Meeting online people.

I've thought about it alot but ultimately, at least for now, my answer is no. I was tempted by the London trip but the more I think about it the less if feels right. That is no disrespect to any people taking part in the London meet up because I have great time for you all. I am incredibily fond of the people fo BB, it is our community that keeps me coming back here. However, there is no way my friends and family would understand or feel comfortable with me meeting people from the net. I'm a grown woman, I support myself, I could easily go anyway but I hate lying and this is something I couldn't lie about. In fact I wouldn't lie about it and I have to be honest I would be unbelievably apprehensive if any of my family or friends were too meet people from the net.

In saying that there are people I simply adore here and I feel like at some stage we will meet but it will be a long time off.

I'd say that most of the people on here are probobly pretty normal, like me, and just enjoying talking about their favrotie show with other fans 🙂 But yes, I soppose there could be some wierdos on here. I imagine though, there's no harm in meeting in public in a group setting. I mean, I wouldn't give anyone online my real address or anything, but hey most people wouldn't.

I'm always very cautious about who I meet online in person, I've done it in the past but only if I feel I really trust thst person is telling the truth. Never meet anyone through a chat room I've never been on those and never will, I've always trusted forums more. Still that doesn't mean something bad can happen, when I met my old friend I had spoken to her for a good nine months prior on MSN. We ended up meeting on holiday in Helsinki a few years back and went with about 10 others all from a forum and it was very well organised.

I think if you've spoken to someone online for quite a while and have their Myspace or Facebook pages and plan and proper meet up where you feel comfortable enough to say yes then go for it. But if you feel something isn't quite right then don't go, you never know it might turn out nasty or a complete disaster. So when it comes to meeting people online its mostly down to instincts and trust.

My social life happens on the net and, occasionally, over the phone, and I don't see any reason to change that. And the fact that the one woman I did plan to meet offline - that was 2 years ago - turned out to be pathologically lying didn't help either. 😉 Well at least I found that out before we actually did meet... guess she did enough damage as is.

I don't think meeting a GROUP is the same as one on one by any shakes. Can't even compare it.

My old boards, BuffyUk, had a Stakehouse party in Birmingham in I think 2001? There must have been about 40 of us. That was fun, and it was great to put faces to names. I was a shy retiring wallflower at the event and hardly spoke, just observed a LOT (had had a very recent bad experience which tainted the event somewhat) but many of them, including the person I went with, had met previously on Nosferatu nights in Pages bar in Westminster. A few of us met again at a Buffy fancon in 2002, where I was a bit more sociable, but needless to say, it did feel odd, meeting online people for the first time.

However I generally don't do well in large groups. And I always come across more batty than I am (or as batty as I am and those who have known me a long time are just used to it) so just bear with me guys.... I don't bite. Well, not at the weekends 😉

I think you have to go with your gut instinct meeting people individually. You can't hold it against someone just because you met them on the internet. Yes, they may be a granny from Wisconsin, but there are ways of gaining trust without putting yourself at risk. And you may be turning down the best friend you will ever have, just because of how you met. So I ask myself this. If you met them in a pub, or through a friend, or at a gig, would you hit it off? If the answer is yes, you just have to go with the flow, after taking all the neccessary precautions...

I have had a few disasters meetin people of the net (1 lied alot, 1 stalker). But I have also made 3 friends. I would never say never as people you meet in real life can be nutters as well as online nutters!

I am looking forward to the BB London meet but am very nervous - will i live up to peoples expectations of me, does anyone actually want to meet me, etc. I love putting faces to names, alothough the names thing will be weird lol..

Ah! I love meeting online people *_* It´s soooooo exciting, all the awkwardness, the babbling.. it´s always fun! xD That absolutely freezing nervous feeling, like you can´t walk, talk or whatever... I love it!
I met aound 4 friends, 1... don´t know, affair? lol, I went to a mass meeting (not murder, FbF) with 6 or 7 friends from a online RPG, and I think I´ll meet 6 friend from MMORPG I play, this Réveillon! *_*

Love love love, wish I could meet all of you.. but it´s kinda far 😀

You were at the Stakehouse party....so was I! I was a member of BuffyUk and am still in touch with a lot of the members who I consider to be some of my best friends.

