Way before they announced about season 8, and right after season 7 - then the final canon season - I remembered Buffy and Spike's conversation where Buffy tells Spike that the night they spent together meant something to her. Spike asks her what does it mean and she said "does it have to mean something?" then afterwards, Buffy says: "maybe when..." And it's obvious that she meant that maybe after the fight they might be a couple, a real couple. that's what I understood anyway.

So my question here is, do you think or want to believe that if Spike hadn't died then, after the fight, they would have started dating for real?

I think that eventually, they might have. But it's a Whedon story so... Something would have gotten in between. Maybe something cruel Hellmouth-y, or maybe something that normal couples deal with.

I can't remember many details from season 7, but Joss did say Buffy loved Spike when they clasped hands, and Buffy let it slip earlier that season that she had loved Spike (folding laundry with Willow), so maybe they'd date.

I think the rape thing might have kept them apart though and maybe they didn't want to break the peace. What they had at the end of season 7 was pure, innocent. Adding sex to that might have made it weird, dirty, specially since they didn't have the best sexlife pre-soul, and they might not have gotten past that awkwardness. Buffy might have felt to filthy, and Spike might not have dared to make the first move.

I want you to know, that I'm going to reply to your pm from last night. I just have some things to do and want to put thought into my response, so hang tight. Not ignoring you. :)

yea. i agree with most of that
My intention was them having a real relationship, not based on sex, but a real loving, dating, kissing relationship. But me personally, think they'd wait with the sex till they're ready to make that move, so it wouldn't feel not right.

I like that :)
I think so. If they had both survived and there had been a televised season eight, I think we would have seen their relationship progress from what we saw at the end of season seven, definitely.

But, alas, that didn't happen.

Oh well, there's always fanfic. 🙂

I got that when I read your post. When I said "date", I meant emotionally and physically. Not sure if they would be able to go back to mainly being physical again (which I think their season 6 relationship was mainly about, even if Spike wanted differently).

I think they had, at least emotionally, started to get in date mode, but like I said, adding sex to that, or just the idea that "we're dating now, some day well have sex", might be too awkward for them to be able to date succesfully. I'm not sure they'd ever get pass their past to be able to build a solid future together. Specially since their days would be filled with Hellmouth-y crap, thus not creating the best date friendly enviroment.

I agree. I always thought the "Maybe, when..." meant when the fight was over they could work out what was happening between them. I certainly think they were on the road to an acknowledged commited relationship throughout season seven and if there had been a season 8 this would have been developed further.

I found a lost original transcript that elaborates on what Buffy was gonna say; here it is.

BUFFY
Maybe when...
(Buffy pauses before continuing)
...maybe when Joss finally decides to get off the fence like a little girl trying to sneak out of school; you and I will finally get our own "spinoff" where we open a detective agency and well be blissfully happy and they could call the show Moonlighting.

P.S. Extra points to anyone who remembers Moonlighting.

Ha! I'm actually just finishing up research paper comparing Moonlighting to Bones. And now I feel like I should get back to it instead of procrastinating on the Buffy-Boards...

yay...extra points for me being old😀 Isn't that like THE reason now why no "will they/won't they" couple is EVER allowed to become "they did?"

As I've said several times before, I have no doubt whatsoever that if there had been a televised Season 8 and Spike had remained on the show rather than moving over to "Angel," we would have seen a genuine romantic relationship develop between Spike and Buffy. That's assuming, of course, that that meddling sadist Whedon didn't do what he seems to enjoy doing so much, which is to place some sort of insurmountable barrier between the two. Joss just seems to have a total aversion to the phrase, "Happily ever after."

There was no doubt in my mind they could have made it and been together then Joss ruined it 😛
On a serious note I do think they would have been a couple in the sense of the Buffyverse. The emotional bond they formed over season seven really makes me think Buffy would have given him a chance they had grown so much by this point so when she says that line I take it as they had a shot.

They definantly would have been together! I never understood why when spike came back to life he didn't go running to buffy. he deeply dissappointed me, but then again, i did love seeing him in angel 🙂 i always love seeing blondie bear 🙂
but joss seems to have some kind of issue with couples being happy and not breaking or dieing. think about it. joss would have broken them up in some way.
i think if buffy and spike had got together, oner storyline the writers might have explored is the scoobies' reactions-that would have been interesting to see.

I think, if there had been a televised season 8, that they would've been a couple...however, it would eventually have to end. Spike will never get older, Buffy will. I just don't see them having a happily ever after as it is.

I think that for sure (if it wasn't for a meddleling Joss), we would have seen a mature, full-on relationship between Buffy and Spike if the show had continued. I can see them dating, being romantic, and getting physical as well. I don't see anything that would emotionaly prevent them from giving their all in this "season 8" relationship. I mean, everything that happened between them that was bad, happened pre-soul. Buffy knows that Spike is practically a different person, and he shouldn't be held completely responsible for everything he did and said back then. Of course, it would *never* be allowed to have them in a happy relationship for more than 10 episodes without it ending in death or something horrible like that, so I'm almost happy that Spuffy ended as it did, with so much love, passion, trust, and understanding. 😀

I don't know about that. There was the conversation with Angel about how she wasn't ready for anyone yet, and how it could possibly be him, too. I just don't know that a real relationship could work with Buffy and Spike. She loved the secretiveness of what they did in s6, even though it disgusted her. I think they had worked through some problems and become really amazing friends, but I think that's all they could really be. I think a real relationship might be a bit much to handle.
