media essay on a buffy character

For my media coursework, i have to write an essay on a buffy character and say like what themes do they have that may influence teenagers, arguments about the traits etc.

does this make any sense?
If anyone has any good ideas, i want to do fauth, but can't think of many things, for buffy i can think of like is she a good role model, is she masc/feminine, how do the problems she has with dealing with her monsters relate to problems in our lives etc.

If anyone has any good ideas about faith or even spike that would be cool. 🙂
 
What might be an interesting way to do this would be to use both Faith and Buffy in Season 3, then you could concentrate on the theme of growth.

Growth and preparing for the world after high school is one of the major themes of Season 3.

You could show the positive growth in Buffy versus the negative in Faith, explaining the external pressures on both, and the choices each made. Eg. Buffy chose a positve role model Giles. Faith chose the mayor. Why? What does either choice say about how Buffy or Faith is preparing for the future? What can they expect from their choices?
 
Yeah,thats a really good idea,you could also say how Buffy (In Bad Girls) ended up seeing that Faith's whole attitude towards the Slayer thing was wrong...*decides to shut up*
 
Another thing you could do is once you decide on the basic premise of your essay, you could post a thread on it here.

For example, suppose you chose the idea I suggested. You could post a thread saying something like, "Did Faith really have any choice in who she was about to become, or was it inevitable that the pressures around her would push her to the dark side?". In this way you'll get ideas.

Also you could go to TVTome and download the Season 3 episode guide. Start reading each episodes blurb, and you'll find all kinds of support for whatever arguement you decide to make.
 
thanks for that idea, i might do that. just thinking tho about media ideas/arguments that people have made, such as feminists etc. Just trying to see if i can find any to fit in with this.
If any of you are good at this kind of thing, maybe you know some.

can anyone think of any ideas for spike?
i was thinking about spike and his growth through the seasons, redemption etc.
 
Willow and Cordy had a lot of growth as well.

Spike well you could do from William the Bloody Awful Poet to Spike, to Chipped Spike to Souled Spike. Could dicuss how the outside factors in his life affected his personalities (he didn't choose to be a vampire, nor did he choose to be chipped, however he chose to be re-ensouled) and how that reflects how changes and actions in society affects us. You could whack in some historical content by saying Spike's development is a mirror to society. In ye olde days you were expected to court women and look after your parents (William), then it became more about yourself and doing what you wanted (Spike) around 1950s (think maybe during the war, not sure) and then the sensitive "new man" of today (souled/chipped).

I'm doing my coursework on postmodernity in television with reference to Buffy.
 
Ok...coming back to Anya here...but I dont really care...lol...
I doubt you'll use her, but anyway, here goes...
I think Anya really represents teenagers...which is kind of ironic, because she's 1120 years old, but I think that makes it much more interesting.
With Anya, you have so many things to, dig deep into...
Her confusion of the world represents the confusion of teenagers today, for example, their first family death, you start asking questions, like ''Why has this happened?'' ''Where have they gone?'' and so on....which was mainly poked at in 'The Body' when Anya was confused about Joyce's death...
Anya also likes to experiment with things in her life, for her, its mostly with money, and buisness oppertunities and things like, for teenages, some like to experiment with smoking, sex, drugs and/or alcohol.
And in Chosen mostly, she represents what most teenagers want to be 'A hero' or at least those kind of teenagers like me who respect Anya so much, as you all know, that she faced her fears and dealt with them...which is another point relating to teenagers...we all have fears as teens, maybe to do with sex, or even kissing, and she taught us (well, she taught me anyway) in order to conquer your fears, you have to face them head on, and deal with consequences, which I guess was the main point or theme of Buffy...

I don't know if this has already been said because I have to go and don't have time to read all the replys but for a Faith thing you could talk about how she was evil then changed. Like it's never too late to change your attitude... Or something... I don't know.... I'm dumb.... I'm mental.... I'm weird... i'm going to hide.

Media would be TV, Films, Newspapers, Journals, Advertising, Marketing and maybe other things like online media but varies.

The Faith/Buffy s3 thing is a very good idea! I'd do that if I were you!
Or you can on Faith, maybe write about how making a wrong choice will affect the rest of your life, and how hard it is to come back from the dark side...
And Spike...His struggle in s4-s6 about trying to be evil, but that doesn't work, and trying to be good, but that doesn't work either. And he doesn't really know where he fits in any more, and then there's the whole thing about how loving someone can change who you are, and what you do.

I don't really have many ideas...But it's close to 1 am here, so I have a little excuse!

Personally I would show the different spectrum of vampires in tv and film. You've got the mindless vampires of the early horror movies, the romanticized versions in movies like Interview With A Vampire and the point in the middle which is the Buffyverse version.

I think it would be interesting to look at all these types (with specific examples) and how they differ.

The "mindless" type are often shown as only knowing the "hunger," they think of nothing except their next kill.

While the romanticized versions, popularized by Bram Stoker and Anne Rice, are portrayed as highly intelligent and in many cases as better than human (ie. Anne Rice). They are also sometimes portrayed as heroes (also Anne Rice).

Then you have the middle ground which is the Buffyverse, where most of the vampires are evil, but some aren't. Also they can be sort of looked at as an opposite representation of the human species, where "most" are good and few are evil. They also have human faces and are generally portrayed as a form of possession by the demon.
