Marsters, Knightley Voted Favorite Romeo and Juliet
James Marsters and Keira Knightley have topped the poll in the Royal Skakespeare Company's search for the nation's ideal pairing of Romeo and Juliet.

Actors James Marsters (of Buffy The Vampire Slayer) and Keira Knightley (Love Actually) have topped the poll in the Royal Shakespeare Company's search for the nation's ideal pairing of Romeo and Juliet. The online poll announced on the eve of Shakespeare's Birthday (23rd April), asked visitors to the RSC website who they would ideally like to see play Shakespeare's most famous lovers.
Over 2,000 people voted for over 150 different actors for both roles. James Marsters who plays Spike in the cult TV series Buffy The Vampire Slayer and Angel and is front man to the band Ghost of the Robot was a clear winner to play Romeo. Keira Knightley, star of hit movies Love Actually and Pirates of the Caribbean, pipped fellow film actors Kate Winslet, Nicole Kidman, Scarlett Johansson and Juliet Landau to the post to take on the role of Juliet.
Speaking from his Californian home James Marsters said: "I'm flattered and excited that people would think of me for the role of Romeo. I think that the themes of violence and social disintegration are as important today as they were in Shakespeare's day."
Keira Knightley added, "I am absolutely thrilled to have come top of the poll, particularly as Juliet is a role I would very much love to play in the future".
Other contenders for Romeo included Orlando Bloom, Ewan McGregor, Jude Law, Johnny Depp, Colin Firth and Ozzy Osbourne. Angelina Jolie, Vivien Leigh, Judi Dench, Audrey Hepburn, Vanessa Redgrave and Janet Street Porter were all in the running for the role of Juliet. The RSC's current Romeo and Juliet, Matthew Rhys and Sian Brooke, who will select the winning entrant, were also named in the poll.
James Bond and Lara Croft, Lee Evans and Ann Widdecombe, George Bush and Hillary Clinton, Alan Bennett and Thora Hird, Carrie Bradshaw and Big, and Brad Pitt and Juliette Binoche were among the pairings identified by voters. Some took a more subjective approach with answers such as "Ewan McGregor and 'me'".
