Have you ever met anyone off the internet, if not would you? What about internet dating, how long would you leave it after meeting someone online for you meet them in real life?

I've met several people from the internet and loved it, I have no problem with meeting them in the real world after getting to know them a bit.

Well I've met quite a few people from BB over the years and made some excellent friends. I've also just met someone off a dating site and so far so good. Chatted to him for a month before we met.

Just recommend as the staff will also that you are careful when meeting people in real life and dont get your hopes up that they will be just what you imagine them to be and all should go well 🙂

Yeah I agree, also make sure someone knows where you are, just in case things do go wrong.

I've never dated online, but I have met up with some people I've started talking to online. I've never regretted it, but I've also made sure to meet in public places and told someone where I would be. You never know.

I think the internet is a great place to get to know people. I've also grown closer to some friends by communicating them online.

I got to wave real quick at someone from here. That was awesome!!! Other than that I have no experience meeting people in real life from the internet. I would very much love to. 🙂

I'm incredibly cautious about it. Some of my favourite people in the world are people I met in fandom. My best friend in the world is Lyri, who I obviously met here. We have spoken 24/7, seven days a week, for the last 4 and half years, but we only just met face to face last month. Considering all that separates us is a 5 hour drive, I think that says a lot about how wary we both are about meeting people from the internet.

Would I meet other people? Yes, but those that I would really want to meet (and trust not to be lunatics) is a very small group of people. I could probably count them on one hand.

I haven't and hope I never shall. One person I met on the internet lives like...an hours drive away from me, but I would never want to meet them. We thought we went to the same school at one point. That was awkward. 😛

I have an aunt that used to live with someone she met online though.

I met my husband on the internet. It was an online community kinda like this one, except it was a Final Fantasy forum. (I'm a nerd, yes, I know 😛)

I think I have met a couple more people too. I have no problems with it.

I have. Not something I thought I'd ever do. Went alright but it was easier for me since she came visiting me and would stay at my place. I know what kind of person I am and that she would be safe. Seeing it from her perspective and the ones close to her it was a different thing. All in all we met up maybe 5, 6 times more. Did we do everything the best way the first time? Sadly no.

The downside of the internet is that anyone can pretend to be someone completely different than tbey are. We all know it happens and some are getting into serious trouble.

The online anonymity can also be an advantage. You feel more secure and can be more honest and open than you'd be in real life. Which mean you can know a person better if you've talked to them a lot. The keyword being of course can. Don't take anything for granted. Not even when it comes to people you've mer in real life. I'd never understood how so many think it's ok to do whatever just because you've met someone face to face. It doesn't have to be safer.

The problem is that you never know beforehand. So being careful and open about it is necessarry. Trying to hide it sets off alarms like nothing else. Listen to advice. "We" often think it doesn't apply to us. It's eveyone else that need to be careful. I know what I'm doing. From the past we know that someone is always wrong.

The Internet can be a great place to meet people, but it can also be very dangerous. If you do decide to meet people you should be cautious and make sure to take precautions to ensure your safety.

I have one friend that I have met on the internet that I've also met in real life, we get along and became friends because we work in the same field in the same city.

For the most part I am very wary about meeting people on in RL who I've met on the Internet. I've heard one too many horror stories about it to be comfortable about it. Although a large BB meet up would be very tempting. 🙂

A large BB meet up would be AWESOME. I've met up with a couple of people I met on MySpace when I was about 15, but it was always people I had mutual friends with and who lived nearby. I would never do online dating, I think I'd be very cautious about that.

I've never met any internet people before, but there are a handful of BBers that I trust and would love to meet one day. So I'm totally open to meeting people I meet online, but only if I've talked to them a lot and know them well so I can trust them. And of course I'd meet them in a public place. Not just because it's safe, but also because it'd be less awkward I think. 😛

I started chatting once to a girl and later I met her in puplic. I knew her just from hearing my friends talking about her. It was quite fun but after some time I realized that she was different in real life than online. I am different in real life to I guess. But she was going on my nerves. So I stopped meeting her. I was kind'a rude... but the girl was really intrusive. :?