I joined after meeting EvilWillow at a convention and she invited me to join and I never looked back. I met a girl in the Buffy.com chat room and we chatted for months and I went to the con with her in London.

I've even travelled to New York to meet Buffy Summers and a few other staff members. The trick is to be sure, I spoke to them on the phone for at least a year before hand and everything was in public. As much as you have to be careful you can't let it stop you, as long as you tell people where you are going and keep in touch with them.

Same with FrenchFaith and Elmo, I don't see as much of them as I would like but Elmo stayed with me quite a bit and i've stayed with her too.

I am hoping to get to the London meet but only time will tell on that one. As much as I do like meeting people from the net I always pick the people carefully, they are people i've clicked with straight away and have had no 'niggles' about.

Safety is paramount people. We do our best to ensure that you guys have a safe community here and if you are ever unsure of anything or someone the please come to us 🙂

Joan the Vampire Slayer agrees: Aww. You're gay? too bad. I was going to ask you to marry me... Why you gotta go and break my heart? Hehe I love cyber crushes.
LOL...the purpleness and poofiness and Cordelianess and Paris Hiltoness didn't give you a little hint? 😀

Was that the Eclipse con in 2002 with Charisma Carpenter? I remember you at the Stakehouse party with Evil Willow, MoNsTeR and was it Morpheus? Incandenza? VelvetGlove and Pegasus? I think you had on a short skirt..... and chunky boots? Maybe, perhaps... Fairly sure you were one of the youngsters getting hammered on the sunday in the pub though!

No it was the one before that with James Marsters. lol that wasn't me with the short skirt and boots, I was the Scottish one that was indeed in the pub getting hammered. I mostly hung with SaraAngel (the german girl) as well as EW, Mon, Peg, Inc and Morph (i've still not managed to shake Morph), Stoo. I didn't really know many of them my first time round only Evil Willow and through her met the rest.

Did you go to the Nos nights at Pages?

I actually never really met someone I knew from anywhere internet-ish in real life. I'm not that big on social networking so I don't even know that many people from forums and so on. If everything goes right, London is going to be my very first time.
Or maybe second, since I'm currently talking a lot with a guy I met via last.fm. He lives in Eindhoven which is quite near Maastricht, but he's never been here before. So now I live here he wants to combine going to the oldest city in the Netherlands and meeting me for a coffee and a spliff. It could be fun and I haven't said no or anything, it just hasn't happened yet. We talked a lot on msn messenger, with webcam and all, so if he still turns out to be a 50 year old guy, I might want to hire him to check out my computer. But 24 year olds can also be bad news, so I will definitely insist to meet in a public place ^^

Smeermaas sounds public enough. It's even got a Brasserie ^^
I agree with the statement that it's a whole different thing when you're meeting as a group. One on one, as in a date atmosphere, is something I probably would never do again, one reason being because I'm married and I'm not interested with flirting or meeting up with anyone one-on-one in a romantic sense. But if something ever happened between me and my hubby I would definitely not go looking for love on the Net, 'cause of the experiences I had before in my teens and now seeing my mom doing it grosses me out. LMAO

As a group, I'd LOVE to meet up with people who love Buffy as much as me. 😀 I only have a couple of friends who watch the show and like it, and even they are not as nerdy about it as I am. LOL So I'd be incredibly excited to sit down with people and analyze eps and stuff. I'd be all for it, for sure!

Nah, we are not nerdy, we are just extremely interested ;)
I met someone I met on MySpace today...it went just fine. I don't usually do stuff like that, but, when you think about it, it's can sometimes be a lot easier to really get to know someone over the computer, because you can take your time and usually people are willing to share more about themselves. You should always be safe about it, but I don't think it's as big of a deal as some people would have you think.

totally agree, but sometimes I think that's just cos to meet people that I haven't already gotten to know ;)
As TK said, we met each other - I travelled to Sweden to see him. But I would never meet someone from online unless I had seriously thought about it first, and I thought I could trust the person.

Me and TK built up a lot of trust through our msn talks. Very long 10 hour talks or we would just stay up all night. We were brainsharing buddies, we knew what the other was going to say, it was great.😀 But I know online and irl is different, for many reasons. I didn't jump into this, I considered it carefully before booking the plane tickets.

But the situation was as I imagined and TK is one of the genuinely nicest people I've ever met. I felt like I was meeting an old friend, it was just the best.
