Funny you should mention flying foxes! I just found one in my washing!!!
Had a bunch of bunny rugs thrown over a chair on the patio. I shook them out to fold and this bloody bat fell out and smacked onto the concrete!
Scared the heck out of me, I thought it was a deformed mouse at first. Luckily my dogs are good at retreating when I start shrieking so I managed to pick it up into a plastic cone and held it in the sunshine. I thought it was a goner, barely breathing, floppy ears covering its eyes and it showed me all its teeth. I put it in a sunny garden bed and sorted the rest of my washing.
When I went to check on it again, it came to life and flew back on to my washing line. Im glad its alive! But then I freaked out cos it pooped on the patio and those things carry HENDRA. So washed the patio and the rugs are going back in the wash too.
Should I be planning for an earth quake now? I do have a go bag party to go to next week, do you think we can put it off til after that?

Speaking of earthquakes, were or even are, I dare say, you aware that my initial question was a tad unreal mainly when I stated about the earthquake hitting Perth as a total fallacy, because as you may know earthquakes do not hit places.

To be honest, Im not sure. I just remember a lady coming out with a vaccination for our horses at one of my old workplaces. She was trying to convince us that if we didnt have the horses vaccinated against hendra every six months, then we were all going to die and put our horseriding clients at risk. That was on the outskirts of perth and I didnt think we had hendra there.
But then, I didnt think we had many bats here either! First one I have seen up close. There are SO many birds that I wouldn't be able to tell the difference anyway if they are flying. Im glad it was ok, but I hope it flies back to the bush rather than stick around here.

I'm surprised to hear Australia has earthquakes. I didn't think it was tectonically active! Lucky it was just a 2.9, but even little ones can do damage if you aren't prepared.

Australia does have quite a few earthquakes, the last one over here (W.A.) was just 5km under the surface.

The UK isn't tectonically active and we have still had earthquakes over 5.0! Most, though, are too faint for humans to detect.
Looked a bit like this. Definitely a microbat of some sort, I thought it was a mouse at first. I didnt think we had hendra here either but that lady was from some fancy government department and was very adamant it was a risk. It was just after a bunch of deaths over east so people were scared at the time.
Even without the threat of hendra, they are little germ gremlins and I dont want my dogs near them! Kinda terrifying to know the local cats probably eat them, what kind of diseases do they have now!
No earthquake yet tho...
We have heaps, but only little ones. Wasnt too long ago there was an earthquake in Gnowangerup that destroyed a few houses like mine. I duno if it made the news, no one really cares haha. Its hard to know sometimes if its a road train/truck or a tremor. They are that small.
The tremors are much scarier for the miners. Kalgoorlie seems to always be moving a little bit. The mines closer to me are all open cut so less scary when the earth moves. They set up a monitoring station at lake muir and even the scientists were surprised by how many they pick up.

This has nothing to do with earthquakes, but I wanted to ask about an Australian-ism, and figured this might be the place. I went to an art exhibit of works by Australian indigeneous people, and one artist repeatedly referred to the "salt water estate" he lives on. Googling just got me links to a particular housing development with that name. So I'm asking the Aussies for a definition, please?
