My personal fav big bad. I think it's terrifying to have a villian in a position of power. You give me an evil genious cooped up in a cave, okay, but where does he get his resources, what are his connections? If the whole Mayor thing isn't scary enough, he's also a beloved leader. A feared leader will eventually lose his post because nobody wants to live in fear of a leader. But the people of Sunnydale love him, if Buffy earlier had stood up and said "This is a bad man" no one would beleive her. Add in the fact that he's genuine, that when he's taking pictures with boy scouts or giving a lecture on the importance of community, that is a real smile on his face. That's just creepy, in the way that dolls and little children can be creepy, creepy.
 
I love the face that he is in power and therefore not many people are gonna think that the mayor is associated with vampires etc, although we got hints dropped at the end of season two when Snyder calls the mayor to tell him about buffy. Not many people would think the mayor also because he has been the mayor in sunnydale for a while and as he had to wait for a certain day to change, so he couldnt make his move until then.
One thing i always loved about him tho was that he was the big bad yet he was always worried about germs! lol
 
He´s creepy, it´s a short opinion, I know xD But I like him, he seems to have feelings, creepy feelings, but true feelings xD
 
He is my favorite big bad. i don't think he gets enough credit. i also think he's the most dynamic and interesting of all of them. There is a bit more going on than just "crush, kill, destroy".
 
I never thought he was terrifying at all.. he was darn funny though! One of me favs as well.. actually might be my favorite, since you cant really call Caleb the Big Bad. No, no. He IS my favorite. Wow. Learn something everyday.
 
He is by far my favourite big bad. Only Ethan rivals him if include minors as well. No hellgod, vamps, cyborgs, witches or even First Evil can beat him in that 😛 Hard to say why, i just love how he behaves. Charming while evil so to speak. Terrifying not so much altough.
 
He's pretty psychotic with the cleanliness, that's pretty creepy. Not terrifying, but a great big bad, many layers, like an onion.
 
The mayor is tied for my favorite big bad. He's not terrifying, but a villain with resources, one that has an alter ego that is a pillar of the community...thats nurse ratchet stuff and makes for some scary ideas.

I liked the mayor too much to be afraid of him though. i wish they would have done more with him during the season, but I guess that goes against the grain for his arch type of master manipulator/untouchable...well right up to the snake part at least.

i enjoyed the father daughter stuff with Faith, the glimpse into his head when he talked about his wife and pretty much in my opinion single handedly broke up Angel and Buffy, kinda for what he believed was their own good...

Had the makings of a complex, fun character. Totally the opposite of Adam, who due to Frankenstein fanboyism, is my tie for favorite. But for totally different reasons.
 
I have to say that, of all of the Big Bads created by Joss, Mayor Wilkins is no doubt my favorite. Not only is he an evil soul-less monster with a secret agenda which includes taking over the hellmouth and all of its evil potential, but while doing so, he manages to stay charming, articulate, friendly, outgoing, and genuinely loyal and protective of his associates and friends. The most obvious example is, of course, his sincere father/daughter feelings for Faith, perfectly paralleling the Buffy/Giles relationship. Wilkins is the kind of person who you would enjoy having Sunday dinner with, or going bowling with on wednesdays. He's the kind of guy who you wouldn't hesitate to come to for help in a time of need, and even more importantly, he's the kind of guy who would almost certainly make a sincere effort to provide that help. He's everybody's best bud. He just has an evil agenda that includes becoming a giant snake and subjugating the world to his evil plans. But he's charming throughout the entire process, right up to the point where he becomes a giant snake and eats Principal Snyder for an appetizer.
 
He wasn't my favorite big bad and when i was watching him i didn't really like him. But looking back i can see how he was really pretty creepy and i wouldn't want to get on his bad side becuase i have a felling he would turn on you pretty quickly. I also liked that he was nice and charming and the public really didn't have a clue what he was like really,that's genius!
But when he turned into a snake i was like....oh dear..very bad CGI.
 
i loved the man thing whatever he was... and his clingfilming his cookies.... and the way he says "jim dandy" i dunno he's just *ooooh* like the way i am with adrian monk, only i LOVE monk
 
He actually really creeps me out in Graduation Day when he walks into the library and says "that's a spunky girl you've raised... I'm going to eat her" (ok im quoting from memory, sorry if its off). but yeah he creeps me OOOOUT with that line.

Mayor Wilkins was terrifying 'cause he was so happy about being evil. He was completely psychotic and completely right about a lot of his insights. Plus, anyone who's got the balls to try to kill Angel when he's seen what he can do has got BALLS. Go Mayor Wilkins! 😀
 
I think he would've been more terrifying if they kept the quirkyness down to a minimum. I respected the fact that he was evil and playing the 'hero' during the day and that has a big creepy factor to it, but to say terrifying is going too far, I think. What I don't get is he didn't get invulnerable until after he ate the gravlocks or whatever it was and they didn't do anything to prempt any evil he was going to do. Okay, so he's human... lock his a$$ in a cage somewhere... 😀 In retrospect, there was a lot that could've been prevented but in loyalty to the show and to the continuation of drama, I forgive it. Again, tone down the quirky and add a little more sinister then he would've been tops!! 😀

...which brings up the question of just how powerful Wilkins really was. We never saw him fight (much to undignified!) as a human, and we only saw him angry when he was concerned about Faith's safety, but he just always struck me as a far more dangerous character than was ever really shown. He certainly had his gang of vampires under control, and that would have to take more than a small amount of physical skill. It might have been fun to see him tangle with Buffy or Angel at some point, just to see how bad he really was.

I agree! It would have been totally badass to see Mayor Wilkins throw down!
 
I never really found him terrifying except when he made the comment about eating Buffy that prompted Giles to slice him in half...that just seemed so cold compared to his usual friendly yet creepy demeanor. That really sent chills down my spine...
