Meaning of Life

Jolly, although i agree with the life is what we do with it sentiment, i must say i dont agree DEATH is the meaning of Life. A natural constant as it is, is not a definition of us beings, but a final rest for our lives(or if you believe the doorway to a new level of existence).
There are many things in life that are constant, such as aging or American networks cancelling great TV.....just because these are constants in LIFE doesnt mean they define it....
 
Try to find something else that define a human being.

I don't really know what I'm saying only that I do know that that is the only thing we can be sure of and therefor it has to at least have some type of meaning, perhaps even the meaning with life itself.

I don't believe in an afterlife, but in a Hitchhikeresque way I'd say the answer is death. Now all we have to figure out is what it means.
 
JollyApe... one could also argue that "loneliness" is the one true binding factor of all human existence. Although we can be together with people all the time, in our mind there exists only one person.
 
Not completeley pointless. However that's more of a reality thing than a meaning. How can we be sure that anything besides our minds exist? Brings the question of meaning with life to a completely new level.
 
I once sat in on a discussion on the theory of time travel(or perception of) and one particular version that has the most realistic way of becoming a reality.
If you have ever seen Star Trek you will know of a function room known as the 'holodeck'.
Its surmised by the brains on high that one day this technology will be a reality, and in that time you will be able to experience any time period. But the thing that links with JA's last question, the "How can we be sure that anything besides our minds exist?" is the fact that those devices will able to create a replica of the world and its inhabitants. But more to the point, they will be programmed so perfectly that they believe themselves true 'flesh and blood' they believe the world real, they believe they have a future, when infact the only person or people that do, are the ones running the programme, and they are about to switch it off.......

Hmmmm....interesting?

Computer.......End Programme.
 
And we should not forget the Matrix. Somehow I can't help feeling as if were heading off track, but then again reality and our conception of it very much ties in with what we believe to be the meaning of life.
 
We're most certainly digressing, but it's not of the bad variety. I agree that á la Matrix or Holodeck, "reality" is something very subjective. However, does (our conception of) reality actually influece what we're (supposed) to do with it?
 
Well yes and no.
No IF you are looking for each persons own perception, own meaning to life. The faux person still has goals, dreams, values and 'life'(even in this limited way) and if they are unaware of the fact they are not real, then they still have there own existence to work from.
However the meaning of life for the 'community' is changed massively. In this simulated environment, the only meaning en masse is to be studied, to be viewed, they have no future, no past, there is no essence to the life of the subject.
Even bacterium in a petrie dish hold more of a meaning to existence then the creations, because at the end of the day, those simulated are nothing more then the workings of someone else, no matter how detailed, they are still programmed, still influenced by someone else on a grander scale.

But then we could all be coming from the wrong direction, maybe we are thinking this through to hard. Here a quote from one of my favourite movies about how we cam into existence....

This is not an occult science. This is not one of those crazy systems of divination and astrology. That stuff's hooey, and you've got to have a screw loose to go in for that sort of thing. Our beliefs are fairly commonplace and simple to understand. Humankind is simply materialized color operating on the 49th vibration. You would make that conclusion walking down the street or going to the store.

Actually, I think that's a pretty good one Ape (I *can* call you that, right 😉). I thought about that option to. There is no clear-cut answer to why we are here, but the never-ending search to the answer does give life a certain sense of purpose.
