Media Player - .avi file?

I have an .avi file that I opened in Windows Media Player, but when it plays, I can only hear the audio, there is no picture. Do I maybe have a corrupt file of some sort or is it something else?

It sounds like you dont have the correct codec, id try downloading DivX media player, that will install the codec aswell.

Alrighty, I can try. I opened it in another program, so now I know it's not the file. Thanks for your help 🙂

I recommend that everyone should use the VLC media player. It will play pretty much anything you chuck at it, if the file is OK - no need to mess around with codecs etc. As someone once said, after I made the same recommendation elsewhere: "It's the media player that God uses" 🙂

VLC has done some crazy things with audio for me in the past, but that aside, that baby will play anything.

Almost on topic, can anybody recommend a decent free .FLV converter? I'd been using Super C on another computer, and I loved it very much, but I find myself in need of an alternative because it apparently hates Vista. Preferably one that doesn't leave a big annoying splash logo telling you to buy the full version..

Apparently VLC will convert files from .flv to other formats.

How to convert .FLV(Flash) to .WMV, .AVI or any other format?

Here's some other free alternatives. They aren't all programs. Some are sites where you download and convert at the same time. You might have to fiddle around bit to find the one that works for you.

Aha, thus betraying my relative noobness to the wonderful world of VLC.

Yup, that's the Super I'd been using. It crashed annoyingly now and then, if I gave it too much work to do, but other than that, I'd recommend it. Ugly as sin, but neat.
