(I just thought that someone out there might like to discuss something other than the Eternal Debate for awhile0

Do you think that, if the show had gone on as long as "Buffy" or "Angel" that Mal and Inara would have ever actually entered into the romantic relationship that they kept dancing around in the series and movie, or would they have continued to be pretty much the same throughout a longer run?

I think they would have eventually become a couple. Of course, it wouldn't have lasted long and it would have inevitably had a horrible ending with one of them dying and being sucked into some Hell-dimension, knowing Joss...
Actually, he probably would have made one of them get eaten by reavers.

YAY for your Spuffy banner!
I'm not sure that they would've ever become a couple.
But some sort of romantic night together (or whatever you like to call it 😉) was bound to happen sooner or later.

Of course, they would have become a couple. But I agree with Britt. They would have ended up badly. Either someone dying or breaking up because of their own ego. ^_^

I think they'd've slept together, and then she would have run off for a bit, and then she'd come back, and there'd be the dance again, and then they'd finally sleep together and she'd run off again...

I'd love for them to have got together, but at the same time I see Mal as a bit of a lone wolf, as Serenity will always be his first love. :]

I think they would have coupled up, there was just so much tension there... but like said - their relationship would probably have been doomed (what relationship in Whedon-verse isn't)
I mean though obviously caring for each other there were a lot of issues between them - her work, their egos, his personality (he tends to be a bit 'I am an island') - it would have been interesting to see them trying something on though.

Considering how Serenity ended, I'd say they end up being together, unoffically adopting River.

Yes and no. Maybe the two would have forever been a Mulder and Scully - always dancing around each other, burning with the sexual tension, all the while seeing other people while still carrying a torch for each other. Or, maybe they would have given up their stubborn pride and got together. Sadly, we'll never know.

So true. It was clear that they were hot for each other, but could they have sustained a relationship? Not likely. They were just so different...their ideologies, everything.

I just ended watching the series and immediately started looking for THIS thread.

Really great couple Mal and Inara. And as I watched the show episode by episode I kept saying "OK now they're gonna admit that they love each other and kiss and be happy yada yada yada"

But it never happened! Not even in the movie! I mean hell, even the doc got some action in the end... It was the only thing that bumped me in the entire show.

But indeed, if the show wasn't to be canceled, I am sure that Joss Whedon had a romantic ploy for the two of them (he showed us in both Buffy and Angel that he is really good at it).

If you look back at other hit tv shows that have a relationship between the two leads, when they get together, it ends the show. Take the tv shows Castle or Bones, if either of those couples get together how long will the show last? Because of the tension about them not getting together the shows works, so change that and goodbye show.
