I wonder if that's legal? It sounds legal, but what do I know.
 
I'm not sure if it's legal, but as long as you aren't selling the shirts, you could never get in any trouble for it. I make my own band shirts, I don't use photos, but I use the band's logos and such.
 
It is illigal if yu are making them on a site like zazzle or cafepress, if u buy iron on transfers, you can do whatever you want. It sounded like u were doing it online, that's why I said that
 
What confuses me about place like cafepress is that they have sections for tv shows etc. So my question is, if it's illegal how do they get away with that?
 
From what I know from cafepress, you can use quotes and the like from shows but you can't use copyrighted logos/designs/insignia/images from that show.

So while you could have a t-shirt that said "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" you could not have an image of Buffy on it nor can you have it written in the same way it is on the show.

There are a couple of things on cafepress that seem to push the boundaries a bit, that Dingoes Ate My Baby poster for instance, but mostly it is fan drawn stuff and quotes.
 
Yes, Kean, you're exactly right. You can have quotes from the show, and things with the characters' names on them, but you can't use their logo or any pictures of anyone on the shows.

Didn't the saving Angel campaign use the Angel logo on their products?

If they did, they could have gotten sued over it, but I guess maybe the show's producers thought "Hey they're trying to help us, let's leave it alone!"

I can almost guarantee you, though, that if the show had been doing really well someone would have forced them to stop using it. For instance, I made a shirt on CafePress that was a catchphrase from "Glee". It had a red and white megaphone on it and says "And that's how Sue C's it" and CafePress wouldn't approve the design, even though it still didn't include anyone's picture. Fox won't have any part of anyone making money off something they could be making the money from.

It doesn't say if they were using copyrighted pics or not, but maybe they were using shirts with pics of the firefly logo?

Oh I was hoping it wasn't illegal...I have been thinking of making a t-shirt with a pic from "buffy" on it...🙁
