Can a guy be born as a Slayer?
Technically I mean. Is there anything in the Slayer's gene that makes all Slayers born as females? I mean, could it have happened sometime in the history that a Slayer was born as a male? Or is there a chance there will be a male Slayer in the future?
What is the thing that determine that a Slayer is always a female?
 
I think they are always women because of the creation of the Slayer line, with a few men torturing a woman to put power in her. With those chamams crazy guys, the Council, the Slayer is always controlled by a masculine figure, so I guess only women can be Slayers. I guess men would be Vanhelsingian.

All kidding aside, I think the Shadowmen chose a girl because they were viewed as inferior to men back then, and would therefore be (presumably) easier to control and supervise. One could also make an argument that it had to do with women being naturally less aggressive than men. The Slayer line ran through young girls from thereon out.

I'm fairly certain it was Joss' idea, since it originated in the 'Fray' comic.

It seemed less likely to the Shadowmen that a girl would go mad with power and try to use her Slayer powers to conquer and defeat other things than those that goes bump in the night?


Or in the words of Faithy maybe girls are "just better at it"

I always wondered about this, haha. I get why the Shadow Men chose a young girl, but as the slayer line went on and the powers chose the girl, I wonder if the power is tied to biological sex, to gender or to both. My guess is both?
 
It was always meant that the Slayer would be female. The Shadow Men made sure of it, women back then were easier to control and they knew using a woman would work better than a man. They made sure it would stay that way throughout the generations of chosen Slayers.

The only incident in which a man sort of becomes involved is future Slayer Melaka Fray's twin brother who gets the passive side of the Slayers power because he is her twin. Whether that actually counts is another story.
 
The spell that the Shadowmen did specified a young female. The only exception is Melaka Fray's half-brother Harth. But no one would exactly call him a Slayer per se, KWIM? Although he got the knowledge & the dreams, she does the fighting.
 
I don't think we'll ever see a male slayer in the Buffyverse, because from the very beginning it's been about girl power, and as we saw in Chosen, all the Potential Slayers were female too.

It was a spell that led Slayers to be young and female.

I don't think we'll ever see a male slayer in the Buffyverse, because from the very beginning it's been about girl power, and as we saw in Chosen, all the Potential Slayers were female too.

It wasn't about girl power. Those shamans created the Slayer as a young female deliberately, because they believed it would be easier to control the Slayer due to the latter's age and gender.

I think HisMrs was talking about Joss' motivation for conceiving a girl Slayer. A male Slayer wouldn't fit in with his "turning the blonde ditzy stereotype on its ear". So he made the Slayer mythology fit. The world bending to Joss' will lol!

And yet . . . he added that origin tale for the Slayer line from "Get It Done" that leads me to view the Slayer line as a by product of misogyny and coercion. So, the whole "girl power" aspect no longer means anything to me. Unless Whedon decides to give the Slayer line a new origin in the comics.

I think it's about taking the power back. I actually like the concept that it doesn't matter where the power originally comes from but what you do with it. Buffy subverting the Council was a symbol of that: Power coming from subjugation but refusing to be subjugated. Power rooted in darkness but used for good.

Where they ruined it was by showing Buffy forcing the power on a bunch of unsuspecting girls.

It's not enough. I'm sorry, but it's not enough. The Slayer line needs to end, as far as I'm concerned. It can be renewed in a different form, one that requires choice and not coersion, or gender politics.