I used to belong to a Doctor Who message board that had an annual meetup- I went for a few years but decided it wasn't for me. Online I'm the sort of person who doesn't say much but will make one well-thought-out or witty comment- in conversation, though, I can be dull and need drawing out. There's only one person I ever really connected with, and we spent about two and a half hours chatting away in a cafe after work, but that was an exception. Otherwise I'm probably a disappointment to most people who eventually meet me.

Malashlachi

I often avoid telling people this teeny detail of how I met my husband. ...because, well, I've always thought online dating sites, etc, were silly business. 😛 ...and I gotta admit, I still chuckle inside a little at the whole online dating thing.

That being said, I *did not* meet my husband on an online dating site. I DID, however, "speak" to him for the very first time via Twitter. We met "for business" (At the time, I was writing a webseries and was looking for someone to do the music for it, so we met to discuss the matter). ...and of course I told him ahead of time that I would be bringing my mace:

*snicker*

I didn't have a cell phone that day (I had dropped it in a glass of water the night before... unknowingly. ...and it had soaked in there overnight. -_-), so we planned ahead! The great plan was to meet at IHOP. ...because it was already late in the evening and I thought, "Hey! IHOP's open 24 hours and largely public, well-lit, etc; right?" ...Not in our case. -_- Apparently, unbeknownst to us, the IHOP we decided to meet at closed at 11pm (Weird, right?), which I guess it was already after, and I found myself pulling into a mostly abandoned, dark parking lot... The only car there was his. That gave me a bit of the wiggins, so I didn't get out of my car but instead told him to follow me to another restaurant. 😛

Long story short, he didn't kill me. ...though I'm sure there are some days he wishes he had. ;D We have since been known as "Malashlachi" (That's our celebrity couple name. 😛). XD

Oh! I forgot to add... My husband makes fun of me for marrying him (Like that makes sense. I know; right?) because I sometimes make fun of him for all of the "friends" he says he has that he's never met IRL. ...and the long list of people he HAS met IRL after "meeting" online. 😛

We also currently have a "friend" pending a planeride here to visit on the 6th of April. I feel more comfy with it this time because my big strong man'll protect me. ;P

And... Holy She-Posts-A-Lot, Batman!

...I too am in favor of a BB meetup! 😀 We go to an Atlanta Browncoats (Firefly/Serenity) meetup once a month. I wonder about planning something similar for BB folks in the area... if there are any. 😛

I personally would feel awkward meeting someone offline IRL. BUt that's just me. I don't like forced conversations and what have you. Although a BB meet up would be awesome mostly because there would be lots of us and I feel it would just be easier to talk to a few people than just one.

I'm a people person, so meeting people online has never been a problem with me. First time I met a person online, it was a 23 year old girl, who I met on Myspace (back when it was the cool new thing, right? 😛). Of course I lied and said I was 18 (I was really 15 😱), but we went out a couple of times and it was amazing. I even almost lost my virginity to her. The next time, I searched the web for fellow Whedon fans early last year, and I found the group Washington Whedonites. They meet up almost every month for dinner at some restaurant, so I said hey, why not? So here I am at this restaurant with our fellow brethren, and they were just so amazing and fun to be around. There was no drama, no tension, and they really made this new guy feel at ease. And I've been going to every single meetup since. 🙂

But of course it depends on the person. I completely understand someone who would be hesitant about meeting people online. It does have its risks. Be careful of what website you're on, especially. But just go with the flow, and if you feel like something's off about that person, or your spider sense is tingling, don't do it. Simple as that.

I've met a few people that I knew online first and have had no problems. I met my boyfriend online. I've been online gaming for a while and had many friends that I'd talk to daily (including my current boyfriend). We were friends for three years before we just kind of randomly decided to meet. (We use the day we met as our anniversary) We've been dating for a little over 2 years and it's worked out pretty damn good. I don't have anything against meeting people I know on the internet, as long as I either know them very well or will be meeting them in a large group or a very public area.
